(p. 38) aḍḍamu aḍḍamu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, A screen. అభ్యంతరము, ఆటంకము, చటు. A pledge తాకట్టు నీ మాటకు అడ్డము లేదు no one will resist you. వాండ్లకు మాకు గోడ అడ్డముగా ఉండినది there was a wall between them and us. ఒక నగను అడ్డము పెట్టి యిరువైరూపాయలు తెచ్చినాడు he pawned a jewel and got twenty rupees. నా పనికి అడ్డము వచ్చినాడు he opposed my endeavours. మొగుణ్ని అడ్డముపెట్టుకొని తానే అన్ని పనులు చూచుకొనిపోయినది she used her husband as a screen and carried on the business. వాడు తండ్రికి అడ్డమాడుతాడు he opposes or contradicts his father. తిరుపతికి పోయేలోగా మూడేళ్లు అడ్డమువస్తవి there are three rivers to cross on the way to Tirupati. ఏదో ఒకటి వచ్చి అడ్డముపడినది something has got in the way. వానికి అడ్డము తగిలినారు they interrupted him. కొంతదూరము దోవనే పోయి అవతల అడ్డము తిరిగినాడు or అడ్డము తొక్కినాడు he went along some way and then cut across. 'కరాగ్రములు దృష్టులకడ్డమిడుచు.' BD. iv. 1532. అడ్డముగా aḍḍamu-gā. [Tel.] adv. Crosswise, across, transversely. చెట్టు కండ్లకు అడ్డముగానున్నది the tree intercepts the view, నేను అడ్డముగా నిలిస్తిని I stood in his way.

(p. 38) aḍḍamu or అడ్డమైన aḍḍamu. [Tel.] adj. Cross. నన్ను అడ్డమైన మాటలు ఆడినాడు he reviled me. అడ్డమైనకూళ్లు any food that comes to the hand. నాకు అడ్డమైనపని పెట్టుతున్నాడు he employs me in anything that comes to hand. వాడు అడ్డదోవలు తొక్కుచున్నాడు he goes the wrong way to work. అడ్డకట్ట aḍḍa-kaṭṭa. [Tel.] n. A dam or bank, an embankment. సేతువు, చేలకు నీళ్లు నిలిచేటందుకు కట్టిన గట్టు. అడ్డకత్తి aḍḍakatti. A broad sword. పట్టిసము. అడ్డకమ్మి aḍḍa-kammi. A cross piece, the cross selvage in cloth. అడ్డకర్ర aḍḍa-karra. A cross-piece of timber: an obstacle: a bar. విఘూతము. నా పనికి అడ్డకర్రలు వేయుచున్నాడు he throws difficulties in my way. See అడ్డము. అడ్డగోడ addagōḍa a cross-wall. అడ్డచాపు aḍḍa-tṣāpu. A cross beam. అడ్డవాసము. అడ్డతల aḍḍa-tala. A narrow projecting head: having a narrow fore head. నిడుపు తల. అడ్డదూలము aḍḍa-dūlamu. A cross beam. అడ్డదోవ aḍḍa-dōva. A crossway. అడ్డపలక aḍḍa-palaka. A cross plank. అడ్డపట్టె. aḍḍa-paṭṭe. A thick board drawn by two oxen used for smoothing a ploughed field after the grain is sown. మడిసమముచేసే మాను. అడ్డుపడు aḍḍa-paḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To interpose, to help; to obstruct, impede. విఘూతమగు, వారించు. నా పనికి అడ్డుపడ్డాడు he threw obstacles in my way. భార్యను కొట్టబోతే కొడుకు అడ్డుపడినాడు as he was going to strike his wife his son interposed. నేనడ్డపడకపోతే వాండ్లు వత్తురు had I not interposed they would have died. అడ్డపాటు aḍḍa-pāṭu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, obstruction. అడ్డి, విఘ్నము. అడ్డబాస aḍḍa-bāsa. n. A nose jewel. బులాకి. అడ్డబొట్టు aḍḍa-boṭṭu. A cross mark worn by the Hindus on their fore-head. అడ్డమాను aḍḍa-mānu. A cross bar. వాడు అడ్డవాట్లు వేస్తున్నాడు he throws impediments in the way.

(p. 38) aḍḍigalu aḍḍigalu. [Tel.] n. A jewel worn by women about the neck.

(p. 78) araḍā araḍā. [Tel.] n. The brass or gold mouth of a scabbard. A particular kind of neck jewel. Also, the lion's heads at the ends of the pole of Hindu marriage palankeen. కర్నాటకపల్లకీ బొంగుకొనుకువేసే సింహలలాటములు.

(p. 86) alaṅkariñcu alankarinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To adorn, embellish. సింగారించు. అలంకరణము alankaraṇamu. [Skt.] Act of adorning; decoration. అలంకారము alankāramu. n. Ornament, adornment. A jewel. In Rhetoric, a rhetorical figure. భూషణము, శృంగారము. అలంకారశాస్త్రము Rhetoric. వాడు వట్టి అలంకార విద్యార్థి he is a sham student, he has merely a veneer of scholarship. అలంకారహీనమైన unadorned. అలంకృతము alankṛitamu. adj. (p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 117) ābharaṇamu ābharaṇamu. [Skt.] n. Ornament, decoration, jewels. ఆభరణుడు n. He who wears jewels.

(p. 162) upalamu upalamu. [Skt.] n. A stone, a jewel, a rock. వర్షోపలము a hailstone. భూతలసమోపలము a rock even with the surface of the ground.

(p. 212) ommaccu or ఒమ్మెచ్చు ommaṭṭsu. [Tel.] n. The beazle of a ring, &c., the part of any jewel that holds the stone.

(p. 291) kuccetīyu kuchche-tīyu. [Tel.] v. t. To hollow the back of a jewel so as to increase its lustre when set రత్నములకు సానపట్టు. కుచ్చెతీసినకెంపు a ruby hollowed behind.

(p. 332) kaustubhamu kaustubhamu. [Skt.] n. A carbuncle. The breastplate or jewel worn at his breast by the god Vishnu. Metaphorically, gem or masterpiece, or the noblest thing. The 'jewel' or middle ornament in a collar of knighthood. అద్వైతకాస్తుభము the masterpiece of Monism (name of a book.)

(p. 361) gallu or గల్లుగల్లు gallu. [Tel.] n. A loud noise. A tingling noise, as of jewels. నగల మ్రోత.

(p. 379) gummatīlu gumma-tīlu. [Tel.] n. A jewel worn by women in the lobe of the ear. చెవి తమ్మెలదుంచేసొమ్ము.

(p. 404) candruḍu chandruḍu. [Skt.] n. The moon; the regent of the moon. చంద్రుడు ఉదయించినాడు the moon arose. చంద్రుడు అస్తమించినాడు the moon set. రామచంద్రుడు the moon-like or beautiful Rāma. చంద్రముఖి chandra-mukhi. n. A beautiful woman. చంద్రమూల chandra-mūla. n. The plant called Kœmpferia Galanga. Rox. i. 15. చంద్రవంక chandra-vanka. n. A half-moon, or crescent. Also, a kind of jewel worn on the head. చంద్రవంకలు a sort of rice. H. iv. 156. చంద్రవంశము the Lunar Race of Kshatriya kings. చంద్రశాల n. An upper room, on the house top. మేడమీదియిల్లు, మేడచివరిగది. Name of the sword of Kubēra or Rāvaṇa. చంద్రాతపము chandrā-tapamu. n. Moonlight. T. ii. 36. వెన్నెల. చంద్రాయుధము chandr-āyudhamu. n. A crescent headed arrow. NH. v. 160. చంద్రిక chandrika. n. Moonlight: a pale red tint. An illustration, an essay, a treatise.
