(p. 103) asura or అసురుడు asura. [Skt. lit. 'Assyrian'.] n. A demon, giant. రాక్షసుడు. The Asuras were such as Rāvaṇa and Bana, who were adorers of Siva. అసురకృత్యము a horrible deed. అసురధ్రువము asura-dhruvamu n. The south pole. దక్షిణధ్రమము. అసురసంధ్య asura-sandhya n. The dusk, the evening. సాయంకాలము. (In the Vedas and in the cuneiform inscriptions, the word అసుర is used in the sense of (1) a nobleman, (2) a powerful being, (3) a god. In later Skt. literature, it is always used in an evil sense.)

(p. 723) palaka palaka. [Tel.] Any flat surface of face. స్తంభము. మొదలైనవాని యొక్క ఒకవైపు. ఎనిమిదిపలకలకంబము an eight sided pillar. A plank, board, table, బల్ల. A board used as a slate in schools. A writing tablet, వ్రాయుపలక. A slab or flat stone. One side of any polygon, as of a lantern. A gambling table. ౛ూదమాడుబల్ల. The bar of wood in a loom that strikes the weft close after the shuttle has passed. A tom-tom. A shield, డాలు. 'ఆనిశిత భల్లములు తన మేనికిరాకుండ బలకమెరయ ౛డిరుండు భీముండుతృంచె మదంబారగ వాలునుంబలకయున్ శీఘ్రసందీప్తుడే.' M. IX. i. 154 'బలదుర్వారుండు భీముండుతృంచె మదంబారగవాలునుంబలకయు.' ib. IX. i. 304. తామ్రశాసనాలపలకలుమూడు three inscriptions on plates of copper. పలకమాగిన palaka-māgina. adj. Over ripe, dropping to pieces. పలకలు gleanings, corn picked up. 'చోడ, సరపతి యారోగణము నెమ్మిసలుప, పలక నేరినంప్రాసంగుబ్రాలు.' BD. v. 1228. adj. Flat, as a board. పలకరొమ్ము a flat breast. పలకరాయి a slate-stone; a sort of rock, like slate, that splits into plates. పలకము palakamu. n. A small cot, చిన్నమంచము, పలకసరి palaka-sari. n. A kind of neck ornament worn by men.

(p. 1105) lu lu. [Tel.] n. The sing of the plural in Telugu. It is probably a corruption of the Sanskrit word గురు. In the Ujjayani or Middle Indian dialect, as seen, according to Cunningham, in the Girnar, Rupenath and other inscriptions of Asoka, the word గురు (guru) first occurs in the form of గులు (gulu). Cf. గళ్ used in Tamil and గళు in Kanarese. కులలు as a plural ending occurs in a few words in Telugu, as కొలకులు. Vide Seshagiri Sastri's Notes on Telugu Grammar. Originally there was no sign of the plural in the Dravidian tongues. See Caldwell. The use of లు as a plural sign was finally extended to other than Masculine nouns, as తమ్ములు, స్త్రీలు, చెట్లు, &c.

(p. 1138) valayamu valayamu. [Skt.] n. A bracelet, an armlet, any thing round. కడియము, మురుగు, చక్రము, ఉంగరము, మండలము, గుండ్రనిది. A boundary, an enclosure. పొలిమేర, ఆవరణము. వలయవామనముద్ర an image of Vāmana placed as a boundary mark. వలయశాసనము an inscription placed on a boundary. వలయితము valayitamu. adj. Surrounded, encompassed. చుట్టుకొనబడినది.

(p. 1250) śāsanamu ṣāsanamu. [Skt.] n. A command or order, ఆజ్ఞ. Punishment. శిక్షించుట. శిక్ష. An edict, act or command, a charter or royal grant of land, or of villages, &c., usually inscribed on stone or copper. A writing; an inscription, a deed, a contract. Government rule. భూమ్యాదిదానార్థలేఖ్యము రాజు తాను దానము చేసిన భూమ్యాదులకై వ్రాసియిచ్చిన కాలు, అధికారము, రాజ్యపాలనము. Science, శాస్త్రము. శిలాశాసనము a charter inscribed on stone. తామ్రశాసనము a grant or charter inscribed on a copper plate. మరణశాసనము a will. దానశాసనము a deed of gift.
