(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 110) ācariñcu ācharinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To practise, to observe, to be used to, to do habitually. To put in practice (the precepts of religion), to perform (bathing, &c.) To celebrate (a religious festival.) ఆచరణము ācharaṇamu. n. Doing, performing. ఆచారము, నడత. ఆచారము ācharamu. n. Practice, custom. Rule, fashion, mode, a course of conduct, institute or observance, Religious observance. మతాచారముచొప్పున according to the principles of the creed. ఆచారి āchari. n. A caste title borne by the Vaishnavite Brahmins, the men of the blacksmith and goldsmith castes. సదాచారి a man of good principles. ఆచార్యత్వము āchāryatvamu. n. The office of a priest. ఆచార్యుడు āchāryuḍu. n. A teacher. A priest: a spiritual guide or preceptor: one who invests the student with the sacrificial thread and instructs him in the mysteries of the religion.

(p. 76) āyanamu ayanamu. [Skt.] n. Road, path. Half a year. Motion, course. మార్గము, అర్ధవత్సరము, సూర్యుని దక్షిణోత్తరగతి. ఉత్తరాయనము or ఉత్తరాయణము the sun's course for six months in the northern constellations of the zodiac. దక్షిణాయనము the sun's course for six months in the southern constellations of the zodiac. అయనకాలము the interval between the equinoxes. ఆయన భాగము the arc between the vernal equinoctial point and the beginning of the fixed zodiac or first point in Aries. ఆయన వలనము deviation of the ecliptic. అయనవృత్తము the ecliptic.

(p. 128) āśrayamu āṣrayamu. [Skt.] n. Support, asylum. refuge, retreat, place of safety, protection, patronage, countenance. అండ, బలవంతు నాశ్రయించుట ఇల్లు. ఆశ్రయాసుడు āṣray-āṣuḍu. n. The god of fire, because he eats or destroys one's abode. ఆశ్రయించు āṣray-inṭsu. n. To take refuge, to depend upon or have recourse to, to court, to follow. అనుసరించు, అండగొను. ఈ ప్రతిభేదమును ఆశ్రయించినాడు he adopted this reading. ఆశ్రితము āṣritamu. adj. Dependent on. ఆశ్రితుడు āṣrituḍu. n. One who is looked up to for help. ఆశ్రయింపబడినవాడు.

(p. 154) uttaramu uttaramu. [Skt.] adj. Secondary subsequent, following after. మీదిది. ఉత్తరభాగము the sequel or supplement. ఉత్తర రామాయణము the sequel to the Rāmāyaṇa. ఉత్తరసాధనము a further means. ఉత్తరసాక్షి a subscribing witness. సాక్షులగుటకు సాక్షి. ఉత్తర పక్షము the party who support the affirmative. Also, the affirmative proposition సిద్ధాంతము, the party in opposition being called ప్రతిపక్షము; the hypothesis or affirmative proposition, the second part or deduction from an argument. ఉత్తరార్థము the second half of an argument being the demonstration or exemplification of the పూర్వార్ధము or assertion first made. ఉత్తరోత్తర adv. Ever after, at any future time, hereafter, in course of time, gradually.

(p. 181) ekku ekku. [Tel.] v. a. & n. To rise, increase, swell. To appear (by its effects as wine, water, poison, or medicine.) To affect the mind. To prevail as a report; to come to notice వాని తలకు మదము ఎక్కినది he is beside himself with pride or lust. వానికి మత్తెక్కినది he is intoxicated. వడ్డియెక్కినది interest has accrued. ఎక్కినవడ్డి the interest that accrued. వాని దుష్టగుణములు నీకు ఎక్కినవి you have caught his bad habits, or, followed his example. వార్తకెక్కు to become the theme or topic of discourse. వన్నెకెక్కినాడు he became celebrated, rose to distinction. వాసికెక్కిన celebrated, honoured. ఎన్నికకెక్కినాడు one who has risen to reputation. పది గంటలపొద్దు ఎక్కిన వేళ when it was ten o'clock, lit. when the sun has mounted (to) ten hours. ఆ పనికి ఎవరును ఎక్కలేదు no one came forward, or volunteered for the business. అతని మాట యెక్కదు his word will not do, or avail. తలకు నీళ్లెక్కి ౛లుబుగానున్నది the water has got into the head and I have a cold. To mount on, get upon. మంచమెక్కు to take to one's bed. ఎక్కుకొను ekku-konu. v. a. To mount on ఆరోహించు.

(p. 254) karma or కర్మము karma. [Skt. √ kri = to do.] n. An act or deed: action in general. పని. Religious action, such as sacrifice; ablution. Actions, conduct, a course of procedure. Destiny; fate, that is, the allotment, to be enjoyed or suffered in the present life, of the fruit of the good and evil actions performed in former lives. Moral duty; obligation imposed by peculiarities of tribe, occupation, &c. Funeral rites. The object of a verb in Grammar. వాని కర్మము ఎవ్వరు చేసినారు who performed his funeral rites? An art, as శిల్పకర్మము the art of statuary. Doing: ఇది నీకర్మమే this is all your doing, it is your own fault. Ill hap, misfortune, hard lot: affliction. అయ్యో కర్మమా O dear! oh what a pity! కర్మము or పాపకర్మము a sinful deed. కర్మజీవి See కర్మఠుడు. కర్మఠము karmaṭhamu. [Skt.] n. Ceremonial precision. కర్మఠుడు karmaṭhuḍu. n. A formalist, a ritualist: one who is earnest in the performance of the rites of religion. కార్యమును చివరవరకు సాధించేవాడు. కర్మణిక్రియ karmaṇi-kriya. n. A transitive verb. అకర్మక్రియ an intransitive verb. కర్మరంగము karma-rangamu. n. The five sided sour green plum called Averrhoa Carambola, or అంబాణవుకాయ. కర్మసాక్షి karma-sākshi. n. A witness of all our acts, viz., the sun. కర్మాంతరము karmāntaramu n. Funeral rites, obsequies.

(p. 272) kāmamu kāmamu. [Skt.] n. Love, lust. Wish, desire, concupiscence. ఇచ్ఛ. కామకేళి sexual intercourse. కామనుడు kāmanuḍu. n. A lustful man. కామచారి kāma-chāri. adj. Sensual, selfish; following one's own pleasure. కామగము kāmagamu. adj. Wish-guided; going at will as an enchanted car. తలచినచోటికి పోయే. కామరూపి. kāma-rūpi. adj. Protean, plastic, able to assume any shape. The heroes Sugriva and Hanuman and all the Rakshasas were kāmarūpis, being able to assume various shapes at will. కామాంకుశము kām-ānkuṣamu. n. A stimulant or aphrodisiac. A finger nail గోరు కామాధమకారము kām-āndhakāramu. n. Blindness of lust. కామాతరుడు kām-āturuḍu. A lustful man. కామానలము kām-ānalamu. n. The fire of love.

(p. 285) kīṭu kīṭu. [Tel.] n. A tire, a course, a layer, stratum or range. A line, mark, stroke. గోడ ఒకకేటు పెట్టినాడు he built one layer of the wall.

(p. 299) kulya kulya. [Skt.] n. A canal, a rivulet. కాలువ. A water course. నీళ్లు పోయేక్రోవి.

(p. 333) kramamu kramamu. [Skt.] n. A series, an order, a line. A mode, a way, a course, a plan, a rule. Regularity, arrangement. ఈ క్రమమున thus, in this order. క్రమ క్రమముగా adv. One after another, in order, by degrees, day by day. క్రమశః kramaṣah. adv. Gradually, in order. క్రమస్థుడు krama-sthuḍu. n. A exact, punctilious or precise man. క్రమాలంకారము kramā-lankāramu. n. Poetical description in natural order. క్రమించు kraminṭsu. v. n. To clapse, pass by, as time: to depart, or pass away. అతిక్రమించు. To occupy or spread over or extend to ఆక్రమించు. క్రమేణ kramēṇa. adv. Successively, in due succession.

(p. 348) gaṇḍu ganḍu. [Tel.] n. Bravery. పౌరుషము. strength బలము. adj. Brave, heroic, great, large, stout. Male. మగ. గండుమూతి a grim face. గండీగ a large fly. గండుచీమ the large black ant. గండుచేప the carp which is proverbial for vigour and activity. గండుమీనుల వంటి వీక్షణములు eyes that glance bright like dolphins గండుపిల్లి a tom cat. పిల్లికూనగండాయెను the young kitten turned into a tom cat. గండు among tradesmen is a cant word for వరహా a pagoda. Thus in arithmetic గ1 is one pagoda; గగ one thousand pagodas. గండడగు ganḍaḍagu. [గండు+అడగు.] v. n. To lose heart or courage పరాక్రమహీనుడగు. (హరి. ఉ. ii.) To die చచ్చు. (Vasu. iv.) గండాడు ganḍāḍu. [గండు+ఆడు.] v. n. To have sexual intercourse. రమించు. గండుకరణము ganḍ-karaṇamu. n. The bird called the Green Barbet. Thereiceryx Zeylonicus (F.B.I.) (Jerdon's Catal. No. 217.) గండుడు ganḍuḍu. [Skt.] n. A courageous man, a hero. శూరుడు.

(p. 1402) geḍḍa geḍḍa. [Tel.] n. A water course.

(p. 395) gōṣṭhi gōshṭi. [Skt.] n. An assembly, or meeting for conversation, a secret assembly of the initiated. సభ. A discourse, conversation or talk సల్లాసము.

(p. 398) grāmamu grāmamu. [Skt.] n. A village. ఊరు. A scale in music. షడ్జాదిస్వరము. గ్రామత్రయము the three tones, treble, tenor and base. A crowd or multitude సమూహము. as గుణగ్రామము or శబ్దగ్రామము. గ్రామకార్యము grāma-kāryamu. n. Village affairs: worldly matters. గ్రామకంఠము grāma-kanṭhamu. n. The glebe, or pasture land appertaining to a village. గ్రామణి grāmaṇi. n. A chief: a head man. గ్రామాధిపతి. గ్రామణి adj. Chief, head, leading. ముఖ్యుడు నరగ్రామణి, the noblest of men. దుర్గ్రామణి a wicked ruler. గ్రామణ్యము grāmanyamu. n. The rule or headship of a town. Imperiousness, violence, outrage. గ్రామణ్యముగా scoffingly. గ్రామదేవత grāma-dēvata. n. A village god or goddess. These are the original Dravidian deities. Among them the male deities are chiefly these: పోతురాజు, కాట్రేడు, అంకాళు, గంగయ, చెన్నడు and మైలారు. The principal village goddesses are పెద్దమ్మ, కాట్రేణి, అంకాళమ్మ, ఎక్కళమ్మ, ఎల్లమ్మ, మల్లమ్మ, మామిళ్లమ్మ, మైసమ్మ or మైసూరమ్మ, (i. e. మహిషీ.) మారియమ్మ, మారెమ్మ (who probably is meant for 'Maria') యాగాతమ్మ (that is, Saint Agatha,) and సుంకలమ్మ or సుంకెళమ్మ, of whom one inflicts the cholera, another the small pox (see అమ్మవారు) another murrain, another blight. None have any beneficent powers, and they are worshipped to avert their displeasure. గ్రామసింహము grāma-simhamu. n. The lion of the village, i.e., a dog. గ్రామస్థుడు grāma-sthuḍu. n. A villager. స్వగ్రామస్థుడు a fellow citizen or neighbour. గ్రామాంతము grām-āntamu. n. The outlying portion of a village, i.e. the Panchama quarter. మాలపల్లె. గ్రామాదులు grām-ādulu. n. Villages. Lit. Villages, &c. గ్రామ్యము grāmyamu. adj. Village-born; produced in or relating to a village. Vulgar, rude, rustic. Common, colloquial, unclassical, inelegant: The opposite of శాస్త్రీయము. In Grammar the term is applied to conversational forms as వస్తాడు, తెస్తాడు, like they're, I'm, you're, he's, in English, which are supposed to be in admissible in literature, though they occur in all even the best poets. గ్రామ్యధర్మము grāmya-dharmamu. n. Sexual intercourse. సంభోగము. Lit. what is usual or the fashion, or way of the world.
