(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 26) agni agni. [Skt. Lat. ignis.] n. Fire.జఠరాగ్ని the gastric juice, the digestive power. ఆగ్నేయమూల the south-east point. అగ్నిష్టోమము a sacrifice to the god of fire. అగ్నిపురము the pudendum muliebre. శోకాగ్ని mental anguish. చింతాగ్ని corroding care. అగ్నివైద్యము the use of a cautery. అగ్నిగుండము a fire-pit. అగ్నింధనము kindling or feeding the fire. అగ్నికణము a spark of fire. అగ్ని కార్యము kindling or feeding the sacrificial fire with oblations of liquid butter. అగ్నికాష్టము Agallochum అగరుగంధపు చెక్క అగ్నిక్రియ funeral riter or other religious acts performed by means of fire. అగ్నిజిహ్వ a tongue or flame of fire. అగ్నిజ్వాల a flame of fire. త్రేతాగ్నులు the three sacred fires called గార్హపత్యము, అహవనీయము and దాక్షిణము అగ్నినక్షత్రము the Pleiades. అగ్నిపరీక్ష ordeal by fire. అగ్నిపర్వతము a volcano. అగ్నిప్రవేశము entering the fire, self-immolation by means of fire. అగ్నిబాణము an arrow of fire, a rocket. అగ్నిమంధనము production of fire by friction. అగ్నిమయము fiery. అగ్ని మాంద్యము indigestion, dyspepsia. అగ్నిరాశి a heap of fire. అగ్నివర్ణము the colour of fire. అగ్ని సంస్కారము the consecration of fire, the performance of any rite by means of fire. అగ్నిసాక్షికముగా in the presence of fire as witness. అగ్న్యాస్త్రము fire thrown as a rocket. అగ్నియుత్పాతము a fiery portent, meteor. అగ్నిమండలము a large caterpillar that destroys crops and whose touch is supposed to occasion inflammation. అగ్ని మాత n. The plant called Ceylon lead-wort. Plumbago Ẕelanica. చిత్రమూలము. అగ్నివేండపాకు ammannia baccifera or blistering Ammannia (Watts) అగ్ని శిఖ. a flame of fire. Also a plant (Gloriosa superba) తరిగొర్రెచెట్టు, కుంకుమపువ్వు చెట్టు the Saf-flower plant. అగ్నిహోత్రము fire. అగ్నిహోత్రుడు the god of fire. అగ్నిహోత్రాలు కాల్చుచున్నాడు or చేయుచున్నాడు colloquial for 'he is smoking.'

(p. 38) aḍḍamu aḍḍamu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, A screen. అభ్యంతరము, ఆటంకము, చటు. A pledge తాకట్టు నీ మాటకు అడ్డము లేదు no one will resist you. వాండ్లకు మాకు గోడ అడ్డముగా ఉండినది there was a wall between them and us. ఒక నగను అడ్డము పెట్టి యిరువైరూపాయలు తెచ్చినాడు he pawned a jewel and got twenty rupees. నా పనికి అడ్డము వచ్చినాడు he opposed my endeavours. మొగుణ్ని అడ్డముపెట్టుకొని తానే అన్ని పనులు చూచుకొనిపోయినది she used her husband as a screen and carried on the business. వాడు తండ్రికి అడ్డమాడుతాడు he opposes or contradicts his father. తిరుపతికి పోయేలోగా మూడేళ్లు అడ్డమువస్తవి there are three rivers to cross on the way to Tirupati. ఏదో ఒకటి వచ్చి అడ్డముపడినది something has got in the way. వానికి అడ్డము తగిలినారు they interrupted him. కొంతదూరము దోవనే పోయి అవతల అడ్డము తిరిగినాడు or అడ్డము తొక్కినాడు he went along some way and then cut across. 'కరాగ్రములు దృష్టులకడ్డమిడుచు.' BD. iv. 1532. అడ్డముగా aḍḍamu-gā. [Tel.] adv. Crosswise, across, transversely. చెట్టు కండ్లకు అడ్డముగానున్నది the tree intercepts the view, నేను అడ్డముగా నిలిస్తిని I stood in his way.

(p. 47) adhyayanamu adhyayanamu. [Skt.] n. Study, reading, especially of the sacred books. గురుముఖాను పూర్వశ్రవణము, పఠనము, The word అధ్యయనము is commonly used for the study of the Vedas or for the Veda itself thus: ఆ చిన్నవాడు నాలుగేండ్ల నుంచి అధ్యయనము చేయుచున్నాడు the boy has been studying the Vedas for four years. నాకు అధ్యయనము రాదు I have not studied the Vedas.

(p. 48) adhyāpanamu adhyāpanamu. [Skt.] n. Instruction in sacred knowledge. అధ్యాపకుడు adhyāpakudu. [Skt.] n. A teacher, one who instructs in the sacred books. వేదములను నేర్పువాడు.

(p. 48) adhvaramu adhvaramu. [Skt.] A sacrifice. యజ్ఞము. 'అధ్వరవైకల్య మరయుచుంచు బ్రహ్మరాక్షసకోటి.' భాస్క: రామా: బాల: 99. అధ్వర్యుడు n. A Bramin versed in the Yajur Veda; యజుర్వేదవేత్త; the officiating priest at a sacrifice whose duty it is to measure the ground, build the altar, prepare the sacrificial vessels, fetch wood and water, light the fire, bring and immolate the animal. For a description of the sacrifice, vide భాస్కరామా. బాల 114. అధ్వర్యవేదము = యజుర్వేదము.

(p. 68) abrahmaṇyamu a-brahmaṇyamu. [Tel.] n A deed improper to be done by a Brahmin: an unbrahminical or sacrilegious act; an exclamation meaning to the rescue! a heinous sin is about to be committed!' Crying for quarter. మొర, అవధ్యోక్తి, చంపవద్దనేమాట. 'ఈ వృక్షవాటంబులో భామా యేదపమాచరింతువిధిక బ్రహ్మణ్యముంబెట్టుచున్.' Swa. iii. 137. 'బలభిన్ముఖ్యులు పాహిపాహియని యబ్రహ్మణ్యమం బెట్టగన్.' N. ii. 490.

(p. 68) abhighariñcu abhi-gharinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To put a few drops of clarified butter upon rice before eating or before the rise is put into the sacrificial fire to purify the food. నేతి చుక్క వేయడము, భోజనమునకు ముందుగాగాని ఆహుతిచేయడమునకు ముందుగాగాని అన్నములో నేతి చుక్క వేయడము.

(p. 69) abhighāramu abhi-ghāramu. [Skt.] n. Ghee or clarified butter. నేతిబొట్టు, usually putting a few drops of clarified butter upon rice prior to eating: or putting it in the sacrficial fire to purify the rice.

(p. 75) amṛtamu a-mritamu. [Skt.] n. Nectar, ambrosia. Water, milk, clarified butter, the residue of a sacrifice. Final emancipation from matter and absorption in the Deity. సుధ, ఉదకము, దుగ్ధము, ఘృతము, యజ్ఞశేష ద్రవ్యము, మోక్షము, (వాడుకగా) మజ్జిగ. పంచామృతములు the five nectars, namely, water, milk, curds, ghee and honey. అమృతమునకు అంటులేదు nothing can defile buttermilk. వానిది అమృతహస్తము. he has a healing hand. వానిది అమృతవాక్కు his tongue is inspired. అమృతముహూర్తము n. An auspicious hour. శుభముహూర్తము. అమృతాంధసుడు n. One whose food is ambrosia, a god. దేవత. అమృతాంశువు n. That which gives forth soft beams of light, i.e., the Moon. చంద్రుడు.

(p. 75) amma amma. [Tel. cf. Aryan root 'Ma.'] n. Mother. తల్లి. Madam. అమ్మక్కచెల్ల, అమ్మచెల్ల alas! ah! oho! అమ్మణ్ని, అమ్మద్యు or అమ్మా or అమ్మల్ల interj. My dear, my love. అమ్మవారు amma-vāru. goddess. The small pox. బ్రాహ్మణస్త్రీ, పోలేరు, మశూచికము. ఆ సత్రములో వుండే అమ్మవారిని పిలువు call the Brahmin woman who is in the lodge. అమ్మవారికి పొంగలి పెట్టినారు they offered a sacrifice to the village goddess. వానికి అమ్మవారు పోసినది he has got the small pox. అమ్మవారి చుక్కలు, అమ్మ చుక్కలు pock marks. అమ్మవారి చుక్కలగల or అమ్మచుక్కలుగల pitted with the small pox. అమ్మవారు పోయించు to inoculate. అమ్మవారిధూము an outbreak of cholera. అమ్మాయి ammāyi. [Tel.] n. A little girl. పడుచు అమ్మి or అమ్మాళు n. Missy, my dear, my love.

(p. 78) araṇi araṇi. [Skt.] n. A piece of dry wood to produce fire by friction at sacrifices. మంధనముచేత అగ్నిని పుట్టించే కాష్ఠము.

(p. 83) arkamu or అర్కవృక్షము same as జిల్లేడు చెట్టు. (q. v.) అర్కక్షీరము the acrid milk of this plant.

(p. 94) avabhṛthamu ava-bhrithamu. [Skt.] n. Ablution after a sacrifice, a purification made at the termination of a sacrifice or any auspicious ceremony. యజ్ఞాంత స్నానము.

(p. 99) aśvamu aṣvamu. [Skt.] n. A horse. గుర్రము. అశ్వగతి the pace of a horse. అశ్వదూత a messenger who rides on horseback. అశ్వపాది horsefooted. అశ్వమేథము the sacrifice of a horse, performed anciently by Hindu rajahs. అశ్వరథము a carriage drawn by horses. గుర్రపు బండి, గుర్రాలబండి. అశ్వవైద్యుడు a veterinary surgeon. అశ్వశాల a stable. అశ్వశాస్త్రము veterinary science. అశ్వశిక్ష the training of horses. అశ్వశిక్షకుడు a rough-rider, a horse-breaker. అశ్వారూఢుడు or అశ్వారోహుడు one who is mounted on horseback. రవుతు.
