(p. 3) aṅkiñcu ankinṭsu. [Tel.] v. t. & i. 1. To raise, take up, lift up. భుజములంకించు shrug the shoulders. 2. To move about, to brandish, ఆడించు, ౛ళిపించు. 'కరవాలంబంకించి యంగదుభజాంతరంబు బిట్టు వ్రేసి.' ద్వి.రా. 3. To turn to one side త్రిప్పు. 'నమ్మెగమంకించి.' విర్వ. ఊ: viii. 4. To hold, పట్టుకొను. 'మారుతసుతుండు ఘనగదాదండ మంకించి కదలుటయును.' జై. భా. ii. 47. 5. To adopt, take or receive. అవలంబించు. 'ధర్మమేజయమనుమాట తగుగదాయని కొంతధైర్యమంకించి.' సారం. 278. 6. To look bright ఉల్లసిల్లు. 'పంకజభవాండమండపంబు సంకుచేసిన పొంకంబున నంకించుచు.' వసు. iv. 23. 7. To extol, applaud పొగడు: 'సముచితభాషణంబుల నంకించుచున్న.' భాగ. viii. 134.

(p. 3) aṅkuramu ankuramu. [Skt.] n. A germ, a sprout, a bud. మొలక. నఖాంకురములు nail-marks, ప్రేమాంకురము the germ of love. నంశాంకురము నిలిచేలాగు దత్తుచేసికొనెను he adopted a son to preserve the stem of his family. ఆయనకు అంకురములేనందున as he left no heir.

(p. 95) avalambiñcu avalambinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To take hold of any thing; depend on any person or thing. చేపట్టు, ఆశ్రయించు, ఆ మతమును అవలంబించినవారు Converts, those who embraced that creed. ధైర్యము నవలంబంచి picking up courage. ఆయనమాట నవలంబించినారు they embraced his opinion, or sided with him. అవలంబము or అవలంబనము avalambamu n. Taking hold of anything, hanging on or from. Adoption, or profession of certain views. గతి, ఆశ్రయము, మతావలంబనము the adoption of a religion. అవలంబితము adj. That which is adopted, as one's own.

(p. 128) āśrayamu āṣrayamu. [Skt.] n. Support, asylum. refuge, retreat, place of safety, protection, patronage, countenance. అండ, బలవంతు నాశ్రయించుట ఇల్లు. ఆశ్రయాసుడు āṣray-āṣuḍu. n. The god of fire, because he eats or destroys one's abode. ఆశ్రయించు āṣray-inṭsu. n. To take refuge, to depend upon or have recourse to, to court, to follow. అనుసరించు, అండగొను. ఈ ప్రతిభేదమును ఆశ్రయించినాడు he adopted this reading. ఆశ్రితము āṣritamu. adj. Dependent on. ఆశ్రితుడు āṣrituḍu. n. One who is looked up to for help. ఆశ్రయింపబడినవాడు.

(p. 242) kanna kanna. [Tel.] adj. (Contracted from కనిన who begot). 'By birth' (a parent) as distinguished from పెంపుడు 'by adoption.' కన్నతండ్రి one's own father or natural father; కన్నతల్లి one's own mother; కన్నబిడ్డ a child by birth, not by adoption. కన్న (i.e., కనిన seen, perceived.) adj. Any, miscellaneous, indiscriminately taken, vile. కన్నకూళ్లు any food that one could get. కన్నమాటలు vile language. కన్నవాడు anybody, without selection. కన్నవారు strangers, anybody. కన్నచోట anywhere. In Paraj. v. 46. కన్నదిగతిగా in any way or direction, headlong. కాకి కన్నది తింటుంది the crow eats trash.

(p. 242) kannayya kannayya. [Tel.] n. A father by blood (as distinguished from an adopted father). Another meaning is in use. When parents fear an infant may die, they sometimes bore a crevice through the wall and put the babe through it: then they name their son కన్నయ్య 'him of the cleft' as received directly from the deity.

(p. 430) ceyi, cēyi or చెయ్యి cheyi. [Tel.] n. A hand The arm. A sleeve. An elephant's trunk. Five (in counting, as three hands, i.e., fifteen.) అరచెయ్యి or లోచెయ్యి the palm of the hand. మీదిచెయ్యి or మీజెయి the back of the hand. ముంజెయ్యి the wrist. మోచెయ్యి the elbow. దండచెయ్యి the upper arm. చెయిదము, చెయిది or చెయ్దు cheyidamu. [Tel. from చేయు.] n. An act, action, doing. కృత్యము, చేష్ట. 'చేతకానిచెయిదములు చేయక.' M. XII. ii. 415. చెయిపట్టు cheyi-paṭṭu. v. n. To adopt, protect, take by the hand. To seize or ravish a woman. To marry. To foster. చెయ్యిన్రాలలలు or చేవ్రాలు cheyi-vrālu. n. Handwriting, a signature. వారందరు ఒక చెయ్యిగానున్నారు they are all hand in hand, hand and glove with each other. ఆ పని చెయ్యికూడివచ్చినది the business turned out well. చేతికిందిమనిషి a servant, a slave. చేతిపని hand-work. చేతిసొమ్ము money in hand, cash. అతని చేతివాడు one of his creatures or hangers on. చెయ్యివెల sale for ready money. రొక్కపు వెల. చెయ్యి సాగినంతలో when your hand is in, when you have the opportunity. In some phrases the word may be left untranslated: as నా చేతికిచ్చెను he gave it to me; lit. to my hand చెయికావలి means a supply of rice, &c., provided for dinner at a future stage in a journey. చెయ్యికావలికి నాలుగు రూపాయలు ఎత్తిపెట్టుకొన్నాడు he laid up something to meet contingencies. కరిడిచెయ్యి అద్దము like a looking glass in the hand of a bear. చేతకాని idle, paltry, incapable. In some compounds it means extra, as చెయ్యికావలి or చెయ్యిజాగ్రత a reserve, or extra ground; చెయ్యితడి ఆరకముందు తీర్చివెయ్యి do it before your hand cools. చెయ్యియీటె a small spear. తాళపుచెయ్యి a key. నీచేతినుంచి తగులుతుంది, or, చెయ్యికరుచును you will have to lay out some money. చెయ్యిచేసికొను to handle, interfere, meddle with, to use the hand: to take the law into one's own hands and beat. చెయ్యివిడుచు to abandon, desert, give over (a person.) చెయ్యిచూచు to feel the pulse. చెయ్యితిరిగిన cheyyi-tirigina. adj. Experienced, expert, handy. చెయువు or చెయ్వు cheyuvu. n. An act, an action.

(p. 435) cēpaṭṭu chē-paṭṭu. [Tel. చే = చేయి.] v. a. To take by the hand. గ్రహించు. To adopt, to patronise అవలంబించు. To help. To marry. పెండ్లియాడు. n. Adoption అవలంబనము. Kindness అనుగ్రహము. R. v. 191. తుత్తురముగా దొట్టి = తుత్తురుముచేసి. తొట్టు totṭu. n. A field within the bed of a tank. చెరువు కట్టలోపలి పొలము. A side, direction, quarter. పార్శ్వము, వైపు, దిక్కు. 'పార్థివచనుమేతొట్టున బొరలకుమనవుడు.' G. V. 257. Profit, gain. ఫలము, లాభము. Connection, relationship సంబంధము, స్పృక్కు. A sudden sound తటాలనుధ్వని. Also, same as తెట్టువ. (q. v.) తొట్టున toṭṭuna. adv. Quickly, at once. దబ్బున. తొట్టువ Same as తెట్టువ.

(p. 579) datamu dattamu. [Skt. cf. Lat. datus.] adj. Given, presented. ఇయ్యబడిన. Adopted, reared. స్వయందత్తుడు a son self-given, one who being without natural parents or being deserted by them, offers himself for adoption. దత్తత, దత్తత్వము, దత్తు or దత్తువు dattata. n. Adoption. స్వీకారము. దత్తకుడు dattakuḍu. n. An adopted son. దత్తపుత్రుడు. దత్తి datti. n. A gift. ఈవ, దానము. 'దత్తినెతక్క.' A. ii. 38. దత్తుడు a man who is given as a hostage,. కుదువ ఉంచబడినవాడు. దత్తుతీసుకొను to adopt a son.

(p. 692) pakṣamu pakshamu. [Skt.] n. A side, flank. పక్క. A wing, as being the side of a bird. రెక్క. The feather of an arrow. A side or party. Bias of mind, partiality. A fortnight, as one half of the month. An argument, position or assertion. A hypothesis. పూర్వపక్షము a refutation. A class, or tribe. A group or multitude, సమూహము. కేశపక్షము a lock of hair. అతని పక్షమున on his behalf, behoof or favour. ఆ పక్షమందు in that case, on that supposition, supposing so, provided it be so. ఇట్లుచెప్పే పక్షమందు if he says so, upon his saying this. మొదటిపక్షమందు on the first supposition. పక్షకము pakshakamu. n. A back door. దిడ్డివాకిలి. పక్షతి pakshati. n. The first lunar day of either the dark or bright fortnight, పాడ్యమి. The root of a wing, రెక్క మొదలు, పక్షద్వారము pakshadvāramu. n. A back door, a side door. దిడ్డివాకిలి. పక్షపాతము paksha-pātamu. n. Leaning to one side, i.e., partiality. ఒక పక్క కొరుగుట. అక్షరపక్షపాతము love of learning. పక్షపాతి paksha-pāti. n. One who is partial. పక్షాంతరము pakshāntaramu. n. An alternative. ఈ పక్షము కూడనందున పక్షాంతరము చెప్పెదను this view of the question or hypothesis not answering, I shall explain the alternative or the other side. వాడు పక్షాంతరమును అవలంబించినారు they adopted another view. పక్షి pakshi. n. A bird. A poor wretch. A miserable destitute object. పక్షులు poor wretches. నేను పక్షివంటివాడను or నేనొక పక్షిని I am as helpless or desolate as a homeless bird. పక్షిణి pakshiṇi. n. A period of thirty six hours, a night and two days. రెండుపగళ్లు నొకరాత్రియు, లేక, రెండురాత్రులు నొకపగలునుగలకాలము. పక్షీకరించు pakshi-karinṭsu. v. a. To be partial to, to countenance. పక్షముంచు. పక్ష్మము pakshmamu. n. An eyelash. రెప్పవెండ్రుక. పక్ష్మలము pakshmalamu. adj. having eyelashes, రెప్పవెండ్రుకలుకల. పక్ష్మలించు pakshmalinṭsu. v. n. (p. 698) paṭṭu paṭṭu. [Tel.] v. n. To suffice, to last. చెల్లు. To last a long time, హుకాలము చెల్లు. To begin, ప్రారంభించు. To happen, కలుగు. కలుగు. To cost. To fit or suit. To be possessed by evil spirits. To arrive, as ships. To be imbibed or absorbed, as a dye. To be held or contained. To be affected by disease or pain. v. a. Lit: To take the hand; to take to wife, to marry. చెయ్యిపట్టు to seize the hand, to ravish a female. దారమునుపట్టు, to twist a cord, నేను. గొడుగుపట్టు to hold an umbrella. కాలుపట్టు to geld. కాళ్లుపట్టు to massage or rub the legs. పగపట్టు to conceive hatred. శంఖముపట్టు to blow a conch. కత్తి సానపట్టు to set or grind a knife or razor. కంపుపట్టు to stink. చుట్టపట్టు to smoke a cigar or cheroot. పొగపట్టు to apply smoke. ఆ బొక్కలో నా చెయ్యి పట్టదు my hand will not go into the hole. తలా ఒకదారి పట్టినారు each of them went by a separate road. ఇంకా కోతపట్టలేదు the reaping has not yet been put in hand. ఆ వ్యాజ్యమును పట్టలేదు they did not admit the lawsuit. దానిగోళ్లకు గోరింటపట్టదు the colouring does not adhere to her nails. ఆ మందు ఈ రోగాన్ని పట్టలేదు the medicine has not affected this sickness. ఆ విద్యను బాగా పట్టి ఉన్నాడు he has taken well to that branch of study. గింజపట్టే సమయము the time when the grain is forming in the ear. ఇమదులో ఎవరికేమి పట్టినది who has any thing to do with this? నాలుగుదినములు పట్టును it will take four days. మనిషిపట్టేమాత్రము only large enough to admit a man. అయిదురూపాయీలు పట్టును it will cost five rupees. ముడు గజాలు పట్టును it will take three yards. మన్నెముపట్టి ఉన్నారు they betook themselves to the highlands. ఆనవాలుపట్టు or గురుతుపట్టు ānavālu-paṭṭu v. a. To identify, recognise, know again, verify. పట్టి పట్టి మాట్లాటెను he spoke in a broken manner. ఎవరినిపట్టితే వారు చెప్పుదురు ask whom you will, and they will tell you. మీరు పట్టిమాట్లాడితే ఆ పని అనుకూలమవును if you speak to the point the matter will be settled. అది నా బుద్ధికి పట్టలేదు I do not take (or comprehend) the meaning. పట్టిచెప్పితే ఆ పిల్లవానికి చదువు బాగావచ్చును if you teach him sedulously the boy will learn well. వాడు దానిని పట్టుకొని పీకులాడుచున్నాడు he is troubling himself about it. వాడు పట్టినదెల్లా బంగారమవుచు వచ్చినది whatever he touched turned to gold. ఆ కోటను పట్టుకొన్నారు they took the fort. ఆ దొంగను పట్టుకొన్నారు they apprehended the thief. నా చెయ్యి పట్టుకొన్నాడు he laid hold of my hand, or, he seized my hand. ఆ వాడుకను పట్టుకొన్నాడు he began the practice. ఒక నెల జీతము పట్టుకొన్నాడు he stopped one month's wages. చెప్పగానే పట్టుకొన్నాడు he understood me the moment I spoke. నడుము పట్టుకొన్నది my loins are strained. [పట్టు is also added to a great number of nouns, to give them a verbal signification and in such cases it takes its meaning from the noun to which it is affixed; thus:] తప్పుపట్టు to rust. ఇలుకుపట్టు to be sprained. అక్కరపట్టు to be necessary, to be required or to take interest in. కొవ్వుపట్టు to become fat. బూజుపట్టు to grow mouldy, దోవపట్టు to take a road. సత్తువపట్టు to be recovered, as strength. పట్లుపట్టు to be seized with cramp, &c. వాడు లంచము పట్టుచున్నాడు he takes bribes. వాడికి వెర్రిపట్టినది he has gone mad. నాకు చలిపట్టుచున్నది I feel cold. వాని గుణములు నీకు పట్టుపడినవి you have contracted his habits. వానపట్టినప్పుడు when rain came on. అట్లు చేయడానకు నీకేమిపట్టినది what business had you to do this? what made you do this? గడ్డిపట్టినబీళ్లు land covered with grass. వానిమీద తప్పుపట్టినారు they found fault with him. ఆ మందు నోరుపట్టినది the medicine made his mouth swell. వానికి ౛లుబు పట్టినది he has caught cold. నాకు కూరుకు పట్టినది I became drowsy. ఆ దూడ యింకా గడ్డి పట్ట లేదు the calf has not yet taken to grass. పట్టించు paṭṭinṭsu. [causal of పట్టు.] v. a. To cause to hold. To apply oil or ointment, &c. To make one begin. ఆ చిన్నవాడికి అమరము పట్టించినారు they have made him begin (reading) the Amaram. రేపు నీపని పట్టిస్తాను or నీతాళముపట్టిస్తాను I will settle your business to-morrow, i.e., I will punish you. ఆ పెట్టెను వానిచేతి పట్టించుకొనిరా make him bring the box with you. పట్టింపు paṭṭimpu. n. Application. Concern. పిల్లకాయలచేత ఒక పుస్తకము ఆరంభించడము, శ్రద్ధ, అక్కర, పాటింపు. అమరము పట్టింపు అయిన మూడు నెలలకు three months after setting to work on the Amaram. ఆరాధ్యులకు కర్మమందు పట్టింపులేదు the Aradhyas pay no attention to rites. 'లేనిపట్టింపులెల్లను పూనిచాన.' Ila. iii. 29. పట్టు paṭṭu. n. Holding, a hold. గ్రహణము, పట్టుకొనుట. A handful. Pertinacity, resolution, hold, strength, grip, grasp, seizing. గ్రహణము. An external application to a swelling to allay pain, &c. పూత. Ground, for a proceeding, కారణము. A prop; support, favor; a party or side, ఆధారము. A part of scene in a play, స్థానము, విషయము. విరహపుపట్టు an amorous scene,. యుద్ధపుపుట్టు a warlike scene. A feat in wrestling. అది తలకు పట్టు పెట్టుకొని పండుకొన్నది she put a plaster on her temples and went to bed. ఈ వ్యాజ్యములో పట్టులేదు there is no proper plea in this suit. ఒకని పట్టుగా మాట్లాడుట to speak on a man's behalf. ఒక పట్టుగానుండు to inhit pertinaciously. ఉనికిపట్టు a place, a house, an abode. వాడు పట్టినపట్టు వదలడు he will not relinquish his purpose. వాణ్ని పట్టిన పట్టున తీసుకొనివచ్చిరి they brought him as he was. పట్టుస్నానము bathing at the commencement of an eclipse, as opposed to విడుపుస్నానము bathing at its termination. ఆయన పట్టుబిడుపు తెలిసినవాడు he knows where to be lenient and where to be severe. కూతపట్టునేల as far as a cry may be heard. వారికి కర్మములో పట్టులేదు they do not lay much stress upon ceremonies. వాడు ఎంతమాత్రము పట్టు ఇవ్వకుండా మాట్లాడుచున్నాడు he speaks without giving them any handle. చాలా మంది ఆయనపట్టు అయిరి many followed him, or joined his side. పట్టున (with న the sign of the ablative) at, by, close to. కోరడి పట్టు న along the hedge. గాడీపట్టున at the manager. ఈ పట్టున at present, పట్టు feats in wrestling. కాడు జెట్టిపట్లుపట్టగలడు he is able to wrestle. ఆ చుట్టుపట్ల in the adjacent places, in the neighbourhood. చుట్టుపట్ల వాండ్లు neighbours. పట్టు paṭṭu. n. Silk. పట్టుబట్ట a silk cloth. పట్టునూలు silk thread, spun silk. పట్టునూలుపాలెవాండ్లు a class of silk weavers. పట్టునూలువాండ్లు a class of silk dyers. పట్టుపురుగు paṭṭu-purugu. n. A silkworm. Also, an insect called ఇంద్రగోపము. పట్టంచు paṭṭ-anṭsu. (పట్టు+అంచు.) n. A silk border, a border fringed or trimmed with silk. పట్టుకొమ్మ paṭṭu-komma. n. A refuge, stay, support. అధికారము, ఊతకోల. పట్టుకారు Same as పటకారు (q. v.) పట్టుకొను paṭṭu-konu. v. n. &t. To catch, to catch hold of, to seize. పట్టుకోలు paṭṭu-kōlu. n. Catching. పట్టుకొనుట. పట్టుజిట్ట paṭṭu-jiṭṭa. n. A sort of bird. S. i. 187. పట్టెడు paṭṭ-eḍu. adj. A large handful. Lit. 'as much as the hand will hold.' పట్టుజీనువు paṭṭu-jīnuvu. n. A kind of bird, పిగిలిపిట్ట. పట్టుడు paṭṭuḍu. n. Persistence, పట్టుదల. adj. Choice, select. పట్టుడువేట a first rate sheep. పట్టుడావు a picked cow or fine cow. పట్టుదల paṭṭu-dala. n. Affection, favour, Perseverance, persistence. వదలనిపట్టు, అభినివేశము. వానికి దానిమీద నిండా పట్టుదల he has a great regard for it. పట్టుబడి paṭṭu-baḍi. n. A sum received or credited in an account, the worth or coat of any thing, charges, expense, outlay. పట్టుబడు paṭṭu-baḍu. v. n. To be seized or apprehended. చిక్కుకొను. To become plain, విదితమగు. పట్టుసారువ paṭṭu-sāruva. n. A fork-like beam used to hold by while working a pikota or water-lift మీట త్రొక్కువాడు ఆధారముగా పట్టుకొనే పంగలకొయ్య. పట్లు. plu. of పట్ల paṭla. [from పట్టుల.] adv. About, as ఆ చుట్టుపట్ల in that neighbourhood, round-about. With regard to, with reference to, in the event of. వాడు అక్కడ ఉండినపట్ల in case of his being there. ఇంటిపట్ల at home. అతనిపట్ల అన్యాయముచేయకు do him no wrong. ఈపట్ల in this respect, in this matter.

(p. 767) putruḍu or పుత్రకుడు putruḍu. [Skt.] n. A son. ఔరసపుత్రుడు or ఔరసుడు aurasa-putruḍu. n. A legitimate son. దత్తపుత్రుడు or దత్తుడు patta-putruḍu. n. An adopted son. పుత్రి or పుత్రిక putri. n. A duaghter. A copy or transcript from an original. పుత్రవాత్సల్యము parental affection, love towards children. పుత్రోత్సవము putr-ōṭsavamu. n. Rejoicings on account of the birth of a son. పుత్రకామేష్టి putra-kām-ēshṭi. n. A religious sacrifice performed for the purpose of obtaining a son. పుత్రజీవిక putra-jīvika. n. A tree, a species of Nageia Rox. iii. 786. పుత్రపాత్రపారంపర్యముగా putra-pautra-pāram-paryamu-gā. adv. From generation to generation. ఈ నేలను పుత్రపాత్రపారంపర్యముగా అనుభవింపవలసినది the land is to be held by him and his heirs for ever.

(p. 784) peñcu or పెనుచు penṭsu. [Tel. from పెను.] v. a. To nourish, support, take care of. To adopt or rear a child, పోషించు, సాకు. To increase, improve. To extend or swell. To exaggerate, to multiply. మాంసము మాంసమును పెంచును flesh meat increases the flesh. కలహము పెంచినాడు he fomented the quarrel. గ్రంథము ఊరక పెంచెను he spun the story (or book) out. గడ్డము పెంచు to grow or wear a beard తలపెంచు to wear one's hair long, to keep one's head unshorn. చెవులుపెంచు or చెవులు కుట్టించు to bore the ears. Chenn. iii.145. ముక్కుపెంచు to keep a hole open for a nose-jewel. దుఃఖముపెంచు to indulge in grief, దుఃఖముపొందు, దుఃఖించు.
