(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 128) āśīrvacanamu , ఆశీర్వాదము āṣīr-vachanamu. [Skt.] n. A blessing or benediction. ఆశిర్వదించు āsīrvadinṭsu. v. a. To bless, give a benediction. ఆశీస్సు āṣīssu. n. A blessing.

(p. 269) kāta or కావుత kāḷa. [Tel. from అగు.] An affix in blessing. May it be so! అగుగాక.

(p. 418) ciramu chiramu. [Skt.] adj. Long (as regards time.) ఆలస్యము, కాలవిలంబము. చిరకాలము a long while. చిరాయువు long life. చిరంజీవి or చిరజీవి chiran-jīvi. n. What is long lived: (particularly) a crow. కాకి. adj. Long lived. చిరకాలము జీవించువాడు. This is a term of affection, implying a blessing, often used to inferiors, children, younger brothers or other relations. చిరంజీవులైన మాసీతారామయ్య my brother Sītāräma; చిరంజీవులైన కొల్లా వెంకన్నభార్య గతించిన సంగతి regarding the death of our dear cousin's wife. చిరంతనము or చిరత్నము chirantanamu. adj. Old, ancient, antiquated. బహుదినములది, పాతది.

(p. 597) dīpamu dīpamu. [Skt.] n. A lamp a light. దీపముపెట్టు dīpamu-peṭṭu. v. n. To light a lamp. Metaphorically, to sustain a man's household. Also, to offer prayers for blessing on a benefactor: thus, తమ పాదాలకు దీపము పెట్టుకొంటాను. (Lit.) I will light a candle (in the chapel) to thy feet, i.e., I will offer thee worship of thankfulness. దీపకము dīpakamu. n. A light దీపము. adj. That which burns. వెలిగించునది. Omum seeds, ఓమము, వాము. Also. used for దీమము. (q. v.) దీపవల్లి dīpa-ralli. n. The wick of a lamp. దీపపువత్తి. దీపవృక్షము dīpa-vriksḥamu. n. A candelabrum, al lamp-stand. దీపస్తంభము. దీపారాధన dīp-ārādhana. n. The rite of offering a light to a god. The lighting up lamps at a shrine. దీపావళి (దీప+ఆవలి.) dīp-āvali. n. Lit: A row of lights, i.e., A feast held on the 14th day of the dark fortnight (bahula) in Aswayuja (answering to Oct. Nov.) wherein is commemorated the నరకాసురవధ. దీపించు. dīp-inṭsu. v. n. To shine, to be evident. to be distinguished or glorious. దీపిక dīpika. n. A lamp, a light. దీపము. ఆంధ్ర దీపిక the Lamp of Telugu, the name of a Telugu Dictionary. నీతిదీపిక lit. 'The lamp of Morals.' దీప్తి dīpti. n. Lustre. brilliancy. కాంతి, వెలుగు. దీప్యము dip-yamu. n. Cummin seed. ఓమము, జీలకర్ర.

(p. 598) dīviñcu dīvinṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To bless. ఆశీర్వదించు. దీవన or దీవెన dīvana. n. A blessing, a benediction. ఆశీర్వాదము. దీవెన వీడెము a farewell. దీవనబ్రాలు Same as అక్షతలు or సేసలు (q. v.) దీవెనకోల dīvena-kōla. n. A salutation. నమస్కారము.

(p. 932) maṅgaḷamu mangalamu. [Skt.] n. Happiness, good fortune, well-being, welfare, prosperity. శుభము, క్షేమము. The lines at the opening of a poem in praise of some deity adj. (p. 1131) varamu varamu. [Skt.] n. A boon or blessing sought in prayer, a divine gift. దేవతాదుల వల్ల పడసిన అనుగ్రహము. adj. Best, excellent, noble. శ్రేష్ఠమైన. వరరత్నము an excellent gem. సరోవరము a beautiful lake. వరదుడు vara-duḍu. n. A benefactor, one who bestows a boon. వరమిచ్చువాడు, కోరికను నెరవేర్చువాడు. వరవర్ణిని vara-varṇini. n. An excellent woman, a woman in general. ఉత్తమస్త్రీ. ఆడుది. వరసతి vara-sati. n. A fine or excellent woman. నిండా పతివ్రతగానుండేటిది. Vēma. వరాంగము var-āngamu. n. The head, శిరస్సు. The organ of generation. వరారోహ var-ārōha. n. An excellent woman, a lady. ఉత్తమస్త్రీ. వరుడు varuḍu. n. A excellent man. శ్రేష్ఠుడు. One who chooses or selects (a wife), వరించువాడు. A husband, మగడు. A bridegroom, పెండ్లికొడుకు.

(p. 1342) subhaga su-bhaga. [Skt.] n. A pleasing or happy woman. ఇష్టురాలు, భాగ్యవంతురాలు. The cord is bound on the neck of the bride with a blessing that runs as follows, 'మాంగల్యతంతునానేన మమజీవన హేతునా కమఠేబధ్నామి సుభగే త)యంజీవశరదాంశతం.' సుభగము su-bhagamu. adj. Pleasing, gratifying to the eye, beautiful, charming. Beloved, dear; fortunate, auspicious. నేత్రోత్సవమైన, మనోహరమైన, శుభమైన, శోభనమైన. సుభగత su-bhaga-ta. n. Blessedness, auspiciousness; beauty, charm. శోభనత్వము, మోహరత, రమణీయత. సుభగుడు su-bhaguḍu. n. A fortunate man. భాగ్యవంతుడు.

(p. 1376) svasti svasti. [Skt.] A Skt. particle meaning Excellent; well done! may good attend you! may it be well with you! So be it; Amen. n. Welfare, క్షేమము, పుణ్యము, మంగళము, శుభము. 'స్వస్తియగుగాక.' హరి. వూ. iii. 'స్వస్తితేదనుజపరేణ్య.' N. iv. 129. 'స్వస్త్యస్తుసుగుణోస్తు.' H. i. 47. స్వస్తివాచనము a blessing or benediction, any benedictory speech. స్వస్తిచెప్పు to wish well. రాఘవాస్వస్తి రావణాస్వస్తి అని యుండడము (a proverb meaning) Bless them both and keep neutral.
