(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 17) ambāḷamu or అంబాళవృక్షము ambālamu. [Tel.] The hog-plum (Spondias mangifera). the fruit resembling the mango. నోరు అంబాళపుపండు చెయ్యి బలుసుముల్లు your mouth is like a sweet plum and your hand is like a thornbush. (Carr).

(p. 1396) akṣantalu akshintalu. [from Skt. అక్షతలు.] n. A kind of thorny grass which sticks to one's clothes.

(p. 85) arramu arramu. [Tel.] n. A bundle of thorns. ముండ్ల మోపు.

(p. 108) āku āku. [Tel.] n. A leaf of any sort. A petal. పత్రము, దళము. A betel, or palmyra leaf; also the leaf on which the Hindus eat their food. విస్తరాకు An ear-ring. చెవి కమ్మ. Young rice (paddy) not yet transplanted. Any herb: young sprouts of corn. A flake as ఆకు ఉప్పు a flake of salt. Any filament. The radius or spoke of a wheel. The shutter of a blind. ఆకులతలుపు a venetian door. Also, a chit, note or short letter. చీటి; a loan bond. ఇచ్చిపుచ్చుకోలు పత్రము. This word prefixed to others generally denotes green; as ఆకుతేలు a green scorpion, and ఆకుమిడత a green cricket. ఆడంగులకంటె మగవారు ఏడాకులు ఎక్కువ చదివినారు men have read seven pages further than women; that is, men are tenfold worse than women; or, are their masters in wickedness. నీ పేరు ఆకునపోకన అంటకుండా చెప్పుతాను. I shall mention (or use) your name with great caution. ఆకు అలము āku-alamu. n. Greens, herbs, vegetables. (The word అలము here has no definite sense.) ఆకుకూరలు or కూరాకులు āku-kūralu. n. Potherbs, garden stuff. ఆకు చాటున āku-ṭsāṭana. adj. In ambush, hidden, veiled, screened. ఆకుచిరుతపులి āku-chiruta-puli. n. A small species of leopard. ఆకుచిలక āku-chilaka. n. A butterfly, or a green parrot. ఆకుజెముడు āku-jemuḍu. n. The oleander-leaved spurge. Emphorbia Neriifolia. (See జెముడు.) ఆకుటిల్లు āku-ṭillu. n. A booth or hut of leaves, an arbor of leaves. ఆకుటింట in a booth. ఆకుతీగ the vine that produces the tamala (or betel) leaf. ఆకు తోట a betel garden: a garden in which plants are reared. ఆకుపచ్చ āku-paṭṭsa. n. The colour called sap green. ఆకుపత్రి చెట్టు āku-pattri-cheṭṭu. n. The clove tree. Cassia lignea. a certain game. (H. iii. 190). āka-rarugu. n. A green caterpillar. ఆకుపోత āku-pōta. n. Transplantation of a green crop. ఆకుపోయు āku-pōyu. v. a. To transplant corn. To set the sprouts. ఆకుమడి āku-maḍi. n. A field sown, but the sprouts of which are to be transplanted. (also, called నారుమడి.) ఆకుమడుపు āku-maḍupu. n. A roll of betel leaf. A mode of measurement. ఆకు మొలకాకు The self planting herb. ఆకురాయి āku-rāyi. n. A file (i.e., ఆకు a filament రాయు to rub off.) Also the name of a bird, the cuckoo (F.B.I.) బలుపాకురాయి or ముల్లాకురాయి (from ముల్లు a thorn) a rasp. కత్తి ఆకురాయి a sharp thin file for cutting combs. కమ్మి ఆకురాయి a very small file. వట్రనాకురాయి a three sided file.

(p. 131) iṅgilāyi ingilāyi [Tel.] n. A sort of fish, the thorny eel, (platystachys anguillaris.) గుడ్డియింగిలాయి the fish called scaurus viridis.

(p. 167) ummetta or ఉమ్మెత ummetta. [Tel.] n. The thorn apple (Datura) a Indian night shade; దుత్తూరము. Ainslie. i. 442. తెల్ల ఉమ్మెత్త Datura meterl. నల్ల ఉమ్మెత్త Datura fastuosa. ఉమ్మెత్త పువ్వు గిన్నె a cup shaped like the flower of this plant. ఉమ్మెత్త పురుగు a clamorous cricket that lives on this plant.

(p. 173) ūca ūṭsa. [Tel.] n. The soft core of the plantain or similar tree. బొందె. A thorn bush. ముండ్ల దుబ్బ. ఉచకోతగా గొంతుకోసి వేసినాడు he cut the throat without any trouble. ఊచ ūṭsa. adj. Withered. ఊదకాలు a withered leg. ఊచచెయ్యి a withered hand. ఊచపట్టు to grow big enough for the core in a plant to form. ఊచపోవు to become lean. కృశించు. ఊచబియ్యము ūṭsa-biyyamu. n. Grain not quite ripe. బాగుగా ముదరని జొన్నలు మొదలైనవి, ఊచముట్టు ūṭsa-muṭṭu. adv. To the core entirely, wholly. 'ఉల్లమంత గడంచి యూచముట్టుగను కల్లలాడించిన గలదెపన్నిదము.' H. D. i. 252.

(p. 178) ṛśyamu ṛisyamu. [Skt.] n. The white footed antelope. ఋశ్యవర్ణాశ్వములు horses having the color of this antelope. Dun horses. ఋశ్యశృంగుడు (lit. one who bears the horn of an antelope.) n. Name of a Rishi or saint.

(p. 199) ēnuga or ఏనుగు ēnuga. [Tel. Tamil ఆనై. (Here గు is added as an aid in pronunciation.] n. An elephant. ఏనుగుకొమ్ములు ēnugu-kommulu. n. Elephants' tusks; also, a kind of rice. ఏనుగడుగులు ēnug-aḍugulu. n. A kind of parti-colored cloth. చిత్రవర్ణ వస్త్రవిశేషము. In compounds ఏనుగు means Big పెద్ద ఏనుగుకలబంద the large species of కలబంద (q. v.) ఏనుగుకాలు ēnugu-kālu. n. A big leg like that of an elephant. Elephantiasis. ఏనుగుగొంగ enugu-gonga. See under ఏనిక. ఏనుగజెలగ ēnuga-jelaga. n. A horse leech. ఏనుగపల్లేరు ēnuga-pallēru. n. The thorny weed called Pedalium murex. Ainslie. ii. 15. ఏనుగుబీర ēnugu-bīra. n. A large kind of బీర or cucumber (q. v.) ఏనుమద్ది ēnumaddi. n. A certain herb; -- called అశ్వకుణి. (p. 209) oḍḍaga oḍḍaga. [Tel.] n. A weapon formed of two antelope's horns fixed one in each end of an ivory handle so as to form a short spear pointed at each end. ఇర్రికొమ్ములు రెండు జతపరిచి యేర్పరిచిన ఆయుధవిశేషము.
