(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 27) agrimamu agrimamu. [Skt.] adj. Chief, principal, best, first. అగ్రిముడు n. A chief, a leader.

(p. 27) agrēdidhiṣuvu agrē-didhishuvu. [Skt.] n. A woman's first husband.

(p. 59) annaprāśanamu anna-prāṣanamu. [Skt.] n. The ceremony of giving an infant solid food for the first time. చంటిబిడ్డకు మొట్టమొదట అన్నముపెట్టే శుభప్రయోజనము.

(p. 99) aśvini aṣvini. [Skt.] n. The first lunar mansion. మొదటి నక్షత్రము. The twins in the zodiac; the head of the Aries or the 1st of the 28 Nakshatras or lunar mansions.

(p. 1397) asalu asalu. [H.] adj. Original, first. మెదటి. n. Principal అసలుకాపీ an original or first copy. అసలుజేరీజు original rent.

(p. 114) ādi ādi. [Skt.] n. The beginning. మొదలు Also, an aim గురి. ఆదిని at the beginning, at first. ఆదిముని an ancient prophet. ఆదిశేషువు ādi-ṣēshuvu. [Skt.] n. The old dragon, who is worshipped as the supporter of the earth. ఆది, ఆదిగా ādi. n. Etcetera. వాని గృహాదులు his house, &c. మన్వాదులు Manu and others. ఉత్తరాది నుంచి వచ్చినారు they came from the north. ఉత్తరాదివాండ్లు people of the north. దక్షిణాది సరుకులు goods imported from the south. ఆదికము ādikamu. n. Etcetera. అన్నాదికములు food, &c. ఆదికొను ādi-konu. v. i. To have one's eye on కన్ను వేయు 'వృషభమున కాదికొను బెబ్బులియుంబోలె.' భార: విరాట. v. ఆద్యంతములు (ఆది+అంతము) first and last. ఆద్యంత రహితుడు He who is without origin and end. God.

(p. 114) ādyamu ādyamu. [Skt.] adj. Prime, first, initial.

(p. 76) āyanamu ayanamu. [Skt.] n. Road, path. Half a year. Motion, course. మార్గము, అర్ధవత్సరము, సూర్యుని దక్షిణోత్తరగతి. ఉత్తరాయనము or ఉత్తరాయణము the sun's course for six months in the northern constellations of the zodiac. దక్షిణాయనము the sun's course for six months in the southern constellations of the zodiac. అయనకాలము the interval between the equinoxes. ఆయన భాగము the arc between the vernal equinoctial point and the beginning of the fixed zodiac or first point in Aries. ఆయన వలనము deviation of the ecliptic. అయనవృత్తము the ecliptic.

(p. 133) indriyamu indriyamu. [Skt.] n. An organ of sense. జ్ఞానేంద్రియములు organs of perception, కర్మేంద్రియములు organs of action, and అంతరింద్రియములు the internal organs, the first includes the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and skin; the second, the organ of speech, or larynx, hand, foot, and the organs of generation. The last are మనసు the mind or organ of thought; బుద్ధి the organ of apprehension, అహంకారము the organ of self-knowledge or consciousness, and చిత్తము the heart or organ of feeling. ఇంద్రియువృత్తి the natural propensities. పంచేంద్రియములు the five organs of sense. పంచేంద్రియబద్ధుడు the sensual man, one who is a slave to his lusts.

(p. 154) uttamamu ut-tamamu. [Skt.] adj. Excellent. best, virtuous, chief, principal, first. ఉత్తమపురుషము (in gram. lit. ఉత్తమ = last), the first person. ఉత్తమర్ణుడు ut-tamarnuṇu. [Skt. ఉత్తమ+ఋణము] n. A creditor. అప్పిచ్చినవాడు. ఉత్తమాంగము ut-tam-āngamu. [Skt. అంగము] n. The principal member, i.e., the head. ఉత్తముడు ut-tamuḍu. A most excellent man. ఉత్తమోత్తమము ut-tamōt-tamamu [Skt. ఉత్తమ+ఉత్తమ] adj. Superlative, best, excellent.

(p. 154) uttaramu uttaramu. [Skt.] adj. Secondary subsequent, following after. మీదిది. ఉత్తరభాగము the sequel or supplement. ఉత్తర రామాయణము the sequel to the Rāmāyaṇa. ఉత్తరసాధనము a further means. ఉత్తరసాక్షి a subscribing witness. సాక్షులగుటకు సాక్షి. ఉత్తర పక్షము the party who support the affirmative. Also, the affirmative proposition సిద్ధాంతము, the party in opposition being called ప్రతిపక్షము; the hypothesis or affirmative proposition, the second part or deduction from an argument. ఉత్తరార్థము the second half of an argument being the demonstration or exemplification of the పూర్వార్ధము or assertion first made. ఉత్తరోత్తర adv. Ever after, at any future time, hereafter, in course of time, gradually.

(p. 206) okaṭi okaṭi. [Tel.] n. and adj. One. ఇందువల్ల ఒకటి వచ్చును from this one thing may result. ఇందులో ఒకటిన్ని తక్కువ లేదు there is not a single thing wanting. ఎవ్వరియింట్లోనైనా ఒకటే it is no matter in whose house (he) is. నేను చెప్పినది ఒకటి వాడు చేసినది ఒకటి I told him one thing and he did another. ఒకటి వెనుక ఒకటి one after another. దోవకు రెండు పక్కలను అడవి ఒకటే గాని దారి మంచిదే there is nothing but jungle on both sides, but the way is good. ఒకటిగా okaṭi-gā. adv. Together, unitedly, unanimously, conjointly. ఒకటిచేయు okaṭi-chēyu. v. a. To make one, unite, mix. ఒకటియగు okaṭi-y-agu. v. n. To be combined. ఒకట okaṭa. On or in one. At one time ఏకకాలమునందు. ఒకటొకటిగా okaṭ-okaṭi-gā. adv. Separately, one by one, one after another. ఒకటో okaṭō. adj. First. ఒకటోసాక్షి the first witness.

(p. 231) kaṭṭāṇi kaṭṭāṇì. [Tel.] adj. Fine, first class; కట్టాణిముత్తెము a matchless pearl. See ఆణి. కట్టాణిగుండ్లు kaṭṭaṇi-guṇḍlu. n. A necklace of small gold beads.
