(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 175) ūta ūta. [Tel.] n. A support, a prop. A fishing hook, a basket snare to catch fish. A coop to keep animals in. A pannier. అనటుల యూతగొని leaning against the plantain trees. ఊతకమ్మినట్టు పట్టినాడు he held the cudgel at my face as close as possible. ఊతగా నిలిచి he stood as a support. ఊతకొను ūta-konu. v. n. To support oneself, to rest, lean on. ఊతకోల ūta-kōla. n. A staff to lean on. ఊతము ūtamu. n. Grasp, strength. పట్టు, బలము. ఈ మాట ఊతము చేసినాడు he relied on this statement. ఊతముగా పుచ్చుకొనెను he took it for granted. తన వ్యాజ్యమునకు ఊతము అయిన మాట a circumstance that was in his favour. ఊతము చేయు to state or declare, to strengthen. బలపరుచు.

(p. 221) aupādhikamu aupādhikamu. [Skt. from ఉపాధి.] adj. Temporary, not permanent. That which arises from circumstances. ఔపాధికశక్తి official authority: the power that circumstance or situation gives: ఔపాధిక శరీరము a bodily form assumed for a while, as in an incarnation.

(p. 328) kōraḍi kōraḍi. [Tel.] n. A bank or ridge. A hedge. ఆవరణముగా వేసిన పొడిమట్టిగోడ. Ridicule కోరడము, అపహాస్యము. The ferule on the butt of a chisel hilt. A statement recorded of a man's descent, character and circumstances. కోరడిగట్టు kōraḍi-gaṭṭu. n. A bank, or ridge, an earth-fence.

(p. 637) nalugu , నలగు or నలియు nalugu. [Tel.] v. n. To break. To be broken, bruised, crushed, crumpled or reduced to powder. నలియగు. To rub with a fragrant paste నలుగుపెట్టు. To become easy, smooth, or familiar by acquaintance. To wither, be weakened or debilitated. ఆ పాఠము అతనికి నలిగినది the lesson has become familiar to him. దోవ యింకా నలగలేదు the road is not yet trodden smooth. వారు జగడమాడగా నేను నలిగిపోతిని they were the disputants but I was the sufferer, I was crushed between them. వారు నలిగిపోయినాడు they are in reduced circumstances. ఒళ్లు నలిగియున్నది the limbs are quite tired. నలుగు nalugu. n. Rubbing, scrubbing the limbs with fragrant paste made usually of పెసలు. నలుగుపెట్టు to rub the limbs with paste. నలుగు or నలుగుపిండి n. A sort of fragrant paste used as soap. నలుగుడు or నలగుడు naluguḍu. n. Difficulty, trouble, pain, suffering. పిడనము, సంకటము, తొందర, ఇబ్బంది 'అతండు నలుగుడుబడరాదో మగువ.' Suca. iii. 333. That which is thrashed or bruised. నలిగినది. నలుగుడుపెట్టు to oppress, to harass. నలగగొట్టు nalaga-goṭṭu. v. a. To pound, to bruise. వాణ్ని నలగకొట్టినారు they thrashed him severely. నలత or నల్త nalata. n. Debility: a weak state: the remains or constitutional effects of a disease. పురాణించిన రోగము. Convalescence, a bad state of health, lingering indisposition, a low fever. నలతగొట్టు nalata-goṭṭu. n. A make-bate, a thorn in one's side. నలుకువ or నలకువ nalukuva. n. Ailing, an ill state of health. వ్యాధి. Suffering, శ్రమము, బాధ. Weariness, ఆయాసము. నలుచు, నలచు or నలుపు naluṭsu. v. a. To crush. To rub the skin. నలియజేయు, తోము.

(p. 683) noccu noṭsṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To ache, smart, pain, be grieved. నొప్పినొంచు నొచ్చిఉండు వాడు a distressed man. నొచ్చిపోయిరి they were in reduced circumstances. నొచ్చుకొను noṭsṭsu-konu. v. n. To ache, repent, grieve, పశ్చాత్తాపపడు. నొచ్చుకోలు noṭsṭsukōlu. n. Repentance. పశ్చాత్తాపపడుట. నొవ్వ novva. adv. Achingly, acutely, sharply, painfully, so as to pain, smartingly. నొన్వనాడుట to speak severely. నొవ్వని novvani. adj. Painless, not aching, easy. నొవ్వి, నొవ్వు, నోవు or నోవి novvi. n. Pain, suffering, వేదన. Disease, sickness, వ్యాధి. నోవరి a sick person, వ్యాధిగలవాడు.

(p. 694) pacca paṭsṭsa. [Tel.] n. Lit: Leaf colour. Green, yellowish green, yellow colour, (a leaf being first green, then fading into yellow.) An emerald, మరకతము. Any figure punctured or tattooed into the skin, because it is coloured green. A green plant or tree. cf. 'పైరుపచ్చ' adj. Green, yellow, sallow. (The word పచ్చ radically means Bright, fair-coloured.) పచ్చ పొడుచుకొను to tattoo the skin. ఆకుపచ్చ or హరిదళపచ్చ yellow. కలంకారిపచ్చలు a sort of cloth, or painted chintz. See on పచ్చి. Various shades of green are called కప్పుపచ్చ a still lighter tint, రాతిపచ్చ emerald green, చిలకపచ్చ bright green, మక్కిపచ్చి dirty dark green. వాని కండ్లు పచ్చపారినవి he has the jaundice. వారు ఇప్పుడు పచ్చగానున్నారు they are now in prosperous circumstances. కాపు పచ్చగా నుంటే రాజు చూడలేడు the king cannot bear to see a thriving farmer. పచ్చనరాలు the blue veins. పచ్చగువ్వ a bright yellow green bird; the green pigeon. పచ్చపైకము a good coin. HD. ii. 153. పచ్చకట్లపాము a green snake. పచ్చకన్నులమెకము paṭsṭsakannula-mekamu. n. Lit: The yellow eyed beast, i.e., a lion, హర్యక్షము. పచ్చకర్పూరము paṭsṭsa-karpūramu. n,. Green coloured camphor: crude camphor. This is the name of a brilliant white drug, used to curve the eye, which real camphor injures. It is not in lumps but is a powder. పచ్చకామెరలు paṭsṭsa-kāmerulu. n. Jaundice. పచ్చజిట్ట paṭsṭsa-jiṭṭa. n. The common Iora (a small green and yellow bird.) Ӕgithina tiphia. (F.B.I.) పచ్చజీనువాయి paṭsṭsajīnu-vāyi. n. The Red-headed Bunting, Emberiza luteola. (F.B.I.) పచ్చన or పచ్చదనము. paṭsṭsana. n. Greenness or yellowness. పచ్చని paṭsṭsani. adj. Green, yellow. పచ్చబంగారు yellow or pure gold. పచ్చగానున్న yellow or golden: prosperous, fortunate. పచ్చబ్రాలు paṭsṭsa-brālu. n. Yellow rice, i.e., rice coated with saffron and used to sprinkle over persons on auspicious occasions. పచ్చరెక్క poṭsṭsa-rekka. n. The Indian Bee-eater, Merops viridis. పెద్దపచ్చరెక్క or కొమ్మపచ్చరెక్క pedda-paṭsṭsa-rekka. n. The blue tailed Bee-eater. Meropus philippensis. (F.B.I.) పచ్చవలువదారి paṭsṭsa-valuva-dāri. n. Lit: One who wears a yellow cloth, i.e., Vishṇu, పీతాంబరుడు. పచ్చవారుపవు౛ోదు or పచ్చవార ్వపు౛ోడు paṭsṭsa-vāruvupuḍzōdu. n. Lit: One who rides on a green animal, i.e., the sun or Manmadha. హరిదశ్వుడు, శుకవాహుడు. పచ్చవిలుతుడు. పచ్చవిల్తుడు or పచ్చవిలుకాడు paṭsṭsa-vilutuḍu. n. Lit: The green bow-man, i.e., Manmadha, whose bow is green, being made of a sugar cane. పచ్చారె చెట్టు paṭsṭs-āre-cheṭṭu. [పచ్చ+ఆరెచెట్టు.] n. A large forest tree with a very fragrant flower, Banhenia spicata.

(p. 762) puñjamu punjamu. [Skt.] n. A heap, quantity, collection. రాశి, ప్రోగు. 'శోకపుంజముల్.' oceans of sorrows. M. IV. iv. 282. 'రత్నపుంజభరిత' full of gems. M. I. v. 36. పుంజి punji. n. Abundance, plenty, సమృద్ధి. adj. Plentiful, abundant, prosperous. ఆ గ్రామమును పుంజిచేసినాడు he promoted the welfare of the village. 'ఖంజరీటంబుల పుంజిదెలుప.' N. ix. 179. టీ బలమును కనుపరచగాను. వారిప్పుడు పుంజిగానున్నారు they are now in good circumstances. Also, a phrase for Four. రెమడుపు జీల రూపాయిలు eight rupees. పుంజికొను punji-konu. v. n. To be grouped thickly, to collect in a crowd, గుబురుకొను. పుంజీభవత్ punjī-bhavat. adj. Collecting, gathering. సోగయ్యే. 'పుంజీభవత్పాటలవ్రాతము.' A. ii. 65. టీ దట్టమైన కలిగొట్టు పుష్పములు. పుంజీభవించు punjī-bhavintsu. v. n. To become a heap, రాశిపడు, కుప్పయగు.

(p. 915) bruṅgu brungu. [Tel.] v. n. To be buried, పూడు. To hide, మరుగు. To sink; to die, perish. మణుగు, చచ్చు. హతమగు.' వెనురొంపిలోపల బ్రుంగిన ధేనువునెత్తుపోలికిన్.' M. IX. i. 172. 'పొగలకావిరి బ్రుంగెడు పుల్ గృహంబులు.' A. iv. 167. బ్రుంగుడు brunguḍu. adj. Hidden, concealed, మరిగిన. Sunk, మణిగిన. బ్రుంగుపడు or బ్రుంగుడుపడు brungu-paḍu. v. n. Concealment, బ్రుంగుడుపడుట. బ్రుంచు brunṭsu. v. a. To cause to sink, to submerge, బ్రుంగజేయు. బ్రుయ్యు bruyyu. v. n. To perish, నశించు.

(p. 1057) yōgamu yōgamu. [Skt.] n. Junction, meeting, union, కూడిక, కూర్పు. Fortune, అపూర్వవస్తుప్రాప్తి. సద్యోగము a lucky conjuncture, good fortune, or luck. దుర్యోగము misfortune. దైవయోగము Divine Providence. దైవయోగముతప్పి unhappily, unfortunately. Accession of property, or wealth. ద్రవ్యము. A prescription, a recipe. ఔషధము, మహాబిల్వాది యోగము a prescription including Bilva roots. Devotion, spiritual worship, the practice of abstraction and meditation. ధ్యానము. Of these forms of worship there are eight named (a) యమము restraining the passions, (b) నియమము providing a proper place, &c, for worship, (c) stopping the breath in three modes called రేచకము, పూరకము or కుంభకము, (d) ప్రత్యాహారము withdrawal from sense perception, (e) ధ్యానము meditation, (f) ధారణము repression of all physical movements, (g) మననము fixing the mind on the deity, and (h) సమాధి complete immersion in thought so that the thinker is dead to the world. ధ్యానయోగము an act of faith or meditation. మంత్రయోగము a magical operation. యోగపట్టె or యోగపట్టము yōga-paṭṭe. n. A magic girdle worn by ascetics. యోగదృష్టి the second sight, obtained by devotion, superhuman sagacity or perspicacity. యోగాభ్యాసము the keeping the body in a fixed posture for spiritual worship, the practice of abstract contemplation. యోగనిద్ర or జ్ఞాననిద్ర the divine sleep, or supernatural stupor which yōgis or saints strive to attain. యోగమాయ supernatural stupor. యోగవాగలు, యోగవాగములు or యోగవాగాలు yōga-vūgalu. n. Magical boots supposed to be worn by hermits. తలచినచోటికి తీసికొనిపోవు మంత్రిశక్తిగలపాదుకలు. 'యోగవాగలు మెట్టి యొకపాదమూది.' HD. ii. 135. 'యోగపట్టెలవారు నొప్పారు యోగ, వాగెలవారును.' L. xxiii. 31. యోగక్షేమము yōga-kshēmamu. n. Welfare, well-being, good circumstances. యోగి yōgi. n. A devotee, hermit; an ascetic in general, మని, యోగాభ్యాసము చేయువాడు. యోగిని yōgini. n. URK. ii. 262. ఈశబ్దము మూడు లింగములయందును వర్తించును this word is used in all genders, i.e., it is of the common gender. వర్తిష్ణువు vartishṇuvu. adj. Staying, abiding, being stationary, or fixed. ఉండేవాడు, నిలుకడగానుండువాడు, వర్తించువాడు.

T. iv. 193. సంలక్షణము classical, beautiful, handsome, లక్షణయుక్తమైన, అందమైన, సలక్షణమైనపడుచు a handsome girl. సలలితము beautiful, lovely. 'సలితకళానిధి.' T. Pref. 87. సవిస్తారముగా at full length, extensively, with all the particulars, completely, to the full, వివరముగా. సవినయముగా respectfully. సవినయుడై modestly. సహిరణ్యోదకపూర్వకముగా entirely; (lit. with money and water) - a phrase used in making gifts. సహృదయుడు a good hearted man. సహేతుకము reasonable, well grounded. కారణముతోగూడిన. సహేతుకముగా with the reason or the grounds, కారణసహితముగా. సాకూతము significant, అభిప్రాయసహితమైన. సాకూతస్మితము a wanton glance. A. iv. 41. సానుకూలము favour or kindness, success, ఉపకారము. ఆ పని వానికి సానుకూలమైన తరువాత when he succeeded in that affair. అది సానుకూలముకాక పోయినది it did not succeed. సానుకూలము favourable, kind, ఉపకారమైన. సానుకూలమైన మాట favourable word. సానుకూలముగా favourably, kindly, ఉపకారముగా. సాపత్న్యము the condition of a co-wife, the state of being or having a rival wife, సపత్నీభావము, సవతితనము. 'నీకనుపమసాపత్న్య సంపాదనంబు.' A. ii. 24. 'సాపత్న్యమునను గాకసైరింపగలదెయేకడపపత్నీ.' N. iii. 122. సాపత్న్యుడు an enemy, శత్రువు; the son of a co-wife. సుపత్నీపుత్రుడు. సాపరాధి a culprit, offender, sinner, he who is guilty, నేరస్థుడు. సావకాశము leisure, spare time, an interval, తీరిక, వ్యవధానము. సావధానముగా carefully, diligently, attentively, with due heed, జాగ్రతతో.
