(p. 27) agrahāramu agra-hāramu. [Skt.] n. A street or village inhabited by brahmins. A village of which the old and hereditary cultivators are brahmins. A village granted to brahmins by government for charitable or religious purposes; either rent free, or at a favourable assessment. The conditions on which these villages are held are specified thus, సర్వాగ్రహారము a village free from all tax. శ్రోత్రియాగ్రహారము a village granted at a certain fixed assessment. జోడి అగ్రహారము, or బిల్మకా అగ్రగారము or, కట్టుబడి అగ్రహారము a village granted at a rent which fluctuates with the produce. అగ్రహారికుడు a brahmin belonging to such a village. అగ్రహారమనుభవించేవాడు he who enjoys a village free from tax.

(p. 77) araka araka. [Tel.] n. A plough with bullocks complete. సర్వావయవములుగల నాగటికి ఎడ్లను పూనినది. అరకలుకట్టు to harness a team. అరకలువిప్పు to unyoke the cattle. ఒక యెద్దు చనిపోయినది, అరకసాగక తొందరగానున్నది I cannot carry on my ploughing well as one of my bullocks is dead. అరకట్టరక a plough with a pair of bullocks. విడిచికట్టరక a plough with a change of bullocks. అరకాడు ara-kāḍu. (from అరక+కాడు) n. A cultivator, a ryot.

(p. 86) alagā alagā. [H.] adj. Separate, unconnected. ప్రత్యేకమైన, అలగాభూమి pasture-land, waste land kept for grazing. అలగా పుల్లరి grazing tax levied on cattle not belonging to the village. అలగా అసామి a private individual, one not concerned, not a regular cultivator.

(p. 239) kadīmu kadīmu. [H.] n. An old servant, an old inhabitant. పారకాపు. కదీములు the old and hereditary cultivators of a village మిరాశికాపులు.

(p. 255) karṣakuḍu karshakuḍu. [Skt. కృషి.] n. A cultivator, a farmer.

(p. 271) kāpu . kāpu. [Tel. from కాచు.] కాచు. n. Keeping, attendance. Protection, guard. రక్షణము. Heat, warmth (This is from కాగు.) Productiveness కాయలుకాచుట. The crop or fruit. కాపుడిగినచెట్టు a tree that is past bearing. కండ్లకు రెప్పలు కాపుగానున్నవి the eyelids are a protection to the eyes. కాపు ఉంచు to place a guard. కాపు or కాపువాడు n. A tenant. A farmer, a cultivator. A rustic or countryman. A person, an individual, a dweller. మంచు కొండకాపు or హిమాచలవాసి. Siva రుద్రుడు. సొమ్ముకాపు a holder or owner of property. పాలికాపు a member or shareholder. మహనాటికాపులు leaguesmen, members of the (Mahanādu) community. కాపుగడ or కాపుడు kāpugaḍa. n. Protection. కాచుట, రక్షించుట. కాప kāpa. adj. Appertaining to the farmer caste. కాపమాటలు rustic language. The vocative of కాపు a farmer. ఓకాప, నీవెట్లొకో వచ్చితి విటకు O farmer, how did you come here? B.D. iv. 1963. కావత. kāpata. n. A country girl, a rustic. The female of కాపు. కాపుతనము kāpu-tanamu. n. The rustic condition, the state of farmers. ఈ కాపుతనమును విడిచిపెట్టడము మేలు it would be better to give up the farming business. కాపుది A woman of the farming caste, a female rustic.

(p. 307) kṛṣi kṛishi. [Skt.] n. Cultivation, husbandry, agriculture, ploughing, cultivating the soil. సేద్యము. Labour, exertion ప్రయాసము, శ్రమ. కృషికుడు or కృషీవలుడు kṛiṣhī-kuḍu. n. A cultivator, a husbandman. సేద్యకాడు.

(p. 332) kaulu or కవులు kaulu. [H.] n. A writing of assurance, agreement or engagement granted to the cultivator of the soil. A safe guard or warrant to pass (as granted to an enemy.)

(p. 341) kṣētramu kshētramu. [Skt.] n. A field. పంటభూమి. A place, a spot స్థలము. The body శరీరము. A wife భార్య. A sacred spot, a place of pilgrimage పుణ్యభూమి. Starvation పస్తు. (this meaning is peculiar to Telugu.) నిన్న కటికిక్షేత్రముగానుండినాడు he was starving all yesterday. క్షేత్రములు చేయు to starve. క్షేత్రగణితము kshētragaṇamu. n. Mensuration. క్షేత్రజ్ఞుడు kshētragnyuḍu. n. The soul. ఆత్మ, జీవము. A husbandman. కాపువాడు. A. ii. 100. క్షేత్రపాలుడు kshētra-pāluḍu. n. An inferior manifestation or terrific form of Siva. భైరవుడు. 'క్షేత్రపాలున కుదికినచీరలారు చాకిరేవులగములయ్యెసకల దిశలు.' A. ii. 55. క్షేత్రాజీవుడు a cultivator దున్ను కొని బ్రతుకువాడు.

(p. 696) paṭṭā, paṭā or పట్ట paṭṭā. [Tel.] n. The inner bark of a tree. Sackcloth. A sort of girdle cloth. Also, a lease; a grant or lease specifying the land occupied by a cultivator and the assessment due on it. రాజు రయితులకిచ్చే కవులు. పట్టాదారుడు a pattadar, a leaseholder. బిల్మక్తాపట్టా a lease for a gross aggregate rent, one in which the land tax and all other cesses are consolidated. See పట్ట, and పట్టము.

(p. 741) pāyakaṭṭu paya-kaṭṭu. [H.] n. A tract of land newly reclaimed from a jungle. A group of small villages that are connected with another important village. పాయకారీ paya-kārī. n. A temporary or non-resident cultivator, a cultivator without hereditary interest in the soil. A sub-renter or under tenant, a tenant at will. A man who cultivates land lying in another village. పరస్థలపురయితు, భాగ ప్రోకారము భూస్వాతంత్య్రములేని రయితు.

(p. 747) pālēru pālēru. [Tel. పాలు+ఏరు.] n. An under tenant, who holds land in fee. An under farmer, a sub-renter, పాయకారీ ధణీకిందనుండి దున్ని ఫలపరుచువాడు. A hired cultivator or labourer. పాలేరుతనము pālēru-tanamu. n. The state of being an under tenant. Vassalage.

(p. 813) polamu polamu. [Tel.] n. A field, corn land. చేను, పైరుపెట్టునేల. A rice field, వరిపైరుపెట్టునేల. Uncultivated land on which cattle graze, పసులుమేయు భూమి. A forest, అడవి. A place, land, ground, ప్రదేశము. ఊరిపొలము the land attached to a village. వెలిపొలము the outlying fields belonging to a village. A village, ఊరు. A trace, ౛ాడ. Manner, విధము. పొలపు కూరలు field herbs, or ordinary herbs, as చెంచలి, చిట్లింత, పేరింత, పొన్నగంటి, మొదలైనవి. (These weeds infest fields sown with జొన్నలు, &c.) 'అప్పొలమువరాహపోతములు భూవర తొండములేని యేనుగుల్.' Swa. iv. 18. టీ అప్పొలము వరహపోతములు, అక్కడి అడవిపందిగున్నలు. 'గీ ఈ పొలములగుమహాధిక వ్రతములు దేహబాధకములు.' M. XII. iv. 361. ఈ పొలములగు, ఈ విధములైన పొలముపాటు polamu-pāṭu. n. Husbandry, పైరుపెట్టుట, కృషి, వ్యవసాయము. పొలకట్టు pola-kaṭṭu. ైోౌ n. A ploughed field. Kasi Yatra. 55. పొలమరి polam-ari. n. A cultivator. పొలముకాపు. 'పొలమరులందుకూతలిడ భూసురులన్నదివార్చివార్చి.' A. iii. 28. టీ పొలమరులు, పొలముచేయువారు. పొలవరి or పొలమరి polapari. (పొలము+అరి.) n. One who knows the signs, ౛ాడతెలిసినవాడు.

(p. 1066) rayitu , రయతు, రహితు or రైతు rayitu. [H.] n. A ryot. కాపు. రయితాంగము or రహితాంగము the agricultural body, the peasantry, కాపులు. రయితువారి rayituvāri. n. The Ryotwary system, i.e., the system under which each cultivator holds direct from Government. An individual farmer's settlement of rent, or of the Government demands. రయితువారిలెక్క an account showing the holding, &c., of each cultivator.

(p. 1155) vārakamu vārakamu. [Tel.] n. A stipend: pay given in advance: money advanced to cultivators to be received again without interest when the crop is reaped. సాగుబడి కాలములో ఇచ్చి ఫలకాలములో వడ్డి లేకుండ మళ్లీ రాబట్టుకొనురూకలు, తకావి. 'వలసి నజీతంబువారకంబులను కొలదిమీరిగనిచ్చి కూడు కనుండు.' L. iv. 113.
