(p. 270) kāni or గాని kāni. [Tel.] (conj. denoting an alternative.) But, either, or, except, unless. And not, nor, Rather, Before. జాజియొక్కటియెకాని సకలకుసమ విసరసంపదచేనొప్పె వసుధయెల్ల , విరహణియెకానిధరణిపై వివిధజనులు సంతసములొందజేసె వసంతవేళ.' Sunandā Parinyam, iv. 22. 'ఆలలు మగనిమాట కడ్డంబు వచ్చెనా ఆలలుకాదది వానివ్రాలుకాని.' (Vēma.) ఇంతేకాని నేనేమెరుగను I know nothing but this. ఇదియేమోకాని I cannot tell what this may be. అదిగాని యిదిగాని either that or this. ఆపని పది దినములకుగాని కాదు that work cannot be finished in less than ten days. రేపుగాని రాడు he will not come here before to-morrow. ఉద్యోగము చిక్కుననే అపేక్ష ఉంటేగాని నేను అక్కడ ఉండను I would not have remained there had I not hoped to gain employment. ఇది అతని చేతగాని మరి యొకనిచేతకాదు he alone can do it, no one else can. ఎల్లవిధముల నిను వధియించిగాని పురికి నురుగముగావున for we will not return without slaying thee. అతడు వస్తేనేగాని యీపని కానేరదు unless he comes we cannot effect this. కాని or కానీ (for కానిమ్ము) imp. verb denoting assent. Let it be done. Be it so. Never mind. Very well. ఆ పని ముందరకానీ let that be done first. కానీ కానీ నీ కావరమణతు very well, I will crush your pride.

(p. 279) kāvali kāvali. [Tel.] n. Guard, custody. రక్షణము. చేకావలి an alternative, a thing kept as a stand by; a provision. చెయ్యికావలిగా నుండేస్తంభము a piece of wood kept in reserve. కావలికాడు or కావలివాడు kāvali-kāḍu. n. A sentinel, a watchman. రక్షకుడు. కావలిబొట్టు a black mark put on the face of children for good luck బిడ్డలకు రక్ష గానుంచే నల్లని బొట్టు.

(p. 355) gati gati. [Skt.] n. Way. త్రోవ. Going, gait, pace, march, passage. గమనము. Means, resource, fund, contrivance, expedient, remedy. ఉపాయము. Refuge, resort, help, aid. దిక్కు. Fate, lot, destiny, state, hap, condition, situation. విధి. An adventure. (In the Līla, the different cantos are called గతులు.) Salvation, rescue రక్షణము. Ability, power శక్తి. నాగతి యేమి what is to become of me? ఇందుకు వేరేగతి ఉన్నది for this there is another remedy. దైవగతి divine providence. గతిలేని helpless, destitute, abject. వానికి దానిని చెల్లించుటకు గతిలేదు he is unable to pay it, he is without means of payment. పుత్రుడులేనివారికి గతిలేదు the childless have no hope (or prospect) of heaven. పటుగతి strongly దిట్టముగా. గతించు gatinṭsu. v. n. To pass away, elapse, కడచు. To die. చచ్చు. గతికల్పించు to devise an expedient. గతికుడు gatikuḍu. n. He who has a resource. అనన్యగతికుడై having no other resource. గతుడు gatuḍu. n. One who is gone or entered. ఆనందాబ్ధిగతుండనై I plunged in a sea of bliss. గత్యంతరము gat-y-antaramu. n. An alternative: an other means, or resource.

(p. 692) pakṣamu pakshamu. [Skt.] n. A side, flank. పక్క. A wing, as being the side of a bird. రెక్క. The feather of an arrow. A side or party. Bias of mind, partiality. A fortnight, as one half of the month. An argument, position or assertion. A hypothesis. పూర్వపక్షము a refutation. A class, or tribe. A group or multitude, సమూహము. కేశపక్షము a lock of hair. అతని పక్షమున on his behalf, behoof or favour. ఆ పక్షమందు in that case, on that supposition, supposing so, provided it be so. ఇట్లుచెప్పే పక్షమందు if he says so, upon his saying this. మొదటిపక్షమందు on the first supposition. పక్షకము pakshakamu. n. A back door. దిడ్డివాకిలి. పక్షతి pakshati. n. The first lunar day of either the dark or bright fortnight, పాడ్యమి. The root of a wing, రెక్క మొదలు, పక్షద్వారము pakshadvāramu. n. A back door, a side door. దిడ్డివాకిలి. పక్షపాతము paksha-pātamu. n. Leaning to one side, i.e., partiality. ఒక పక్క కొరుగుట. అక్షరపక్షపాతము love of learning. పక్షపాతి paksha-pāti. n. One who is partial. పక్షాంతరము pakshāntaramu. n. An alternative. ఈ పక్షము కూడనందున పక్షాంతరము చెప్పెదను this view of the question or hypothesis not answering, I shall explain the alternative or the other side. వాడు పక్షాంతరమును అవలంబించినారు they adopted another view. పక్షి pakshi. n. A bird. A poor wretch. A miserable destitute object. పక్షులు poor wretches. నేను పక్షివంటివాడను or నేనొక పక్షిని I am as helpless or desolate as a homeless bird. పక్షిణి pakshiṇi. n. A period of thirty six hours, a night and two days. రెండుపగళ్లు నొకరాత్రియు, లేక, రెండురాత్రులు నొకపగలునుగలకాలము. పక్షీకరించు pakshi-karinṭsu. v. a. To be partial to, to countenance. పక్షముంచు. పక్ష్మము pakshmamu. n. An eyelash. రెప్పవెండ్రుక. పక్ష్మలము pakshmalamu. adj. having eyelashes, రెప్పవెండ్రుకలుకల. పక్ష్మలించు pakshmalinṭsu. v. n. To wink, రెప్పజేయు.

(p. 733) pākṣikamu pākshikamu. [Skt. from పక్షము.] n. An alternative. పక్షమున కలిగినది. Unfairness, partiality, పక్షపాతము.

(p. 970) māṭa māṭa. [Tel.] n. A word, పదము. A promise, వాగ్దత్తము, ప్రతిజ్ఞావచనము. Slander, నింద. Opinion, rumour, వృత్తాంతము. అతడు నీ మాట చెప్పలేదు he did not speak of you. ఇది వేరే మాట this is another affair, another thing. వానిమాటకాదు this is not about him, I am not talking about him. గడియకు ఒకమాట చెప్పినాడు he changed his mind every hour. మంచిమాట (interj.) Very well. దాన్ని గురించి రెండో మాటలేదు there is no alternative. వారివిద్ద మాటలుపడినాడు he was reproached or reprimanded by them. In some phrases the word మాట need not be translated. Thus, ఆమె తిరిగీ వస్తున్నదనేమాట తెలిసి knowing that she would return. నేను దానిని కొన్నమాట రూఢి it is very true I bought it. ఆమాటే యెరుగను I know nothing of it. ఇందుచేత మాటవచ్చును by this you will get into disgrace. అతడు మాటతప్పలేదు he did not fail in his promise. మాట తప్పినవాడు మాలవాడు a promise breaker is a pariah, i.e., is a mean wretch. నేను పోయినమాట వానికి ఎట్లా తెలిసినది how did he know that I was gone? అతడు పోయేమాట ఉండేమాటా does he propose to go or stay? వాడు ఉండేమాట యింకా తెలియలేదు I do not as yet know that he will remain. మాటకుమాట word for word, literally. నా మాట అడుగుదాటకు transgress not my command. తనమీద మాటరాకుండా ఇట్లా చేసెను he did this to avoid blame. మాటవినుట to obey. ఎంతమాట what nonsense! వానిమాట వాని ఒడిలో వేసినాను I acted as he desired. నీకు మాట నాకు మూట a command is easy to give but hard to perform, or a word from you will make me rich. వెయ్యిమాటలేల why discuss it at length, in a word. ఆ పెండ్లి మాట యీ గ్రంథములో లేదు there is no mention of the marriage in this book నామాటవేరు, నీమాట వేరు I say one thing you say another, my opinion is different from yours, my case is quite different from yours. వానికి నాకు మాటలు లేవు he and I are not on speaking terms. వానితో నీకేమిమాటలు why do you speak with him? ఈమాట వింటే ఆయన యేమనును if he hears of this what will he say? కడపటిమాటయేమి what was the upshot of the business? ఇప్పట్లో వాని మాట సాగదు he has now no influence. కడకు వానిమాటే ముందరికివచ్చినది at last his words proved true. దానిని గురించి ఇంకా యేమాటా తెలియలేదు I do not yet know the result. మాటలకు పట్టుకొంటే విడవడు if he begins talking he will never stop. అదెక్కడిమాట what nonsense! such a thing is impossible. మాటలు మంచివే కాణి మనసు మంచిదికాదు he talks well but has a bad heart. ఇంకా మాటలు రాని బిడ్డ a child that cannot yet speak. వానికి ఆ ఊరిలో మాట వాసికద్దు లేక మాట సాగుతుంది he has influence in the town. ఆయన మాటకు ఎదురులేదు his word is law. మాటలకుమాత్రము పేదరికములేదు as far as words go he is rich enough. ఒక మాట యిచ్చి పదిమాటలు తీసుకొన్నాడు his reproaches were returned ten-fold. మాటకాడు māṭa-kāḍu. n. A good public speaker, సభయందు భయములేక మాటాడువాడు, వక్త. మాటకారి māṭa-kāri. n. A skilful speaker, యుక్తిగా మాటాడువాడు. A talkative person, వాచాలుడు. మాటలమారి māṭala-māri. n. A talkative person, మిక్కిలి మాటాడువాడు. మాటలాడు, మాటాడు or మాట్లాడు māṭa-l-āḍu. v. n. To speak, talk, converse, to reproach. నన్నెందుకు ఊరికె మాటలాడుతావు why reproach me for nothing? S. iii. 41.

(p. 1164) vikalpamu vikalpamu. [Skt.] n. Confusion, doubt, indecision, ambiguity, an alternative opinion, option. ద్వైవిధ్యము, సందేహము, భ్రాంతి. వికల్పము or వైకల్పికము adj. Optional, admitting of two forms (in grammar); alternative, ద్వివిధమైన, సందిగ్ధమైన.

(p. 1176) vidhi vidhi. [Skt.] n. An order, command, rule, law. నియోగము, విధానము. An act prescribed by the Vedas; an ordinance; duty. వేదశాస్త్రోక్తవిధి, ఏర్పాటు. Providence. Fate, destiny, luck. భాగ్యము. Brahma, God. విధిలేక వెళ్లినాను having no alternative I went there పదిదినములు నీవు ఇక్కడ ఉండక విధిలేదు there is no alternative, you must remain here for ten days, నావిధినేముందును this is my fate, what can I say? విధవశమున దొరికినది, లేక, చిచక్కినది it was found by chance. యథావిధిగా నడిచినది it was done according to rule. విధించు vidhinṭsu. v. a. To order, command, ordain, prescribe, allot, adjudge, assign. ఆజ్ఞాపించు, నిర్ణయించు, ఏర్పాటుచేయు, కట్టడచేయు. వానికి ప్రాయశ్చిత్తము విధించినారు they appointed him a penance. ఈ శీక్ష విధింపబడినది this punishment was awarded. యాభైరూపాయలు అపరాధము (లేక, జులమానా) విధించినారు they sentenced him to pay a fine of Rs. 50. విధ్యుక్తము vidh-yuktamu. adj. Prescribed, legal, యథావిధియైన. విధ్యుక్తముగా vidh-yuktamu-gā. adv. Legally, in proper form or manner, యథావిధిగా.

(p. 1227) vaikalpikamu vai-kalpikamu. [Skt. from వికల్పము.] adj. Doubtful, alternative, optional, వికల్పముచేతకలిగిన, సందిగ్ధమైన, పక్షాంతరమైన.
