(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 3) aṅkiḷlu or అంకులు ankiḷḷu. [Tel. from అంగిలి+కీళ్లు] n. plu. The joints of the cheek bones; the maxillary joints. అతనికి అంకిళ్లు పడిపోయినవి he has lock-jaw.

(p. 139) ilakarucu or ఈలకరుచు ila-karuṭsu. [Tel.] v. i. and t. To be set, jammed, stuck. వానికి తల యిలకరుచుకొని పోయినది his head is jammed or sunk between his shoulders. 'ప్రాణము ఇలకరుచుకొన్న' P. iii. 196. hard to kill: having stubborn life. అతనికి పండ్లు ఇలకరిచినవి his jaws were set, he gnashed his teeth. A. v. 13.

(p. 188) eduru eduru. [Tel.] n. The front. An opponent ప్రతివిరోధి. adj. ఎదురు opposite, other. అన్యమైన. ఎదురాడు edur-āḍu. (ఎదురు+ఆడు) v. i. To speak against, to oppose. మారాడు. ఎదురీదు to swim against, to resist. ఎదురుకట్టుల or ఎదురుకట్ల eduru-kaṭṭula. adv. In front ఎదుట. ఎదురుకుత్తుక eduru-kuttuka. n. The lock jaw. ఎదురుకొను or ఎదుర్కొను eduru-konu. v. n. & a. To go forward to meet. To act against, to disobey. ఎదురగు, ఎదిరించు. ఎదురుకోలు or ఎదుర్కోలు edur-kōlu. n. The mutual advances of the relations of the bride and bridegroom during the marriage. Going forward to welcome a guest. ఎదురుగడ eduru-gaḍa. n. A joint bond, a reciprocal or mutual agreement. ఎదురు వ్రాసిన ఒడంబడికలోనగునవి. ఎదురుగడగా వ్రాయు to write off (a sum as balance.) ఎదురుగాలి eduru-gāli. n. A head-wind, a contrary wind. ఎదురుచూచు eduru-ṭsūṭsu. v. n. To look forward, expect ప్రతీక్షించు. ఎదురుపడు eduru-paḍu. v. To come forward to meet. ఎదురుగావచ్చు. To be met. వాడు నాకు ఎదురుపడినాడు I met them. ఎదురుపలుకు eduru-paluku. v. n. To object, gainsay. ఎదురురొమ్ము eduru-rommu. n. The chest or breast. రొమ్ము నడిమి భాగము. ఎదురువడ్డి cross interest. ఎదురువ్యాజ్యము eduru-vyājyamu. n. A cross suit ఎదురేగు edur-ēgu. v. i. To go in the opposite direction to meet. ఎదురుగాపోవు. ఎదురొత్తు edur-ottu. n. A return push, shove for shove. మారొత్తు. ఎదురుక్షౌరము shaving against the grain, or, the wrong way.

(p. 236) kaṇata or కడత kaṇata. [Tel.] n. The temples of the head, the part of the forehead that moves as the jaw moves.

(p. 362) gāṇḍivamu or గాండీవము gānḍīvamu. [Skt.] n. The name of a bow used by the hero Arjuna. A bow విల్లు. గాండీవమైన శబ్దము a jaw breaking word, a puzzle.

(p. 372) guggiḷlu guggiḷḷu. [Tel.] n. Boiled gram for horses or cattle. ఇనుపగుగ్గిళ్లు a jaw-breaker, a puzzling book. L. XI. 117. మినుపగుగ్గిళ్లు కావలె. యినుపగుగ్గిళ్లువలదు give me what I can understand. గుగ్గిళ్లగంప a kind of fee paid in harvest time.

(p. 580) dabbili or దబ్బలి dabbili. [Tel.] n. Trouble. A popular ferment or fray. An insurrection. A liar, a makebate, a rascal. దబ్బిలితనము or దబ్బలితనము dabbili-tanamu. n. Vileness, rascality. దబ్బిలిపదము dabbili-padamu. n. A jaw-breaker or hard word, a distracting puzzle. దబ్బిలిదేశము troubled or unsettled district.

(p. 584) davaḍa or దవుడ davaḍa. [Tel.] n. The jaw; the cheek. నన్ను దవడమీద కొట్టినాడు he slapped me on the cheek. దవడపండ్లు the jaw teeth or grinders.

(p. 627) nakku nakku. [Tel.] v. n. To prowl, crounch down. To peep. To conceal or hide oneself, ఒదుదు, దాగు. n. A joint, అతుకు. నక్కుదూలము a beam in which two pieces are joined together. A lump or ingot of gold, iron or any other metal. A notch, నొక్కు. Reeded or ribbed work in carpentry or in silver. బంగారపు బిళ్ల. 'చొక్కపు పసిం. నక్కుల జెక్కుజెక్కు.' R. iv. 63. 'వెయ్యేసిమాడలయెత్తుగాగూడ ఖండించియున్న జంగమకోటి కొక్కొక్కనక్కు చెన్నుగా సమర్పణ చేసి మ్రొక్కుడును.' BD. v. 611. ఈ ఒడ్డాణమునకు నక్కులుకొట్టించు double up part of this belt, to make it shorter. See నక్క. నక్కేరు nakkēru. (నక్క+ఏరు.) n. A sort of plant, the roots of which are used in some medicines. Cordia myna. నక్కిళ్లు nakkiḷlu. (నక్కు+కీళ్లు.) n. The joints of the jaws. The jaw bones. పక్క పండ్లకీళ్లు. నక్కిళ్లుపడ్డవాడు one who has lockjaw.

(p. 701) paḍu paḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To feel, To fall, పతనమగు, రాలు. To lie down, శయనించు. To be, to occur, or happen, సంభవించు, కలుగు. To be caught in a snare. To suffer pain, శ్రమమొందు. To be killed in battle. చచ్చు. To be buried, as money, పూడు. To set, అస్తమించు. v. a. To experience, అనుభవించు. To incur, undergo, enjoy, feel, పొందు. నేను పడిన బాధ నాకే తెలుసును I alone know what I have suffered. Added to nouns it forms them into verbs. సమ్మతిపడు to agree. సంతోషపడు to be pleased. సంతాపపడు to feel sorry. చింతపడు to be anxious. తిట్లుపడు to be reviled. తొందరపడు to be in distress. భయపడు to fear. మానుపడు to be stunned. వానికి నక్కిళ్లు పడినవి he has the lockjaw. It may be added in a similar way to past participles. ఉలికిపడు to start. తూగిపడు to slumber. It is also added to adjectives or verbs. ఎర్రపడు to redden, blush or turn red. వేరుపడు to be separated. ఏర్పడు to become. It may even be added to an interjection, కటకటపడు to cry Alas, to pity. తహతహపడు to be in trouble. ఆ యిల్లు పడినది that house is fallen in. ఆ వలలో నాలుగు పక్షులు పడినవి four birds were caught in the snare. అక్కడ ఒక పల్లము పడినది a hollow has formed there. ఆ యుద్ధములో నలుగురు పడినారు or పడిపోయినాడు four persons were killed in the battle. వానికి బంకపడుచున్నది he passes slime or mucus. వానికి పురుగులు పడినవి he passed worms. వానికి కుడిచెయ్యి పడినది his right hand has become paralysed. వారు వెనుకపడినారు they fell back, they retired. ఆ మతములో పడినాడు he embraced that religion. పేరుపడన renowned, celebrated, notorious. తటస్థపడినప్పుడు when an opportunity occurs. మరుగుపడినారు they went out of sight. నాకు వచ్చిన ఆపదకు వాడు అడ్డపడినాడు he stood in the way of the misfortune that happened to me. వారిద్దరికిని పడదు they do not agree, they are on bad terms. దానినోటిలో పడకుము do not put it in her power to abuse you. ఆ బావిలో మంచినీళ్లు పడినవి sweet water broke forth in the well. వానితో పడలేను I cannot get on with him. నాకు ఇప్పుడు పోవడము పడదు I cannot go now. ఇంకా విత్తనము పడలేదు the seed is not yet sown. ఆ చేనిలో అడ్డముగా పడి వారిపోయినాడు he ran away across the field. ఆ యిల్లు ఊరికె పడియున్నది that house is unoccupied. ఆ రూకలు ఊరిక పడియున్నవి that money is untouched, it is lying idle. ఆ సంసారము నా నెత్తిని పడినది that family is now left on my hands. ఆ నష్టము నా తలమిద పడినది I incurred that loss. Added to the root in A it forms the passive voice, thus కొట్టపడు to be beaten; చూడబడు to be seen. It is added at pleasure to some adverbs, thus బోర్లపడిన prostrate. తలక్రిందులుపడు to be topsy turvy, upside down, to be conceited. అది బయటపడినది it came to light. The causal form is పరుచు or పరచు. తొందరపరచు to trouble, torment. పడగొట్టు paḍa-goṭṭu. v. a. To knock down. పడదన్ను paḍa-dannu. v. a. To kick down. పడదొక్కు paḍa-lokku. v. a. To tread down. పడదోయు paḍa-dōya. v. a. To thrust down, knock down. పడవేయు paḍa-vēyu. v. a. To cast or throw down. పడిపోవు paḍi-pōvu. v. n. To fall down, to die. ఆయన పడిపోయిన తర్వాత after his decease. పడుకొను paḍu-konu. v. n. To lie down, recline. పడువ paḍuva. n. A very low place. మిక్కిలి పల్లమైనచోటు. పడువరి paḍu-vari. (పడు+వరి.) n. A crop or sprouts produced by seeds of paddy, that fall by chance as the crops are cut. పడ్డ paḍḍa. [contr. for పడిన.] pp. Fallen, &c., thus, పిలువబడ్డవాడు the man who was called. ఉంచబడ్డవాడు he who was kept there.

(p. 702) paṇata paṇatā. [Tel.] n. A certain part of a plough. నాగేటిగొడగ, నాగలి యొక్క మేడి తగిలించే మొద్దువంటిది. పణతపడు paṇata-paḍu. v. n. To suffer from lockjaw. దవడ నరాలు పట్టుకొను.

(p. 760) pīcamu pīṭsamu. [Tel.] n. The chin, the lower jaw. కిందిపెదవి. A dimple in the chin, పెదవికిందిపల్లము. Pride, మదము, వాడిపీచమణచినాను I brought down his pride. A peacock's tail or train, పింఛము.

(p. 1022) meḍa or మెడకాయ meḍa. [Tel.] n. The neck, కంఠము, గళము. మెడమీది జందెము the Brahminical cord worn over the shoulder. మెడకొంకులు the collar bones. మెడనుకట్టు to tie on the neck, i.e., to oblige, to constrain. ఈ ముసలిదానిని నామెడను కట్టిపోయినాడు he left the old woman as a weight upon my neck. మెడబట్టినూకు to push by the neck. మెడనులిగాడు meḍa-nuli-gāḍu. n. The bird called the Wryneck. మెడనూలు meḍa-nūlu. n. A necklace made of gold threads plaited together. మెడవిరువు ప్రశ్నలు teasing questions. నీకు మెడచాచినది మొదలు ever since I took you for my husband. మెడపొంపు the back of the neck. మెడపిసుకు. n. A neck break, i.e., a puzzle or jaw-breaker. మెడపిసుకు. v. To press the neck, to throttle. మెడపిసికి చంపినాడు he strangled him. మెడ నులుము, i.e., to twist the neck. మెడవాలు, మడివాలు or మడివేలు meḍa-vālu. n. A washerman, a washer-woman, చాకలవాడు, చాకలిది.

(p. 1382) hanuvu hanuvu. [Skt.] n. The jaw, the upper part of the cheek. చెక్కిలి మీది భాగము. హనుమ, హనుమంతుడు, హనుమడు, హనుమానుడు or హనుమంతరాయుడు hanuma. n. The name of the chief of the monkeys (now deified) who was an ally and spy of Rama. ఆంజనేయుడు. వాడు హనుమంతునివలె నున్నాడు he has high or great cheek-bones. హనుమంతబీర hanu-manla-bīra. n. A plant, a kind of cucumber. Cucumis acutangulas. ఒకవిధమైనబీర.
