(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 128) āśīrvacanamu , ఆశీర్వాదము āṣīr-vachanamu. [Skt.] n. A blessing or benediction. ఆశిర్వదించు āsīrvadinṭsu. v. a. To bless, give a benediction. ఆశీస్సు āṣīssu. n. A blessing.

(p. 236) kaḍupu or కడ్పు kaḍupu. [Tel.] n. The belly or stomach. వాని కడుపు కాలుచున్నది he is very hungry; కడుపు కట్టుకొను to stint oneself, restrain one's appetite. కడుపుమంట heart burning, malice, envy. ఓర్వలేమి, ఈర్ష్య. వాని కడుపులోని మాట the thoughts of his heart. నన్ను కడుపులో పెట్టుకొని పెంచెను he reared me tenderly. కడుపుతోనుండు to be pregnant or with child. కడుపుదిగినది she had a miscarriage. కడుపుదించు to effect miscarriage, to cause an abortion. పరకడుపు an empty or fasting stomach. పొత్తికడుగు an empty or fasting stomach. పొత్తికడుపు the abdomen. కడుపు చల్లగా నుండుట to be happy or blessed. కాడువునోపి belly ahe, stomach ache. కడుపూద. (కడుపు+ఊద.) a cattle disease in which the belly is bloated; also, envy ఓర్వలేనితనము, ఈర్ష్య.

(p. 242) kannaḍamu kannaḍamu. [Tel.] n. The Canara or Carnatic; a name including the Telugu and Canarese countries. Canarese language. కన్నడ అక్షరము the Canarese character. కర్ణాటకము. కన్నడికలశము kannaḍi-kalaṣamu. n. The 'blessed light' or holy candle. See ఆరతి. కన్నడి or కన్నడీడు kannaḍi. n. A native of Canarese country. కర్ణాటదేశస్థుడు. Also, a contemner ఉపేక్షించువాడు.

(p. 269) kāta or కావుత kāḷa. [Tel. from అగు.] An affix in blessing. May it be so! అగుగాక.

(p. 406) caraṇamu charaṇamu. [Skt.] n. The foot. పాదము; the root of a tree వేరు. A walk or ramble, roaming. తిరుగుట. In poetry, a couplet. చరణాయుధము the heel armed, i.e., a cock కోడి. కృష్ణచరణాలు (lit. the black footsteps) the spectacles on the crest of a Cobra. రథచరణము a wheel. చరణారవిందములు charaṇ-āra-vindamulu. n. The 'blessed feet' --a phrase for any beloved personage.

(p. 444) calla ṭsalla. [Tel.] n. Curds beaten with water, buttermilk. మజ్జిగ. చల్లకైవచ్చి ముంత దాచనేల, చల్లకు పోయి ముంత దాచడమేమి why conceal your pot when you come for buttermilk, i.e., why do you beat about the bush? or, why mince the matter? చల్ల or చల్లని adj. Cool, cold. శీతము. Benign, merciful, healing. Comfortable. చల్లకము ṭsallakamu. n. Sprinkling. Watering, irrigation. చల్లుట. చల్లకడి ṭsalla-kaḍi. n. Flummery: buttermilk mingled with fenugreek. మెంతిమజ్జిగ. చల్లకవ్వము ṭsalla-kavvamu. n. A churn-staff: The bird called King-fisher: also a name for the insect called గొల్ల భామపురుగు mantis precatoria. చల్లగడ్డ ṭsalla-gaḍda. n. The linear leaved asparagus. Asparagus sarmentosus, Willden. Hamsa. iv. 12. Ainslie. ii. 409. Rox. ii. 151. Watts. శతమూలి. చల్లగా ṭsalla-gā. adv. Easily, gently, well, safely, comfortably: in good health, softly, deliberately. చల్లగాచూచు to look at or regard with satisfaction. చల్లగామాట్లాడు to speak coolly or gently. మీదొరతనము చల్లగా నుండవలెను may your reign be peaceful! వాని చెయ్యి చల్లగా నుండవలెను may his hand be blessed! 'తే అందరికి నన్నివగల నానాందమిచ్చి, చల్లచేయగ.' (Ila. i. 79.) with her graces she charmed them all, cheering and refreshing their hearts. కన్నులచల్లచేసె. (T. ii.38.) it cheered his eyes. చల్లని చెయ్యగల వైద్యుడు a physician with a lucky hand. చల్లనిప్రభువు a kind master. చల్లచప్పుడు ṭsalla-ṭsappuḍu. n. A fool జడుడు. చల్లచీమ or చలిచీమ ṭsalla-chīma. n. A black ant, so called because it is benign or merciful in not stinging as the red ant does. చల్లజంపు ṭsalla-zampu. n. One who kills in cold blood. A cruel man భయంకరుడు. చల్లటి ṭsllaṭi. adj. Cool Convex. చల్లటిబిళ్ల a convex plate of glass. as distinguished from అద్దపుబిల్ల a pane. చల్లడము or చల్లాడము ṭsallaḍamu. n. Tight drawers or breeches: short trousers, which reach as far as the middle of the thigh. The loose skirt end of the waist band that hangs in front: ఇ౛ారు, సగముతొడవరకు తొడుగుకొనే గుడిగి. చల్లదనము or చల్లన ṭsalla-danamu. n. Coolness, coldness. చల్లనీరుకణితి ṭsalla-nīru-kaṇiti. n. A sort of fish. A species of sparus. Russell's fishes. No. 104. చల్లలపడు ṭsalla-paḍu. v. n. To cool. చల్లన గు. చల్లరసము Same as చల్లకడి. చల్లరాడు tsalla-rāḍu. n. The post (తరికంబము) round which the string passes, which works the churning stick. చల్లవడియము tsalla-caḍiyamu. n. A kind of cake. వడియములలో ఒకభేదము. చల్లచేయు ṭsalla-chēyu. v. t. To cool. చల్లపరుచు. చలల్లారు tsallāru.v. n. To grow cool. చల్లపడు. To become calm, to be allayed, restrained or pacified ఉపశమిల్లు. To be extinguished. చల్లార్చు tsall-āruṭsu. v. a. To cool or calm, to allay, restrain or pacify, to extinguish.

(p. 418) ciramu chiramu. [Skt.] adj. Long (as regards time.) ఆలస్యము, కాలవిలంబము. చిరకాలము a long while. చిరాయువు long life. చిరంజీవి or చిరజీవి chiran-jīvi. n. What is long lived: (particularly) a crow. కాకి. adj. Long lived. చిరకాలము జీవించువాడు. This is a term of affection, implying a blessing, often used to inferiors, children, younger brothers or other relations. చిరంజీవులైన మాసీతారామయ్య my brother Sītāräma; చిరంజీవులైన కొల్లా వెంకన్నభార్య గతించిన సంగతి regarding the death of our dear cousin's wife. చిరంతనము or చిరత్నము chirantanamu. adj. Old, ancient, antiquated. బహుదినములది, పాతది.

(p. 597) dīpamu dīpamu. [Skt.] n. A lamp a light. దీపముపెట్టు dīpamu-peṭṭu. v. n. To light a lamp. Metaphorically, to sustain a man's household. Also, to offer prayers for blessing on a benefactor: thus, తమ పాదాలకు దీపము పెట్టుకొంటాను. (Lit.) I will light a candle (in the chapel) to thy feet, i.e., I will offer thee worship of thankfulness. దీపకము dīpakamu. n. A light దీపము. adj. That which burns. వెలిగించునది. Omum seeds, ఓమము, వాము. Also. used for దీమము. (q. v.) దీపవల్లి dīpa-ralli. n. The wick of a lamp. దీపపువత్తి. దీపవృక్షము dīpa-vriksḥamu. n. A candelabrum, al lamp-stand. దీపస్తంభము. దీపారాధన dīp-ārādhana. n. The rite of offering a light to a god. The lighting up lamps at a shrine. దీపావళి (దీప+ఆవలి.) dīp-āvali. n. Lit: A row of lights, i.e., A feast held on the 14th day of the dark fortnight (bahula) in Aswayuja (answering to Oct. Nov.) wherein is commemorated the నరకాసురవధ. దీపించు. dīp-inṭsu. v. n. To shine, to be evident. to be distinguished or glorious. దీపిక dīpika. n. A lamp, a light. దీపము. ఆంధ్ర దీపిక the Lamp of Telugu, the name of a Telugu Dictionary. నీతిదీపిక lit. 'The lamp of Morals.' దీప్తి dīpti. n. Lustre. brilliancy. కాంతి, వెలుగు. దీప్యము dip-yamu. n. Cummin seed. ఓమము, జీలకర్ర.

(p. 598) dīviñcu dīvinṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To bless. ఆశీర్వదించు. దీవన or దీవెన dīvana. n. A blessing, a benediction. ఆశీర్వాదము. దీవెన వీడెము a farewell. దీవనబ్రాలు Same as అక్షతలు or సేసలు (q. v.) దీవెనకోల dīvena-kōla. n. A salutation. నమస్కారము.

(p. 661) nivāḷi , నివ్వాళి or నివాళిక nivāli [Tel.] n. Fumigation, for the sake of good luck. ఆరతి Burning incense. Pal. 126. నివాళించు nivāḷinṭsu. v. n. To bless, lustrate or purify by the ceremony of waving a lamp. ఆరతియెత్తు, నివాళి ఒసగు to fumigate in order to avert evil.
