(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 6) aṅgāraśakaṭi angāra-ṣakaṭi. [Skt.] n. A stove, a small portable fire pan. కుంపటి

(p. 8) aṇṭiñcu antintsu. [Tel.] v. a. To paste, stick, glue cause to adhere. To unite, join. To light or set on fire. కాలినమన్ను కాలనిమన్ను అంటదు burnt earth will not adhere to moist, i. e. we shall never be friends. వాణ్ని తేలు అంటించినది a scorpion stung him. వానికి మంచి దెబ్బలు అంటించినారు they gave him a good thrashing. ఆ సమయములో ఒక మాటను అంటించినాడు he put in a word at that moment.

(p. 8) aṇṭukonu anṭu konu. [Tel.] v. n. To cleave, adhere to, stick, stick as paste. To catch fire. వాడు దాన్ని అంటుకొని పోయినాడు he carried her away, he has run away with her. అ యిల్లు అంటు కొస్నది the house has caught fire. వాదు వా వుస్మకముసు అంటుకొని పోయినాడు he stole my book. ఊపిరిమాత్రము అంటుకొనియున్నది his breath just remains in him. వానికడుపు వెన్నుతో అంటుకొనిపోయినది his belly sticks to his back-bone, i. e., he is emaciated.

(p. 13) antika antika. [Skt.] n. A fire-place, hearth. పొయ్యి. 'చెరుకుముత్తియముల్ చిటిలించి తద్రసంబనిశము పండునంతికతలాంతికచూర్ణము చేయుబప్పురిజ్.' D. A. 1. 79.

(p. 16) ambarīṣamu ambarīshamu. [Tel.] n. A fire pot, a portable stove. వేపుడుచట్టి అంబరీషుడు. Name of a king, the Assyrien Ambarice.

(p. 18) akampitamu a-kampitamu. [Skt.] adj. Unshaken, firm అకంపితరభసము great speed.

(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 26) agni agni. [Skt. Lat. ignis.] n. Fire.జఠరాగ్ని the gastric juice, the digestive power. ఆగ్నేయమూల the south-east point. అగ్నిష్టోమము a sacrifice to the god of fire. అగ్నిపురము the pudendum muliebre. శోకాగ్ని mental anguish. చింతాగ్ని corroding care. అగ్నివైద్యము the use of a cautery. అగ్నిగుండము a fire-pit. అగ్నింధనము kindling or feeding the fire. అగ్నికణము a spark of fire. అగ్ని కార్యము kindling or feeding the sacrificial fire with oblations of liquid butter. అగ్నికాష్టము Agallochum అగరుగంధపు చెక్క అగ్నిక్రియ funeral riter or other religious acts performed by means of fire. అగ్నిజిహ్వ a tongue or flame of fire. అగ్నిజ్వాల a flame of fire. త్రేతాగ్నులు the three sacred fires called గార్హపత్యము, అహవనీయము and దాక్షిణము అగ్నినక్షత్రము the Pleiades. అగ్నిపరీక్ష ordeal by fire. అగ్నిపర్వతము a volcano. అగ్నిప్రవేశము entering the fire, self-immolation by means of fire. అగ్నిబాణము an arrow of fire, a rocket. అగ్నిమంధనము production of fire by friction. అగ్నిమయము fiery. అగ్ని మాంద్యము indigestion, dyspepsia. అగ్నిరాశి a heap of fire. అగ్నివర్ణము the colour of fire. అగ్ని సంస్కారము the consecration of fire, the performance of any rite by means of fire. అగ్నిసాక్షికముగా in the presence of fire as witness. అగ్న్యాస్త్రము fire thrown as a rocket. అగ్నియుత్పాతము a fiery portent, meteor. అగ్నిమండలము a large caterpillar that destroys crops and whose touch is supposed to occasion inflammation. అగ్ని మాత n. The plant called Ceylon lead-wort. Plumbago Ẕelanica. చిత్రమూలము. అగ్నివేండపాకు ammannia baccifera or blistering Ammannia (Watts) అగ్ని శిఖ. a flame of fire. Also a plant (Gloriosa superba) తరిగొర్రెచెట్టు, కుంకుమపువ్వు చెట్టు the Saf-flower plant. అగ్నిహోత్రము fire. అగ్నిహోత్రుడు the god of fire. అగ్నిహోత్రాలు కాల్చుచున్నాడు or చేయుచున్నాడు colloquial for 'he is smoking.'

(p. 27) agrimamu agrimamu. [Skt.] adj. Chief, principal, best, first. అగ్రిముడు n. A chief, a leader.

(p. 27) agrēdidhiṣuvu agrē-didhishuvu. [Skt.] n. A woman's first husband.

(p. 27) acala a-chala. [Skt. lit. not shaking.] n. The earth, as being stable. భూమి. అచలము n. A mountain, a hill. అచలుడు n. He who is firm.

(p. 43) adumu adumu. [Tel.] v. a. To press, squeeze. అణచు. దానిని అదిమి పట్టుకో press it and hold it firmly. అదమడము n. Compression. అదమాడు n. Squeezing, pressing down. ఒత్తడము.

(p. 47) adhṛti a-dhriti. [Skt.] Want of firmness.

(p. 48) adhvaramu adhvaramu. [Skt.] A sacrifice. యజ్ఞము. 'అధ్వరవైకల్య మరయుచుంచు బ్రహ్మరాక్షసకోటి.' భాస్క: రామా: బాల: 99. అధ్వర్యుడు n. A Bramin versed in the Yajur Veda; యజుర్వేదవేత్త; the officiating priest at a sacrifice whose duty it is to measure the ground, build the altar, prepare the sacrificial vessels, fetch wood and water, light the fire, bring and immolate the animal.
