(p. 68) abvābu abvābu. [H.] n. (Lit. Doors, chapters.) Miscellaneous revenue accounts. 'The usual heads in Revenue accounts are Mal and Abwab. The Mal or Regular revenue is collected on land and customs, including taxes on liquors, &c The Abwab, or Miscellaneous includes the difference of exchange (often considerable) between that of the market and the fixed rate at which the revenue of the district is paid, casual aid or support of the Government officers, fees to the shroff, and contributions to various feasts.' Malcolm, vol. ii. p. 48.

(p. 76) ayi (past p|| of అగు to become.) Having become, turned into. మాకు అయి నిలిచినాడు he stood like a post., i.e., he has transfixed with surprise &c. దొంగ అయి తిరుగుతున్నాడు he has turned thief. పోకిరి అయిపోయినాడు he has become a wicked fellow. అయిన (past rel. p|| of అగు to become.) Accomplished, becoming, agreeable, suitable. అయినపని a work that is accomplished, a becoming art. అయిన పెండ్లాము a good wife. అయినమందు a suitable medicine. అయినమనిషి a useful or proper man. అయినవాండ్లు friends, relations. See కాని. అయిన is also used to change nouns into adjectives as సొగసైన పిల్ల, ఆశ్చర్యమైన కార్యము a wonderful deed. For other uses, see under ఐన.

(p. 77) araka araka. [Tel.] n. A plough with bullocks complete. సర్వావయవములుగల నాగటికి ఎడ్లను పూనినది. అరకలుకట్టు to harness a team. అరకలువిప్పు to unyoke the cattle. ఒక యెద్దు చనిపోయినది, అరకసాగక తొందరగానున్నది I cannot carry on my ploughing well as one of my bullocks is dead. అరకట్టరక a plough with a pair of bullocks. విడిచికట్టరక a plough with a change of bullocks. అరకాడు ara-kāḍu. (from అరక+కాడు) n. A cultivator, a ryot.

(p. 205) oṇṭu onṭu. [Tel.] n. A share, division. A village community గ్రామసమూహము. A unit in numeration. సారెని ఒంటు the place or square in which a counter stands in a game at draughts. ఒంటు or ఒంటుబావిలి. n. A sort of ear-ring worn by by men. పురుషులకర్ణభూషణము. ఒంటు v. i. To agree with one's health, to be wholesome or salubrious. ఇముడు, అనుకూలించు. To touch, to go near, to approach చేరు. ఆ దేశానికిన్ని ఈ దేశమునకున్ను ఒంటక ఆశక్తముగానున్నది or అక్కడి నీళ్లకును ఇక్కడి నీళ్లకును. ఒంటనందున వానికి ఒళ్లు కుదురులేదు his health suffered from change of water, (change of air.) See on నీళ్లు. ఒంటుకొను onṭu-konu. v. i. To touch, go near. తాకు. చేరు.

(p. 288) kuṇḍa kunḍa. [Tel.] n. An earthern pot. A pot. కుంచుకుంట a bell metal pot. A gilt ball on the crest of a tent, &c. కలశము. A bush in a carriage wheel ఇరుసుతగిలించే బండికంటి నడిమిగుబ్బ. కుండగోకరి kunḍa-gōkari. [కుండగోకు+అరి.] n. A cook. వంటవాడు (వల. ద్విపద, 2. భా.) కుండపోగులు Same as కుండలములు. కుండమార్చు kunḍa-mārṭsu. v. t. To exchange one thing for another. ఒకటినిచ్చి మరొకటిని పుచ్చుకొను.

(p. 336) kro kro. [Tel.] adj. The word క్రొత్త is contracted into క్రొత్త in compounds in the following hard or soft consonants in Telugu words are doubled as క్రొక్కన్ను (క్రొత్త+కన్ను), క్రొక్కారు (క్రొత్త+కారు), క్రొత్తావి (క్రొత్త+తావి) , క్రొన్నన (క్రొత్త+నన), క్రొన్నలుపు, క్రొన్నురుగు, క్రొన్నెత్తురు, క్రొన్నల, క్రొమ్ముడి, క్రొమ్మెరుగు. క్రొమ్మొన, క్రొవ్వాడి, క్రొవ్విరి. &c. In some cases, this change is made even when a Skt. word follows, as క్రొమ్మేఘములు (భీ. iii.) In some cases, again, when a hard consonant follows, క్రొత్త is contracted into క్రొం where the సున్న stands for the letter ను but the succeding consonant is not doubled but changed into a soft one, as క్రొం౛ాయ, క్రొంజెమట, క్రొందమ్మి, క్రొంబసిడి, క్రొంబొగ, &c.

(p. 345) g ga. [Tel. & Skt. formed from the shape of the legs in walking.] The letter G as in great. Some Telugu words at pleasure change the letter G into V. Thus పగలు or పవలు, తీగ or తీవ. So in English, thus: guile and wile; gate and way; guard and ward; guise, and wise.

(p. 352) gaḍiya gaḍiya. [Tel.] n. A bolt or bar. గడెమ్రాను. గడియజేయు to bolt or fasten a bolt. గడియకన్నము a hole bored by a thief, through which he puts his hand to draw back the bolt. గడియ or ఘడియ n. A Hindu hour which consists of twenty four English minutes, and thus forms the sixtieth part of a day. గడియకు ఒక మాట చెప్పెను he changed his opinion hourly. గడియ యేడైయుండగా each hour seemed a year. గడియారము gaḍiyā-ramu. n. A clock, originally a cup for measuring the hours by sinking in water. జేబుగడియారము a watch.

(p. 366) gi . gi. [Tel.] n. In speaking slightingly, a word is repeated with its initial short syllable changed into గి as అన్నగిన్న, పింకన్న గింకన్న, &c.

(p. 369) gī gī. [Tel.] In speaking contemptuously or slightingly, a word is repeated with the initial long syllable changed into గీ as రాముడు, గీముడు. See on గి.

(p. 375) guṇamu guṇamu. [Skt.] n. A quality, property, virtue, disposition, temper, character, or attribute. Tendency, effect, purpose, use. A symptom as of disease. వానికి గుణమువచ్చినది he is now come to his senses. నీలగుణము blackness. మంచి గుణము goodness, good temper. మోహగుణము the passion of lust. వానికి గుణముగానున్నది he is better, he has recovered. పది రూపాయలుయిస్తే గుణమే if he gives ten rupees so much the better. అందువల్ల యేమిగుణము what is the use of it? వానితో మాట్లాడితే గుణము లేదు there is no good in speaking to him. పది గుణములుగల or గడియకు ఒక గుణముగల freakish, changeable, whimsical వాంతిభ్రాంతిగుణము an attack or symptoms of cholera. The three Gunas are Rajah (passion) Tamah foulness: and Satvam (Truth). Added to a numeral, thus ద్విగుణము twice as much or two-fold. త్రిగుణము thrice as much, or three-fold. గుణము n. A cord, a string. త్రాడు. A bow string. అల్లెత్రాడు. గుణధ్వని the sound of the bowstring. గుణపడు guṇa-paḍu. v. n. To recover, improve, ameliorate. గుణమగు guṇa-m-agu. v. n. To recover. వారికి గుణమైనది they have improved. గుణమిచ్చు guṇa-m-iṭsṭsu. v. n. To affect favourably, as medicine, to improve the health. గుణము చేయు guṇamu-chēyu n. The cure. గుణవంతుడు or గుణయుతుడు guṇa-vantuḍu. n. A worthy or good man. గుణవతి guṇa-vati. n. A good woman. గుణి or గుణుడు guṇi. adj. Endowed or gifted with good qualities. 'గుణగుణంబులరీతి కూడిమాడి' (Paidimarri. iv. 214.) united as closely as goodness and the good, as the virtuous and virtue. అధికగుణుడు highly distinguished. గుణించు or గుణియించు guṇinṭsu. v. a. To multiply, calculate. To spell. గుణితము guṇitamu. n. Multiplication, spelling. గుణ్యత guṇyata. n. Excellence, goodness, worth. 'గుణ్యత యేమైననుసరి ప్రాణ్యవనము చేయవలయు.' T. iii. 96.

(p. 413) ciṭlu or చిటులు chiṭlu. [Tel.] v. n. To snap, split, crack (as a fruit), burst. వెంట్రుక చిట్లినది a hair has split. చిట్లని unblown, unopened. చిట్లుకట్టె a person of a very irritable temper. మిక్కిలి కోపము గలవాడు. చిట్లుజిట్ట chiṭlu-jiṭṭa. n. The Nilgiri Flower-pecker. Dicæum Concolor, or, the Thick-billed Flower-pecker. Piprisoma squalidam. (F.B.I.) చిట్లించు chiṭlinṭsu. v. a. To crack, break. To burst, split. A. i. 23. v. n. To break, snap, crack, split, burst or be chopped, as the ground, the skin, paint, or the lips in fever. T. iv. 85. ముఖము చిట్లించు to frown. ముఖము చిట్లించుకొన్నారు they changed colour, were abashed, they looked sulky. చిట్లింతకూర chiṭlinta-kūra. n. A herb used in curries. Marselia Minuta. Heyne.

(p. 421) cillara chillara. [Tel.] adj. Retail, as a shop. Miscellaneous, sundry, stray, trifling, mean, of no note or importance, subordinate. Vile, base. చిల్లరవాండ్లు a mixed multitude, people of no consequence. చిల్లరనేబులు loose money, change. పదిరూపాయల పైచిల్లర ten rupees and odd. చిల్లరపూజ vain homage, empty adoration చిల్లరభ్రాంతులు empty fancies. చిల్లరవేల్పులు inferior deities. చిల్లరలు chillaralu. (p. 428) ceḍu cheḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To be spoiled or damaged. To become rotten or worthless. To become wicked or bad. To be dispelled, dissipated, or done away with as darkness. To become bad, damaged or ruined. నశించు, కనబడకపోవు. To change, be altered from its original state. 'నకారము చెడి అర్థబిందువు వచ్చెను (Appa. C. ii. 31.) the letter N is dropt and the nasal sign (sunna) is substituted.' అది చెడె it is ruined! వాసిచెడినకాంతి with diminished brilliancy. నీ సంశయము చెడును your doubts shall be dissipated. M. XIII. v. 97. చెడగొట్టు cheḍa-goṭṭu. v. t. To ruin, spoil. చెడనాడు cheḍa-n-āḍu. v. t. To blame. నిందించు. To curse. To say 'Be it ruined'! To scorn. To waste, throw away. చెడిప cheḍipa. (చెడిన+అప.) n. Bad, spoiled ruined, lost. Terrible, awful, tremendous. Hard, cruel. n. Evil. కీడు. మంచిచెడ్డలు good and bad. కులముచెడ్డవాడు one who has lost caste. తలచెడ్డచెట్టు a pollard, a tree that has lost its head. చెడ్డతనము cheḍḍa-tanamu. n. Badness, wickedness, severity.
