Red, scarlet, crimson. ఎర్రనివాండ్రు people of fair complexion. కన్నులెర్రచేసి పలికినాడు he spoke with eyes inflamed with fury. ఎర్రనియేగాని నావద్ద లేదు I have not even a copper with me. ఎర్రకాళ్లజిట్ట erra-kaḷḷajiṭṭa. n. A small bird, Pyctorhis sinesis, the Yellow-eyed babbler (F.B.I.) ఎర్రకాళ్ల కొంగ erra-kāḷḷa-konga. n. The painted stork or pelican, ibis, Pseudotontalus leucocephalus (F.B.I.) ఎర్రకోడి erra-kōḍi. The common spurfowl. The painted sort is చిమటకోడి. Jerdon. No. 74. ఎర్రగడ్డ erra-gaḍḍa. An onion, the red garlic. ఎర్రగొల్లలు erra-gollalu. The name of a certain tribe. ఎర్రగోగిల erra-gōgila. The name of one of the village goddesses, supposed to cure diseases among cattle. ఎర్రబారు or ఎర్రవాడు erra-bāru. v. i. To become red. ఎర్రనగు. ఎర్రమన్ను erra-mannu. n. A kind of fairy, described as a eunuch, employed in the Hindu Olympus as a singer, and an attendant on the goddesses; or represented as a man with a bird's head: or as having a form uniting that of a man, a deer and a bird. నరమృగపక్షశరీరేలోకభేదే. మనుష్య ముఖమును, పక్షి శరీరమును గలవాడు. లేక, అశ్వముఖమును నరశరీరమును గలవాడు.

(p. 346) gaṇṭa ganṭa. [Tel.] n. A bell, a gong. An hour. గంటలగడ a staff hung with bells. used in bands or processions. గంటలమ్మ ganṭal-amma. n. Name of one of the village goddesses. గంటవేట ganṭa-vēṭa. n. Hunting in which lights and low bells are used. Bat-fowling. గంటసాల ganṭa-sāla. n. A tower in which bells are hung. A belfry.

(p. 398) grāmamu grāmamu. [Skt.] n. A village. ఊరు. A scale in music. షడ్జాదిస్వరము. గ్రామత్రయము the three tones, treble, tenor and base. A crowd or multitude సమూహము. as గుణగ్రామము or శబ్దగ్రామము. గ్రామకార్యము grāma-kāryamu. n. Village affairs: worldly matters. గ్రామకంఠము grāma-kanṭhamu. n. The glebe, or pasture land appertaining to a village. గ్రామణి grāmaṇi. n. A chief: a head man. గ్రామాధిపతి. గ్రామణి adj. Chief, head, leading. ముఖ్యుడు నరగ్రామణి, the noblest of men. దుర్గ్రామణి a wicked ruler. గ్రామణ్యము grāmanyamu. n. The rule or headship of a town. Imperiousness, violence, outrage. గ్రామణ్యముగా scoffingly. గ్రామదేవత grāma-dēvata. n. A village god or goddess. These are the original Dravidian deities. Among them the male deities are chiefly these: పోతురాజు, కాట్రేడు, అంకాళు, గంగయ, చెన్నడు and మైలారు. The principal village goddesses are పెద్దమ్మ, కాట్రేణి, అంకాళమ్మ, ఎక్కళమ్మ, ఎల్లమ్మ, మల్లమ్మ, మామిళ్లమ్మ, మైసమ్మ or మైసూరమ్మ, (i. e. మహిషీ.) మారియమ్మ, మారెమ్మ (who probably is meant for 'Maria') యాగాతమ్మ (that is, Saint Agatha,) and సుంకలమ్మ or సుంకెళమ్మ, of whom one inflicts the cholera, another the small pox (see అమ్మవారు) another murrain, another blight. None have any beneficent powers, and they are worshipped to avert their displeasure. గ్రామసింహము grāma-simhamu. n. The lion of the village, i.e., a dog. గ్రామస్థుడు grāma-sthuḍu. n. A villager. స్వగ్రామస్థుడు a fellow citizen or neighbour. గ్రామాంతము grām-āntamu. n. The outlying portion of a village, i.e. the Panchama quarter. మాలపల్లె. గ్రామాదులు grām-ādulu. n. Villages. Lit. Villages, &c. గ్రామ్యము grāmyamu. adj. Village-born; produced in or relating to a village. Vulgar, rude, rustic. Common, colloquial, unclassical, inelegant: The opposite of శాస్త్రీయము. In Grammar the term is applied to conversational forms as వస్తాడు, తెస్తాడు, like they're, I'm, you're, he's, in English, which are supposed to be in admissible in literature, though they occur in all even the best poets. గ్రామ్యధర్మము grāmya-dharmamu. n. Sexual intercourse. సంభోగము. Lit. what is usual or the fashion, or way of the world.

(p. 408) cāmuṇḍa or చాముండిక chāmunḍa. [Skt.] n. The name of Durga or one of her attendant goddesses.

(p. 819) pōtu pōtu. [Tel.] n. The male of certain birds, animals and plants, పశు పక్షులలోమగది. ఆబోతు an ox, వృషభము. ఎనుబోతు a male buffalo. మేకపోతు a he-goat, a ram. నక్కపోతు a male fox. గొడ్డుపోతు a barren woman. పోతుటీగ a male fly. పోతుటేనుగు a male elephant. పోతుకరుడు the bigger surf, పెద్దఅల. పోతుతాడు the male palm tree. పోతురౌతు, an epithet of Yama, the god of Death, యముడు. పోతుపిల్ల, a male young one. పశుజాతిలో మగపిల్ల. పోతుపిల్లి a tom cat. పోతు sometimes means one who is addicted to, as తాగుబోతు a drunkard. తిండిబోతు a glutton. తూగుపోతు a sluggard వదురుబోతు a chatter box. పోతుపిచ్చిక or పెద్దపిచ్చిక pōtu-pichchika. n. The Ashy-crowned Finch Lark. Pyrrhulauda grisca. (F.B.I.) పోతురాజు or పోతరాజు pōtu-rāḍsu. n. The name of a rustic god, like Pan, worshipped throughout the Telugu, Canarese and Mahratta countries. He represents the male principle associated with the village goddesses Gangamma, Peddamma, &c. A proverb says పాడుఊరికి మంచపుకోడుపోతురాజు in a ruined village the leg of a cot is a god. cf., 'a Triton of the minnows' (Shakespeare.) బమ్మెరపోతరాజు the name of a certain poet. పోతులరాజు pōtula-rāḍzu. n. A name given to a large hound.
