(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 48) adhyātmamu adhyātmamu. [Skt.] n. The soul; individuated spirit or that which belongs to, and presides over the body. The supreme spirit. జీవాత్మ, పరమాత్మ Also, Knowledge. జ్ఞానము. అధ్యాత్మ adj, Spiritual, belonging to spirit, inherent. ఆత్మసంబంధమైన. అధ్యాత్మజ్ఞానము knowledge of the Supreme spirit. అధ్యాత్మరామాయణము Ramayana explained as an allegory relating to the Supreme spirit. అధ్యాత్మికము or అధ్యాత్మికము adj. relating to the soul, spiritual.

(p. 97) avibhaktamu a-vibhaktamu. [Skt.] adj. Undivided, unpartitioned, unseparated, joint. పంచుకొనబడని. అవిభక్తులు a-vi-bhaktulu. n. plu. Those who live together without dividing their inheritance, those who live as one family. భాగాలు తీరనివారు, పాళ్లు పంచుకొననివారు. మీరు విభక్తులా అవిభక్తులా do you live apart from your brothers or not?

(p. 754) pitṛlu pitṛilu. [Skt.] n. Fathers, ancestors. పితృతిథి pitṛi-tithi. n. A lunar day, on which offerings are made to the manes of ancestors. పితృపతి pitṛi-pati. n. The lord of the ancestors, i.e., Yama. పితృవనము pitṛi-vanamu. n. A cemetery. శ్మశానము, ఒలికిమిట్ట. M. iv. 18. పితృయజ్ఞము or పితృతర్పణము pitṛi-yagnyamu. n. An offering or sacrifice to ancestors. పిత్రార్జితము pitr-ārjitamu. adj. Earned by one's ancestors, inherited from one's ancestors, ancestral. n. Ancestral property. పిత్య్రము pitryamu. adj. A sister. తోడబుట్టువు. సహజము saha-jamu. adj. Lit. Born with. Innate, inherent, natural, proper, true. స్వభావము, కూడబుట్టిన. సహజరేఫ the 'common' ర as distinguished from the obsolete ఱ. n. Naturally, of itself, instinctively, personally, spontaneously. స్వభావతః, తనకుతానే. ఆయన స్వతఃవచ్చిరి he came in person. స్వతఃప్రకకాశమైన naturally bright, lucid in itself, self-bright. స్వతస్సిద్ధము or స్వతస్సిద్ధమైన svatas-sid-dhamu. adj.
