(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 6) aṅguḍutuḍipi anguḍu-tuḍupi. [Tel.] n. A backbiter, incendiary. ఇక్కడిమాట అక్కడ అక్కడి మాట యిక్కడ చెప్పేవాడు, తంటాలమారి.

(p. 8) aṇṭukonu anṭu konu. [Tel.] v. n. To cleave, adhere to, stick, stick as paste. To catch fire. వాడు దాన్ని అంటుకొని పోయినాడు he carried her away, he has run away with her. అ యిల్లు అంటు కొస్నది the house has caught fire. వాదు వా వుస్మకముసు అంటుకొని పోయినాడు he stole my book. ఊపిరిమాత్రము అంటుకొనియున్నది his breath just remains in him. వానికడుపు వెన్నుతో అంటుకొనిపోయినది his belly sticks to his back-bone, i. e., he is emaciated.

(p. 17) ambāri or అంభారి amoāri. [H.] A howdah; the seat or throne on an elephant's back హోదా.

(p. 27) accanagaṇḍlu, accanagāyalu or అచ్చనగుండ్లు aṭṭsana-gunḍlu. [Tel. singular అచ్చనకల్లు;] n. Chuck-stones. Pebbles which are tossed up, and caught on the back of the hand, in a game played by girls. 'ముదురువెన్నెల గాయ ముత్యాలదిన్నెపై పైడియచ్చనగండ్లు పారవైచి.' Yayati. iii. 149. అచ్చనలాడు or అచ్చనగాయలాడు to toss up balls and catch them on the back of the hand. నలాడండననియె నమ్మునితోడన్.' Jai. Bhar. i. 62.

(p. 52) ani ani. [Tel.] (Past p|| of అను to say) Having said. This is translated by the word 'That' or 'so' or the infinitive mood is used, as వారు అక్కడ ఉండినారని అన్నాడు he told me that they were there. అవతల వెళ్లరాదని తిరిగీ వస్తిమి we did not think it right to go on and returned; we thought we must not go further; so we came back. నన్ను పొమ్మని చెప్పెను he told me to go. తన సొమ్మని యెంచి considering it his own. దాన్ని నాకని కొన్నాడు he bought it for me. కావలెనని అక్కడికి పోయినాడు he went there on purpose. పండ్లను పటపటమని కొరికినాడు he gnashed his teeth. ఘమ్మని fragrantly. తళుక్కని brilliantly. గడగడమని మాట్లాడినాడు he spoke rapidly. ఈగలు జుమ్మని ముసురు కొన్నవి the flies covered it buzzingly. నీవు ఈ శాలువ కప్పుకొంటే గుమ్మని ఉండును if you wear this shawl it feels warm: or, you will feel warm.

(p. 56) anubimbiñcu anu-bimbinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To reflect or throw back an image. ప్రతిఫలించు.

(p. 63) apahariñcu apa-harinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To pillage, plunder, take by violence or deceit, usurp. ముచ్చిలించు, అన్యాయముగా ఎత్తుకొని పోవు. అపహరణము apa-haraṇamu. [Skt.] n. Plundering, purloining, carrying off, stealing. చౌర్యము, ముచ్చిలించడము, అన్యాయముగా ఎత్తుకొని పోవడము. అపహర్త n. One who carries away by force or violence, a thief, rogue. అపహారము apahāramu. [Skt.] n. Pillage, plunder, taking by violence. దోచుకోవడము. సర్వస్వాపహారము robbing of everything. హాదత్తాపపాదము taking back a gift. దత్తాహృతము adj. that which is robbed or stolen.

(p. 79) aravāyi ara-vāyi. [Tel.] n. Hesitation, timorousness. వెనుకదీయడము. అధైర్యము. అరవాయిగొను v. n. To draw back, retract, retire, retreat. వెనుకదీయు, అధైర్యపడు, సంకోచించు. 'అట్టియోధలు బోరనరవాయిగొందురె.' M. V. i. 263.

(p. 85) arvamu arvamu. [Skt.] A horse. గుర్రము. అర్వారోహణము mounting on horse-back.

(p. 92) avaṭamu avaṭamu. [Skt.] n. A hole in the ground, a cavity, a pit, a well. గొయ్యి, బొక్క, నుయ్యి. అవటువు avaṭuvu. [Skt.] n. The back of the neck. పెడతల, అనగా, మెడ వెనుకటి భాగము, ముచ్చిలిగుంట. 'ఉన్నమి తావటు విలభిహారంబుల బేరెంబులవారెనో యనన్.' Vasu. iv. 39. 'అవటుకచంబువాని.' A. vi. 23. టీ పెడ తలను మాత్రమే వెంట్రుకలు గలవానిని.

(p. 95) avalōkiñcu ava-lōkinṭsu. [Skt. Root connected with the English word Look.] v. n. To look at. చూచు, వీక్షించు. అవలోకనము n. Sight, seeing. చూడడము. పురావలోకనము re-perusal. సింహావలోకనము retrospection. సింహావలోన పద్యము a verse in which every line looks back to the beginning. వాని ముఖావలోకనము చేయరాదు one should not look at his face. అవలోకితము adj. That which is seen. చూడబడినది.

(p. 99) aśvamu aṣvamu. [Skt.] n. A horse. గుర్రము. అశ్వగతి the pace of a horse. అశ్వదూత a messenger who rides on horseback. అశ్వపాది horsefooted. అశ్వమేథము the sacrifice of a horse, performed anciently by Hindu rajahs. అశ్వరథము a carriage drawn by horses. గుర్రపు బండి, గుర్రాలబండి. అశ్వవైద్యుడు a veterinary surgeon. అశ్వశాల a stable. అశ్వశాస్త్రము veterinary science. అశ్వశిక్ష the training of horses. అశ్వశిక్షకుడు a rough-rider, a horse-breaker. అశ్వారూఢుడు or అశ్వారోహుడు one who is mounted on horseback. రవుతు.

(p. 102) asimi asimi. [Tel.] n. A bag placed on the back of a bullock to carry things. ఎద్దు మీద వేయు గోనె వలె కుట్టిన సంచి. అసిమి గొల్లెన asimi-gollena. [Tel.] n. A kind of small tent. ఇరుప్రక్కలను వంపుగా శాలువలె నేర్పరిచిన చిన్నగుడారము. 'మునుపుగానేగియసి మిగొల్లెనలుపన్ని' కళా viii.
