(p. 222) ?E0 The Sunna, anuswaram, or circle used for ణ, న, మ: as అండము aṇḍamu, an egg: సంతానము santānamu. Offspring: కంబు kambu, a shell. The half nasal 'ఁ' or semi circle is not used in modern Telugu, though some Pundits have made many efforts to introduce it.

(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 1396) akṣaya a-kshaya. [Skt.] n. The name of a Telugu year.

(p. 27) acca aṭṭsa [Tel.] adj. Pure, real, unmixed. అచ్చ తెనుగు Telugu without foreign words. అచ్చగుండ్ల పేరు a necklace of pure beads.

(p. 38) aḍḍasārelu or అడ్డసాళ్లు aḍḍa-sārelu. [Tel.] n. plu. Dice. సాగటాల పాచికలు. 'ఇపుడిచట పాసగునేయవి, మత్సాయక ములడ్డసాళ్లే' M. VII. i. 337. 'శకునిచేతి యడ్డసారెలు గావు గాండీ విముక్త బహుపటిష్ఠ బాణమూర్తి.' ib. VII. v. 29.

(p. 41) atiśajhamu ati-ṣayamu. [Skt.] adj. Much, excessive (In Telugu) Marvellous, wonderful, uncommon. అత్యంతమైన, చోద్యమైన n. Excellence, pre-eminence, pride. అతిశయము. ఎక్కువ ఇదియేమి అతిశయము what great matter is this. అతిశయపడు v. To be proud of. గర్వించు అతిశయించు or అతిశయిల్లు v. To overmatch, surpass. To increase, become augmented. మించు, ఎక్కువ అగు. అతిశయోక్తి exaggeration, hyperbole.

(p. 45) adharvaṇakārika adharvaṇa-kārika. [Skt.] n. The name of a certain grammatical treatise written in Sanscrit, regarding Telugu, of which only some fragment remain.

(p. 103) asunnati a-sunnati. [Skt. అ not,+Arabic సున్నతి circumcision) n. Uncircumcision. [Used in Pritchett's Telugu Gospels, 1819]. అసున్నతీయులు the uncircumcised.

(p. 105) ā The broad vowel A, as in arm, father. [The Secondary form of this letter is -- which is a modified form of the upright stroke | used to denote the long sound of a in Sanskrit. [The ingenuity of the inventors of the Indian Alphabets is shown by the way in which they formed the long vowels out of the short ones by giving a slightly different turn to their forms. See Taylor.] 2. The demonstrative sign, as ఆ పని that act, ఆ కథలు those stories, ఆ వెనుక after that, ఆ తెల్లవారి next morning. ఆ ఆ (or ఆయా) యిండ్లలో in the various houses. 3. As a contraction ఆ stands for ఆశ్వాసము chapter; also for a certain verse ఆటవెలడి of a certain metre. 4. As a Sanskrit prefix it means Upto, Until, As far as; as ఆచంద్రార్కము or ఆచంద్రతారకము as long as the moon and the sun or stars last. ఆజానువు to the knee. అపాదమత్తకము. from head to foot. ఆబాలగోపాలము up to or including the children and the shepherds. ఆసముద్రము as far as the sea. See ఆకంఠము and ఆచండాలము. 5. A Telugu affix denoting question, or surprise as అతడా (is it) he? 6. An interjection ఆ, or ఆ ఆ, or ఆహ Yes, Aye: or Ah! A. iv. 5.
