(p. 222) ḥ The H, as in the words దుఃఖము duhkhamu, స్వతః swatak, or, swataha. It is denominated విసర్గ Visarga and pronounced Aha and is used only in Sanskrit words.

(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 17) ambuvāhini ambu-vāhini. [Skt. Lit. a water-carrier.] A piece of palmyra trunk hollowed out and placed at the well to carry to the fields the water poured into it.

(p. 19) akāraṇamu a-kāraṇamu. [Skt.] adj. Groundless, causeless. నిర్హేతుకమైన. అకారణముగా without a reason. అకారణోత్పన్నము produced spontaneously. అకారత్ (H. incorrect form of అకారణముగా) without cause నిర్హేతుకముగా, ఊరక.

(p. 31) aṭu aṭu. [Tel.] adj. That. అటు తర్వాత after that. అటుపూర్వము Before that. అటుమొన్న the day before that preceding yesterday. ఏటికి అటుపక్క on the other side of the river. అటుపోక యెటు పోయెనో he did not go there, but is gone I know not whither. తురంగంబటునిటుబడి పారిపోయె the horse ran this way and that way and escaped. అటు atu. [Tel.] adv. So, thus, in that way or manner. అట్లు, ఆరీతిగా. అటువలెనే adv. In like manner. అదేరీతిగా. అటుగాన adv. Wherefore, therefore: so then if so.

(p. 37) aḍugu aḍugu. [Tel.] n. The foot, the footstep, a pace, step, the bottom, basis. A foot in length containing twelve inches. A line of verse. Thus four 'feet' make one stanza, or quatrain. చెట్టు అడుగు the foot of a tree. అడుగురాయి a stone at the bottom కొండ అడుగుననుండే ఊరు a village at the foot of a mountain. ఆ కథను అడుగునుంచి చెప్పు tell the story from the beginning. కుండ అడుగు the bottom of a pot. అడుగంటకోయు to cut off by the root. అడుగుతో పెళ్లగించు to eradicate, to root out. అడుగారిపోవు to be utterly ruined. నా మాటకు అడుగుదాటకు do not transgress my command. వాని అడుగుల జాడ పట్టుకొని పోయినారు they traced his footsteps and followed him. అడుగడుగున or అడుగడుగునకు step by step, now and then, often. అన్నము అడుగంటినది the rice has burnt at the bottom of the pot.

(p. 41) ativāsamu ati-vāsamu. [Skt.] The fast observed on the day preceding the ceremony in which oblations are presented to the manes of departed ancestors. శ్రాద్ధమునకు ముందు ఒక్క ప్రొద్దు ఉండే దినము.

(p. 51) anārambhamu an-ārambhamu. [Skt.] Absence of commencement. అనారంభ్యము not fit to be commenced.

(p. 52) anidampūrvamu anidampūrvamu. [Skt.] adj. Novel, unprecedented, unheard of. పూర్వమందు లేనటువంటి, చోద్యమైన, ఎన్నడును వినని కనని. 'అనిదంపూర్వ పరాక్రమధనుడు.' P. i. 113.

(p. 55) anutpannamu an-utpannamu. [Skt.] adj. Unborn, unproduced.

(p. 55) anulakṣitamu an-upalakshitamu. [Skt.] adj. Unseen, unobserved, unnoticed.

(p. 61) apakīrti apa-kīrti. [Skt.] n. Ill-fame. Infamy. an ill-name. చెడ్డపేరు, దుర్యశము, దూరు. వారికి అపకీర్తి వచ్చినది they were disgraced.

(p. 67) abdhi abdhi. [Skt. ఆప్+ధి] n. The sea. సముద్రము. అబ్ధిజ Lakshmi, having been produced at the churning of the sea of milk. అబ్ధియగ్ని submarine fire. అబ్ధిపల్లవము n. Coral. పగడము.

(p. 69) abhijātamu abhi-jātamu. [Skt.] adj. Born, produced. అభిజాతుడు a high caste man, a man of a high family. మంచి కులమున బుట్టినవాడు.

(p. 69) abhijittu , అభిజిత్తువేళ or అభిజిల్లగ్నము abhi-gittu. [Skt.] n. The Zenith, midday, the 24 minutes immediately preceding and the 24 following midday. పగటిలో ఎనిమిదో ముహూర్తము.
