(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 3) aṅkiñcu ankinṭsu. [Tel.] v. t. & i. 1. To raise, take up, lift up. భుజములంకించు shrug the shoulders. 2. To move about, to brandish, ఆడించు, ౛ళిపించు. 'కరవాలంబంకించి యంగదుభజాంతరంబు బిట్టు వ్రేసి.' ద్వి.రా. 3. To turn to one side త్రిప్పు. 'నమ్మెగమంకించి.' విర్వ. ఊ: viii. 4. To hold, పట్టుకొను. 'మారుతసుతుండు ఘనగదాదండ మంకించి కదలుటయును.' జై. భా. ii. 47. 5. To adopt, take or receive. అవలంబించు. 'ధర్మమేజయమనుమాట తగుగదాయని కొంతధైర్యమంకించి.' సారం. 278. 6. To look bright ఉల్లసిల్లు. 'పంకజభవాండమండపంబు సంకుచేసిన పొంకంబున నంకించుచు.' వసు. iv. 23. 7. To extol, applaud పొగడు: 'సముచితభాషణంబుల నంకించుచున్న.' భాగ. viii. 134.

(p. 9) aṇḍa anḍa [Tel.] n. Nearness; assistance, protection, patronage. ఆసరా, ఆశ్రయము. అండగోడ a buttress, a sloping wall, built to support another. ఆయన అండ చేరి ఉన్నాను I am under his protection. ఆయనను అండచేసికొనియున్నాను I look upon him as my supporter, I hold to him.

(p. 9) anta anta. [Tel.] n. Whole; adj. So much. adv. Then, afterwards. నీ వెంత అడిగితే అంత యిస్తాను I will give you as much as you ask. అంతకంటె then that. అంతకంత as much again. అంతకంతకు by degrees; more and more. అంతకుముందు before that. అంతమంది so many men. అంత. మందిలో among so many persons. అంతమట్టుకు so far, thus far. అంతమాత్రము only so much అంతసేపు so long. అంతలో in the mean time. మూడంతలు three times as much. అక్కడికి పోయినంతలో on his going there. వాడు తనంతనే వచ్చినాడు he came of his own accord. అంతవాడు లేడు. there never was such a man. రాజంతవాడవు thou art equal to the king. నాయంతవాడు my equal, one like me one as tall as I am. అంతే అవును. that probably is the case నిద్రలేచినంతలో when he rose from sleep, as soon as he awoke. నేను తెలిసికొన్నంత as much as I know అంతపని such an act.

(p. 10) antakamu antakamu. [Skt.] n. The total, whole, aggregate. మొత్తము. అంతకమువేయు to sum up.

(p. 12) antavaṭṭu antavaṭṭu. [Tel.] adj. and adv. All, the whole యావత్తు. Till then. అంతవరకు అంతవట్టువారు. All. అందరు. గీ' పుట్టియంతవెన్న ప్రోవుగఁబెట్టితి కడిగికడిగియొక్క గనపచేర సంతపట్టు మ్రింగే. హరి. పూ. 5. ఆ. 'ధాత్రీపతులదోడు తెచ్చితిపలువుర; జచ్చిరంతే వట్టువారును.' భార, శల్య 2. ఆ.

(p. 13) antā antā. [Tel. Colloquial for అంతయును] adj. All, whole (always used after the noun,) as ఊరంతా all the town. adv. Completely, wholly, altogether. బొత్తిగా; n. యావత్తు, సమస్తము. అంతా ఆయనకు తెలుసును he knows everything.

(p. 13) antu antu. [Tel.] n. The whole, total. మొత్తము, అంతళము. అంతు ఏమైనది, అంతు ఎంత what is the total?

(p. 17) ambāramu ambāramu. [H.] A heap of grain. ధాన్యరాశి. Also, the government share in a crop. (Vizag) అంబారసొఝు to heap up grain అంబారములుగా పడియుండు to lie in heaps. ఉభయరాశి అంబారము a heap of grain containing both the shares due to government to the landholder.

(p. 17) ambuvāhini ambu-vāhini. [Skt. Lit. a water-carrier.] A piece of palmyra trunk hollowed out and placed at the well to carry to the fields the water poured into it.

(p. 22) akhaṇḍamu a-khaṇḍamu. [Skt.] adj. Whole, entire; abounding; imperishable. సకలమైన, విస్తారమైన. అఖండానందము eternal bliss. అఖండైశ్వర్యము abounding wealth. అఖండకావేరి the main stream of the Cavery. అఖండము n. A permanent lamp in a temple. నిరంతరము మండే దీపము. అఖండిత adj. Unbroken, undivided. Untorn, undisturbed, uninterrupted, unrefuted, continous, imperishable. ఖండింపబడని, అనశ్వరమైన, అఖండతలక్ష్మి imperishable riches.

(p. 22) akhativāsi akha-tivāsi. [Mahr. from akha = whole, and తివాసి carpet.] A large carpet. H. 5. 394. పెద్దరత్నకంబళి.

(p. 22) akhilamu a-khilamu. [Skt.] adj. All, whole, entire. సమస్తమైన.

(p. 24) agādhamu a-gādhamu. [Skt.] n. A hole, a chasm. రంధ్రము adj. Unfathomable, very deep, bottomless, abstruse, obscure. అకలస్పర్శమైన, అయోమయమైన. అగాధజలము very deep water.

(p. 29) ajā ajā. [H.] Amount. The whole, grand total. Also, the gross produce of a land including both the ryot's and government shares. [Vizag.]
