(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 5) aṅgarakṣa anga-raksha. [Skt.] n. A charm for self preservation. అంగరక్షకులు [Skt.] n. plu. Guards, attendants. అంగరక్షణి a body protector, cost of mail.

(p. 5) aṅgārakamu or అంకారము angārakamu. [Skt. Cf.Lat. ignis.] n. Fire. Charcoal A live coal. అంగారక వారము [Skt.] n. Tuesday, 'the day of Mars.' మంగళవారము. అంగారకుడు [Skt.] n. The planet Mars. కుజుడు.

(p. 7) añcu antsu. [Tel.] n. Selvage, skirt, border. ఏటి అంచుస on the edge of the river. గిస్నెఝెక్క అంచుదాకా brimful. అఊరి అంచుస hard by the town.

(p. 9) aṇḍagonu anḍa-gonu. [Tel.].v. t. To seek support in. ఆశ్రయించు. 'ఈతని నొకభంగి నండగొని తప్పుదుఁజావునకు.' Bhar. Ud. iv.

(p. 10) antaraṅgamu anta-rangamu. [Skt.] n. The mind, the heart. కఠినాంతరంగుడు a hard hearted man. సంతుష్టాంతరంగుడు one whose heart is pleased. The middle, midst. Secrecy, privacy. అంతరంగపుమాట a secret. 'కల్యాణవేది కాంతరంగంబున నున్నయెడ.' N. 9. 126.

(p. 11) antariñcu antarinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To pass over, to cross. 'బహుదేశము లంతరించుచున్.' J. Bhar. v. To perish, die. చచ్చు, నశించు. 'అట్లయైన సత్పుత్రుడుదయించు నకుచియైన గర్భమంతరించు,' Vish. 2. 366. 'సుతశోకవిపద్ధశ సంతరించినన్.' R. 5. 74.

(p. 12) antarvaṃśikun̐ḍu antarvamṣikuḍu. [Skt.] n. The superintendent of a harem.

(p. 17) ambāramu ambāramu. [H.] A heap of grain. ధాన్యరాశి. Also, the government share in a crop. (Vizag) అంబారసొఝు to heap up grain అంబారములుగా పడియుండు to lie in heaps. ఉభయరాశి అంబారము a heap of grain containing both the shares due to government to the landholder.

(p. 17) aṃśamu amṣamu. [Skt] n. A share, part, portion, a fraction; the denominator of one; a degree of latitude or longitude (Geog.); a subject భాగము, విషయము, దేవుని యంశమున పుట్టినవాడు he who is born from a portion of the deity, he who is of divine origin; అంశపురుషుడు a fortunate man, a man of talent or parts. వర్ణనాంశము a descriptive part or passage in a poem. ఈ అంశము నాకు తెలుసును I am acquainted with this subject. ఈ అంశములో in this respect. వాడు అన్ని అంశములు తెలిసినవాడు he knows every thing. అంశచక్రము a table consulted by astrologers in casting nativities, an astrological diagram for ascertaining the degree of the sun in any sign. దశాంసము the tenth part; అంశసవరణ = reduction of fractions; అంశనీయము or అంశ్యము = that which is divisible.

(p. 20) akṣacaraṇuḍu aksha-charaṇuḍu. [Skt.] lit. eyefooted; who has an eye in his foot. An epithet of the sage Gautama. గౌతముడు. A follower of the Nyaya Philosophy.

(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 22) akharvamu a-kharvamu. [Skt.] adj. Much, vast, great. విస్తారమైన.

(p. 22) agacaramu or అగచరుడు agacharamu. [Skt.] n. The hill-ranger, i.e., a monkey. కోతి.
