(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 4) aṅke anke. [Tel.] n. A numerical figure అంకము. Opportunity, time. One pack, half a bullock load. A form of అణక. Bringing the yoke under the neck, as by a troublesome bullock. ఎద్దులు అంకె వేసికొన్నవి the bullocks turned restive, bringing the yoke under the neck. A command, authority, control, restraint, check. అంకెగొను v. i. To cover oneself with కప్పుకొను. అంకెచేయు v. i. To obstruct అడ్డగించు.అంకెకురాని,(భాస్క.2.) ungovernable. అంకెకురావు, అనగా అక్కరకురావు they will not be of any use. అంకెవేసికొను or అణకవేసికొను v. n. To be restive, as a bullock in the yoke. ఎద్దయకాడికెదురు తిరుగుట. నాడు తేపతేపకు అంకెవేసికొనును. he turns restive every now and then.

(p. 5) aṅgamu angamu. [Skt.] n. The body, a limb, member, part, division or branch. అంగవంచకము = ఉపాయము, సహాయము, దేశకాలవిభజనము, ఆపదకు ప్రతిక్రియ, కార్యసిద్ధి. అద్భుతాంగులు beings having wondrous forms. అష్టాంగములు = the eight forms or stages of meditation, i. e, యమము, నియమము, ప్రాణాయామము, ప్రత్యాహారము, ధ్యానము, ధారణ, మననము, సమాధి. చతురంగములు the four divisions of an army, i. e., రథములు, ఏనుగులు, గుర్రములు, బంటులు. పంచాంగము the Indian calendar giving particulars of each day, as తిథి, వారము, నక్షత్రము, యోగము, కరణము. రాజ్యాంగములు the various departments of Government. షడంగములు or వేదాంగములు the six sciences dependent on the Vedas. i. e., శిక్ష, కల్పము, వ్యాకరణము, నిరుక్తము, జ్యోతిషము, ఛందస్సు. సప్తాంగములు = the seven constituents of a Government. స్వామి, అమాత్యుడు, సుహృత్తు, కోశము, రాష్ట్రము, దుర్గము, బలము. సాష్టాంగ ప్రణామము prostrate homage, touching the ground with eight members of the body, i. e., eyes or chest and forehead, hands, knees and feet.

(p. 6) aṅgīkariñcu angīkarinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To consent, agree, admit, approve, receive, accept. అంగీకారము [Skt.] n. Consent, admission, acceptance, approval, approbation. అర్ధాంగీకారము half consent, doubtful admission; being half in earnest. అంగీకృతము [Skt.] a. Agreed on, accepted, admitted. ఒప్పుకోబడిన.

(p. 6) aṅgu angu. [Tel.] n. Beauty, agreeableness. అందము, ఒప్పిదము. అంగు adj. Agreeable, pleasant, handsome. అందమైన, ఒప్పిదమైన. అంగుగా angugā. adv. Agreeably. అంగుగానుండే clean limbed, well proportioned. Also helpful, useful, convenient.

(p. 7) añcu anṭsu. [Tel.] pres. part. of అను to say think. Saying, calling, considering, thinking.

(p. 7) añjanamu anjanamu. [Skt.] n. Lamp-black, collyrium, eyesalve, the magic ointment used for the purpose of discovering anything that is concealed. కాటుక. అంజనకాడు a conjurer, he who finds that which is concealed by putting this ointment on his hand or on his eyelashes. అంజనమువేసి చూచు to search for hidden things.

(p. 8) aṇṭu antu [Tel.] v. t. To touch. అంటించు to cause to touch. అంటినట్టుగా ఉండే close at hand. ఆ ఊరితో అంటినట్టుగా ఉండే ఒకపల్లె a hamlet close by the town. వానికి అదరంటినది fear seized him. తెల్ల అంటుతీగె convolvulus dentatus.

(p. 8) aṇṭu antu. [Tel.] n. Uncleanness, defilement by touch, impurity, such as is caused by the death of a relative, or by touching a lower caste man. Relationship. అంటుది an unclean woman. అంటుపడ్డాడు he was polluted, he became unclean. అంటుగా ఉండేయిల్లు. a house ceremonially polluted. మాకు రేపు అంటు (లేక, మైల) వదులును tomorrow we shall be free from [ceremonial] impurity. వానికనిమాకును మరేమి అంటుసంటు లేదు I have no connection with him. I have nothing to do with him.

(p. 9) aṇḍru anḍru. [Tel.] v. contraction of అందరు they will say.

(p. 10) antaraṅguḍu anta-ranguḍu. [Skt.] n. An intimate, a confidant. మిక్కిలి ఆప్తుడు.

(p. 11) antaramu antaramu. [Skt.] n. Interval, intermediate space. Period, term. Difference, disparity. Rank. వాని అంతరమేమి నీ అంతరమేమి consider his rank and yours. అంతరమునందు in the midst. కాలాంతరమందు at another time. గ్రంథాంతర మందు in another book. ప్రత్యంతరము another copy. పాఠాంతరము another reading. వనాంతరమునందు in the forest. స్థలాంతరమందు in another place; elsewhere. భాషాంతరము a translation into another language. అతని ముఖాంతరముగా through him. దేశాంతరముపోయినాడు he is gone to another country, he is in foreign part. మతాంతరము another opinion or religion. కర్మాంతరము the funeral ceremonies.

(p. 12) antarlāpi antarlāpi. [Skt.] n. A kind of puzzle, riddle or question which contains the solution or answer in itself. విడికథవలె అతికఠినమైన ప్రశ్నలు ఉత్తరములుగా మండేటిది. e.g. క' శ్రీకాంతునిదినమెన్నఁడు రాకొమరునికెద్ది ప్రియము రథతిథియెన్నం డేకొలదినన్నమరుంగును ఏకాదశినాఁడు సప్తమేడేగడియల్. ' శ్లో' కాశంభుకాంతాకిముచంద్రకాంతం, కాంతాముఖంకింకురుతేభుజంగః, కశ్శ్రీపతిఃకావిషమాసమస్యా, గౌరీముఖంచుంబతివాసుదేవః. '

(p. 12) antarvāhini antarvāhini. [Skt.] n. a concealed river, which runs under ground. నది యిక్కడ అంతర్వాహిని అయినది here the river is lost in the earth.
