(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 106) aka āka. [Tel. from ఆగు to stop.] n. A check, an order, a command. Custody. అడ్డగింపు, ఆజ్ఞ, చెర. 'కికురించిరిచ్చిపుచ్చుకొను చోటులవారలాకకులోనుగాకప్పులీక.' (p. 32) aṭṭu aṭṭu. [Tel.] n. A cake roasted or baked (on an iron plate.) పెనము మీద కాల్చినది. ఇందున గురించి ఊరంతా అట్టుడికినట్టు ఉడుకుచున్నది the whole town is in a stir about this. (Homer, Odyss. xx. 10.) The whole town rings with the news. అట్టుకట్టు aṭṭtukaṭṭu. v. n. To be formed, as a cake. అట్టువలె నేర్పడుట. అట్టు పుట్టానవాలు aṭṭupuṭṭānavālu. n. An exact description. యావత్తు వివరము. అట్లతద్దె aṭlatadde. [Tel.] n. Cake-day, a feast that falls on the new moon in the month of Aswija when women offer buns in payment of vows. Plural అట్లు.

(p. 38) aḍḍamu or అడ్డమైన aḍḍamu. [Tel.] adj. Cross. నన్ను అడ్డమైన మాటలు ఆడినాడు he reviled me. అడ్డమైనకూళ్లు any food that comes to the hand. నాకు అడ్డమైనపని పెట్టుతున్నాడు he employs me in anything that comes to hand. వాడు అడ్డదోవలు తొక్కుచున్నాడు he goes the wrong way to work. అడ్డకట్ట aḍḍa-kaṭṭa. [Tel.] n. A dam or bank, an embankment. సేతువు, చేలకు నీళ్లు నిలిచేటందుకు కట్టిన గట్టు. అడ్డకత్తి aḍḍakatti. A broad sword. పట్టిసము. అడ్డకమ్మి aḍḍa-kammi. A cross piece, the cross selvage in cloth. అడ్డకర్ర aḍḍa-karra. A cross-piece of timber: an obstacle: a bar. విఘూతము. నా పనికి అడ్డకర్రలు వేయుచున్నాడు he throws difficulties in my way. See అడ్డము. అడ్డగోడ addagōḍa a cross-wall. అడ్డచాపు aḍḍa-tṣāpu. A cross beam. అడ్డవాసము. అడ్డతల aḍḍa-tala. A narrow projecting head: having a narrow fore head. నిడుపు తల. అడ్డదూలము aḍḍa-dūlamu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, obstruction. అడ్డి, విఘ్నము. అడ్డబాస aḍḍa-bāsa. n. A nose jewel. బులాకి. అడ్డబొట్టు aḍḍa-boṭṭu. A cross mark worn by the Hindus on their fore-head. అడ్డమాను aḍḍa-mānu. A cross bar. వాడు అడ్డవాట్లు వేస్తున్నాడు he throws impediments in the way.

(p. 80) arikaṭṭu arikaṭṭụ. [Tel.] v. a. To check, stop, hinder. అడ్డగించు. 'కొసరునగ నవ్వుకొన గోట కొప్పుదువ్వు నొంటినరికట్టినిలుమంచు నొట్టు బెట్టు.' T. ii. 98.

(p. 115) ānakaṭṭa āna-kaṭṭa. [Tel.] n. Anicut. A dam or embankment across a river to raise its level artificially.

To speak against, to oppose. మారాడు. ఎదురీదు to swim against, to resist. ఎదురుకట్టుల or ఎదురుకట్ల eduru-kaṭṭula. adv. In front ఎదుట. ఎదురుకుత్తుక eduru-kuttuka. n. A head-wind, a contrary wind. ఎదురుచూచు eduru-ṭsūṭsu. v. n. To look forward, expect ప్రతీక్షించు. ఎదురుపడు eduru-paḍu. v. To come forward to meet. ఎదురుగావచ్చు. To be met. వాడు నాకు ఎదురుపడినాడు I met them. ఎదురుపలుకు eduru-paluku. v. n. To object, gainsay. ఎదురురొమ్ము eduru-rommu. n. The chest or breast. రొమ్ము నడిమి భాగము. ఎదురువడ్డి cross interest. ఎదురువ్యాజ్యము eduru-vyājyamu. n. A cross suit ఎదురేగు edur-ēgu. v. i. To go in the opposite direction to meet. ఎదురుగాపోవు. ఎదురొత్తు edur-ottu. n. A return push, shove for shove. మారొత్తు. ఎదురుక్షౌరము shaving against the grain, or, the wrong way.

(p. 208) oḍi oḍi. [Tel.] n. The lap, the loins: తొడ పైభాగము. A pocket or pouch formed by a fold in a person's vest. Also, same as ఒడువు. (q. v.) పశుయోని. ఒడిలోపోయు to put in one's pocket, to devour. ఒళ్లో or ఒడిలో కూర్చుండు to sit in the lap. ఆవుకు ఒడిజారినది నేడో రేపో దూడవేయును the cow is on the point of calving. ఒడికట్టు oḍi-kaṭṭu. n. A girdle, as part of female dress. ఒడ్డాణము. చెంగాని ఒడికట్టు a red petticoat or girdle. ఒడికట్టు oḍi-kaṭṭu. v. t. To bind up the apron, &c. as a pocket. To be ready or eager to do a thing యుత్నించు. వాడు పాపానికి ఒడికట్టెను he set himself to commit crime.
