(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 12) antasthalu antasthalu. [Skt.] n. A name given in grammar to the four consonants y,r,l,v,య, ర, ల, వ, which are considered by the Sanskrit Grammarians to be semi-vowels, and 'to be intermediate between vowels and consonants, or because they stand between the consonants and the sibilants in the alphabet.' Wms. అంతస్థమద్గరము in anat. the malleus of the ear.

(p. 20) akkaramu for అక్షరము akkaramu. [Skt.] n. A letter of the alphabet. వర్ణము.

(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 72) abhyasiñcu abhyasinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To excercise, practise, learn, study. అలవాటుచేయు, వాడుకచేయు, నేర్చుకొను. అభ్యసింపజేయు to cause to practise or learn అభ్యసితము abhyasitamu. [Skt.] adj. Practised, exercised, skilled. Learned, expert. అలవాటుపడిన, చెయ్యితిరిగిన, పనుపడిన, నేర్చుకోబడిన. అభ్యసనీయము abhyasanīyamu. n. That can be practised or learned. అభ్యాసము abhyāsamu. n. Practice, exercise, study, use. వాడుక, అలవాటు, అక్షరాభ్యాసము learning the alphabet. అభ్యాసం కూసు విద్య practice makes perfect.

Genteel, urbane, civil, polite, polished, elegant, refined, civilised. నాగరికుడు nāgarikuḍu. n. A gentleman, a man of elegance a civilised person.

(p. 829) pratilōmamu prati-lōmamu. [Skt.] adj. Not right, reverse, inverted, contrary to the natural course or order, against the hair or grains. ప్రతి లోపముగా backwards, as reciting (a spell or the alphabet) the wrong way. ప్రతిలోమవివాహము marriage the wrong way, i.e., wherein the wife is superior to the husband.

(p. 946) matamu matamu. [Skt.] n. Opinion. అభిప్రాయము. Wish, idea. A doctrine, creed, sect, religion, శాస్త్రము. Consent, సమ్మతి. త్రిమతములు the three creeds, i.e., the Vaishnava, Madhwa and Smarta creeds. షణ్మతములు the six creeds, viz. వైష్నవము, శైవము, శాక్తము, గాణపతము, సౌరము and కాపాలికము కాదిమతము (in magic) is the mode wherein the alphabet is recited the right way while హోదిమతము is reciting the alphabet backwards, the wrong way, beginning with హ which is the last consonant.
