(p. 173) ussu ussu. [Tel.] n. Ah! alas! 'ఉస్సను నూర్చుహాయనున్.' P. i. 246. ఉస్సని కూర్చున్నాడు he sighed and sat down. ఉస్సురను ussur-anu. v. n. To sigh. (from ఉస్సు alas! and అను to say; the R being inserted to save elision.) మిక్కిలి విసుకు. ఉస్సురనిపించు ussur-anipinṭsu. (causal of ఉస్సురను.) v. a. To grieve, to make one sigh.

(p. 487) ṭ ṭa. The name of a letter. In composition this is sometimes changed into డ thus చేటుపాటు chēṭu-pāṭu. becomes ఛేడ్పాటు chēḍ-pāṭu. Colloquially it changes into ష. Thus అటువంటి, అఘవంటి as, in English, intention is pronounced intenshun. This letter ట is sometimes inserted to prevent elision. ఉప్పు+ఏరు (uppu-ēru) becomes ఉప్పుటేరు (uppu-ṭē-ru.) a salt river. పెంకు+ఇల్లు, పెండుటిల్లు. This may happen even where the first word is Sanskrit, thus: మదపుటేనుగు.

(p. 600) duḥ duh. [Skt.] A negative prefix. Bad, evil, wicked. చెడు, చెడ్డ. In compounds it changes into దుశ్ or దుస్ according to the rules of Sandhi. Such compounds as usually occur in Telugu literature are here brought together and explained. దురంతము dur-antamu. adj. (p. 931) m ma. The letter M. It stands, like the English letter M for the hieroglyphie sign representing the horns of an owl. (See Taylor.) This letter when an initial is sometimes dropped in poetry. Thus ఏము is written for మేము Sometimes it is inserted to prevent elision as in ఉస్సుమనుచు, నిగనిగమనును.

(p. 948) madamu madamu. [Skt.] n. Fat, కొవ్వు. Pride, arrogance, lust, frenzy, madness. గర్వము. Musk, కస్తూరి. మదాంధతి the blindness of pride, haughtiness. విద్యామదము the pride of learning. ధనమదము the pride of wealth. ధనదాంధుడు he who is blinded by riches. కులమదము the pride of caste or birth. ఉద్యోగమదము the pride of office. రూపమదము the pride of beauty. యౌవన మదము the pride of youth. అన్నమదము the pride of plenty. స్త్రీమదము the pride of passion. మదాలస indolent, heavy as with tipsiness or lust. అతని మదమణిగినది his lustful arrogance has gone, he has sown his wild oats. adj. Proud. మదగజము an elephant in rut. 'మదవైరిద్విపసింహముర్తి.' G. viii. 4. మదించు madinṭsu. v. n. To become fat, proud, or arrogant, to be in rut. కొవ్వు, అహంకరించు, మత్తిలు. మదపుటేనుడు madapu-ṭ-ēnugu. n. An elephant in rut. (The ట is inserted to prevent elision.) మదమడచు madam-aḍaṭsu. v. n. To put down pride, to kill. చంపు. మడవతి madavati. n. A wanton woman. మదావళము, మదహస్తి, మదహత్తి or మదకలము madāvaḷamu. n. An elephant in its prime.

(p. 1059) r ra. [Tel.] n. The letter R, called రేఫ repha, or రకారము ra-kāramu. When it is a subjunct letter, it is written underneath and shaped, thus, ్ర or L, and is called krāvaṭi క్రావడి or క్రారవడి krāravaṭi; thus, కర్ర karra, వక రము rakramu. In many Telugu words this r is used optionally after the initial, as in మాను, పక్క, కింద, తోవ, సుక్కు which are, in bookish Telugu, written మ్రాను ప్రక్క.క్రింద. త్రోవ. స్రుక్కు respectively. The letter ర is sometimes inserted to prevent elision, as పొదరిల్లు, గంగిరెద్దు, బొమ్మరిల్లు, ఉస్సురనుచు. ర in prosody, stands, for రగణము, a foot composed of a short between two long syllables.

(p. 1089) rō rō. (affix) A vocative particle, as అక్కరో O sister. అన్నరో Oh brother. This is for the vocative sign ఓ with R inserted to save elision. See రొ.

(p. 1105) luptamu luptamu. [Skt. connected with the root of లోపము.] adj. Disappearing. Cut off, rejected, as a vowel by elision. లోపించినది.

(p. 1122) vaccu vaṭsṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To come, arrive. To happen, occur, take place. చేరు, సంభవించు, కూడు, ప్రాప్తమగు. రేపువత్తురు they will come tomorrow. నిన్నవస్తిమి we arrived yesterday. నాతో కూడావచ్చినాడు he accompanied me. మనసువచ్చినన్నికాగితాలు పుచ్చుకొన్నాడు he took as many papers as he pleased. నీ మనసువచ్చినట్టు చెయ్యి do as you please. This verb is used (like Come in all languages), in numerous senses. వచ్చేతేప next time. వచ్చేనెలలో in the next month. వచ్చేకడగండ్లు రాకమానవు the evil that must happen will happen. As an auxiliary, it is added to the present participle of any verb to denote long habit or continuance, as చదువుచువచ్చినాడు he continued to read. అట్లుచేయుచు వచ్చినాడు I have been doing so all along. అక్కడికి పోవుచువచ్చినాడు he used to go there. It is also joined to the past participle of the verb వలయు. ఇట్లు చేయవలసి వచ్చినది it became necessary to do so. It is added to the infinitive in A. ఇది మాకు తెలియవచ్చినది it came to our knowledge. నాకు బుద్ధిచెప్పివచ్చినాడు he went so far as to advise me. వచ్చు or వచ్చును (the third person singular aorist of వచ్చు) is used with the infinitive as an auxiliary signifying permission, possibility or probability. నీవు అక్కడికి పోవచ్చును you may go there. మేము రావచ్చునా? may we come? అట్లు కావచ్చును it may be so perhaps. రాదు (the neg. aor. 3rd person singular) means must not or cannot. నీవు అక్కడికి పోరాదు you must not go there. నేను చేయరాదు I cannot do it. అట్లా చెప్పరాదా can you not say so? Added to a dative, వచ్చు is used to mean To be got, gained, acquired, to be available. ఆ భాష వానికి వచ్చినది he has learned the language, he knows that tongue. ఈ బియ్యము నెల దినాలకు వచ్చినవి this rice lasted for one month. వానికేమివచ్చినది what happened to him? ఇయ్య మనసువచ్చినది he was inclined to give it. వానికి బుద్ధివచ్చినది he has learnt sense. వానికి మీసాలువచ్చినవి his whiskers have grown. దానికి మళ్లీ కండ్లు వచ్చినవి she has recovered her sight. ఆ బిడ్డకు పళ్లు వచ్చినవి the child has cut its teeth. ఇక్కడ సకారమునకు లోపము వచ్చినది there is an elision of the letter S. వానికి అన్నానికే లోపము వచ్చినది he is even in want of food. వానికి ఒంటికివచ్చినది he fell sick. ఇది పనికివచ్చును this will do, this will be useful. ప్రాణమునకు వచ్చే perilous, hazardous. ఇది నీ ప్రాణమునకు వచ్చును this will put your life in peril. నోటికివచ్చినట్టు వానికి తిట్టినాడు he gave them all the abuse he could think of. అతని పేరు నాకు రాలేదు I cannot recollect his name. ఆ పాఠము వానికి రాలేదు he does not know the lesson. వచ్చుబడి vaṭsṭsubaḍi. n. Income. ఆయతి. రాబడి. వానికి నిండా వచ్చుబడియున్నది he has a large income. వచురాములు vatstsu-rāmulu. (వచ్చుట+రామి.) n. Coming and not coming. వచ్చుటయును రామియును.

(p. 1333) siddhamu siddhamu. [Skt.] adj. Ready, prepared, అయితమైన. Accomplished, completed, fulfilled, ఈడేరిన. Cooked, boiled, వండబడిన. Constant, eternal, ఎడతెగని, నిత్యమైన. Real, right, true, certain, న్యాయమైన, రూఢమైన, యథార్థమైన, ప్రసిద్ధమైన. పడడమునకు సిద్ధమైయుండినందున as it was ready to fall. n. Readiness, accomplishment.
