(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 2) aṅkaṇamu ankanamu. [Tel. related to అంగ and అడుగు, the foot; borrowed by Skt. from Dravidian languages. Cf. Kittel and Gundert.] n. The act of branding or marking. Intercolumniation. Apartment. The space between any two beams, or pillars. రెండు దూలముల, లేక, స్తంభముల నడిమి ప్రదేశము. నలుచదరపుచోటు; తొట్టికట్టు. అంకణమునకు రూపాయి బాడిగ' the rent of each apartment is one rupee. మీదెన్ని అంకణముల యిల్లు how many apartments are there in your house? how big is it?

(p. 11) antarāḷamu antarāḷamu. [Skt.] n. The middle space; interval between the earth and sky.

(p. 11) antarikṣamu anta-rikshamu. [Skt.] n. The Sky, atmosphere. Lit. What is seen in the middle, i.e., the space between the earth and the sky.

(p. 12) antasthalu antasthalu. [Skt.] n. A name given in grammar to the four consonants y,r,l,v,య, ర, ల, వ, which are considered by the Sanskrit Grammarians to be semi-vowels, and 'to be intermediate between vowels and consonants, or because they stand between the consonants and the sibilants in the alphabet.' Wms. అంతస్థమద్గరము in anat. the malleus of the ear.

(p. 20) akkaramu for అక్షరము akkaramu. [Skt.] n. A letter of the alphabet. వర్ణము.

(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 24) agise or అగిశ or అవిసెచెట్టు agise. [Tel.] n. Common flax, or lint. Linum usitatissimum; also, a leguminous tree. (Coronilla grandiflora or Ӕschynomene grandiflora, planted as a support for the betel vine.) అడివి అవిసె Kauchinia parviflora. అగిసె కూర its leaves which are dressed and eaten. ఉమ, అనగా, నూనె తీసే అవిశవిత్తులు అవిసె నూనె linseed oil. సీమ అవిసె broad leaved Cassia. (Ainslie.) నల్ల అవిసె black flax. See అవిసె.

(p. 27) acittu a-chittu. [Skt.] n. That which has no life or understanding. Matter, as opposed to mind చిదచిద్ జ్ఞానము knowledge of the distinction between matter and mind.

(p. 33) aḍakatti or అడకత్త or అడకొత్తు aḍakatti. [Tel. from అడ్డ+కత్తి. lit. cross knife.] n. Nippers for cutting betel-nut.

(p. 34) aḍapakatte or అడవక్తత్తియ aḍapa-katte. [Tel. from అడపము.] n. A woman in waiting, who carries her mistress's betel nut pouch and serves it out. తాంబూలము మడిచియిచ్చే బోనకత్తె. 'అడపకత్తియ యిచ్చు వీడెంబుగైకొనన్' Satyabha. iii. 143. అడపకాడు masculine of అడపకత్తె.

(p. 34) aḍapamu aḍapamu. [Tel.] n. A pouch for betel-nut; a barber's case for razors. వక్కలాకుల సంచి, మంగలవానిపొది.

(p. 38) aḍḍamu aḍḍamu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, A screen. అభ్యంతరము, ఆటంకము, చటు. A pledge తాకట్టు నీ మాటకు అడ్డము లేదు no one will resist you. వాండ్లకు మాకు గోడ అడ్డముగా ఉండినది there was a wall between them and us. ఒక నగను అడ్డము పెట్టి యిరువైరూపాయలు తెచ్చినాడు he pawned a jewel and got twenty rupees. నా పనికి అడ్డము వచ్చినాడు he opposed my endeavours. మొగుణ్ని అడ్డముపెట్టుకొని తానే అన్ని పనులు చూచుకొనిపోయినది she used her husband as a screen and carried on the business. వాడు తండ్రికి అడ్డమాడుతాడు he opposes or contradicts his father. తిరుపతికి పోయేలోగా మూడేళ్లు అడ్డమువస్తవి there are three rivers to cross on the way to Tirupati. ఏదో ఒకటి వచ్చి అడ్డముపడినది something has got in the way. వానికి అడ్డము తగిలినారు they interrupted him. కొంతదూరము దోవనే పోయి అవతల అడ్డము తిరిగినాడు or అడ్డము తొక్కినాడు he went along some way and then cut across. 'కరాగ్రములు దృష్టులకడ్డమిడుచు.' BD. iv. 1532. అడ్డముగా aḍḍamu-gā. [Tel.] adv. Crosswise, across, transversely. చెట్టు కండ్లకు అడ్డముగానున్నది the tree intercepts the view, నేను అడ్డముగా నిలిస్తిని I stood in his way.

(p. 68) abvābu abvābu. [H.] n. (Lit. Doors, chapters.) Miscellaneous revenue accounts. 'The usual heads in Revenue accounts are Mal and Abwab. The Mal or Regular revenue is collected on land and customs, including taxes on liquors, &c The Abwab, or Miscellaneous includes the difference of exchange (often considerable) between that of the market and the fixed rate at which the revenue of the district is paid, casual aid or support of the Government officers, fees to the shroff, and contributions to various feasts.'
