(p. 3) aṅkuramu ankuramu. [Skt.] n. A germ, a sprout, a bud. మొలక. నఖాంకురములు nail-marks, ప్రేమాంకురము the germ of love. నంశాంకురము నిలిచేలాగు దత్తుచేసికొనెను he adopted a son to preserve the stem of his family. ఆయనకు అంకురములేనందున as he left no heir.

(p. 110) ajavañjavamu āja-vanjavamu. [Skt.] n. The world, earthly ties. A family. సంసారము. 'ఆజవంజవభ్రమాతీత మార్గుడై.' (Chenn. iv. 132.) He who is freed from earthly ties. అజవంజవమానమాలిన్యము worldy defilement.

(p. 49) anagu anagu. [Tel.] v. n. To unite with; to obey. అనగిపెనగియుండు anagi-penagi-yunḍu. v. n. To be familiar, easy, affable. కలియగలుపుగానుండు. 'అట్టిజగజంతకేగాని యనగిపెనగియుండుదువెనీవు మాబోంట్ల యొద్దజేరి.' N. ix. 393.

(p. 58) anūkamu anūkamu. [Skt.] n. Race, family; peculiarity of race, character. అన్వయము, శీలము.

(p. 60) anvavāyamu anvavāyamu. [Skt.] n. Lineage, descent, race, family. వంశము.

(p. 69) abhijātamu abhi-jātamu. [Skt.] adj. Born, produced. అభిజాతుడు a high caste man, a man of a high family. మంచి కులమున బుట్టినవాడు.

(p. 71) abhivṛddhi abhi-vriddhi. [Skt.] n. Increase, improvement, progress, augmentation. పెంపు. వంశాభివృద్ధి, కులాభివృద్ధి increase of a family. అభివృద్ధిచేయు v. a. To increase, swell, improve, augment పెంచు, అధికము చేయు, అభివృద్ధియగు v. n. To increase, prosper. అక్షయమగు, పెరుగు.

(p. 91) alluḍu alluḍu. [Tel. from అల్లు lit. one who plaits, i.e., who is the means by which the family circle is enlarged.] n. A son-in-law. జామాత, మేనల్లుడు the son of a man's sister, or of a woman's brother. అల్లుడుకొమాళ్లు n. plu. Foster brothers or vassals, who feed at the baron's table and form his body-guard. దొరతోదొరగా భోజనము చేసి అతనికి అంగరక్షకులుగా నుండేవారు. అల్లువాడు n. A son-in-law. అల్లుడు, జామాత. 'అల్లువాని మృతికి నాత్మజింతించును, తనయు మృతికి దానె తలచుచుండు, పుణ్యపురుషు మృతికి భూలోకజనులకు నుర్వి క్రుంగినట్టులుండు.' Vema. 1288.

(p. 92) avagrahamu ava-grahamu. [Skt.] n. Drought, famine, Obstacle, impediment. వర్షప్రతిబంధము, కరువు, వరవు, ప్రతిబంధము.

(p. 93) avatariñcu ava-tarinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To come down, to get down into. దిగు. To be born. పుట్టు. To appear, to put on a form, to become incarnate. అవతారమెత్తు. విష్ణువు మత్స్యముగా అవతరించెను Vishnu appeared as a fish. కృష్ణుడుగా అవతరించెను he was born as Krishna, or he appeared as Krishna or he put on the form of Krishna. అవతారము ava-tāramu. [Skt.] n. Incarnation, metamorphosis. The descent of a deity from heaven in a particular shape, the appearance of any deity upon earth, origin. దేవుడు రూపాంతరమును ఎత్తడము. విష్ణువు ఎత్తిన దశావతారములు the ten incarnations of Vishnu. రామావతారమెత్తినప్పుడు when he appeared on earth as Rama. వాడు గర్వావతారము he is pride incarnate, అది క్షామావతారము she is the genius of famine. (Shakesp. 2. Hen. IV. act. 3.) 'famine in the abstract, famine embodied, or personified.' అవతారపురుషుడు avatāra-purushuḍu. n. A god man, a divinē being in human form. మహాత్ముడు.

(p. 97) avibhaktamu a-vibhaktamu. [Skt.] adj. Undivided, unpartitioned, unseparated, joint. పంచుకొనబడని. అవిభక్తులు a-vi-bhaktulu. n. plu. Those who live together without dividing their inheritance, those who live as one family. భాగాలు తీరనివారు, పాళ్లు పంచుకొననివారు. మీరు విభక్తులా అవిభక్తులా do you live apart from your brothers or not?

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 113) āturata or ఆతురము āturata. [Skt.] n. Hurry, eagerness, affection. ఆతురచిత్తయై being afflicted. గర్భాతురము famishing hunger. క్షుధాతురడై famishing with hunger. కామాతురుడై eager with lust. ఆతురపడు ātura-paḍu. v. n. To hurry or haste. ఆతురుడు āturuḍu. n. He who is eager.

(p. 122) ārudrapurugu or ఆర్ద్రపురుగు ārudra-purugu. [Tel.] n. An insect of a bright red colour belonging to the Mite family. Its body resembles silk; so it is also called పట్టుపురుగు or చందమామపురుగు.

(p. 128) āśramamu āṣramamu. [Skt.] n. Abode, cell, hermitage, retreat (equivalent to a Living, rectory or see). State, stage, period or time of life from a religious point of view. There are four such stages, viz, 1. బ్రహ్మచర్యము bachelorhood or studentship. 2. గార్హస్థ్యము house-holdership or being head of a family. 3. వానప్రస్థము being an anchorite. 4. సన్యాసము being a recluse. ఆశ్రమధర్మము the duties peculiar to each stage of life. ఆశ్రమస్వీకారము āṣrama-svīkāramu. n. Embracing the ascetic condition: bidding farewell to the world.
