'By birth' (a parent) as distinguished from పెంపుడు 'by adoption.' కన్నతండ్రి one's own father or natural father; కన్నతల్లి one's own mother; కన్నబిడ్డ a child by birth, not by adoption. కన్న (i.e., కనిన seen, perceived.) adj. Any, miscellaneous, indiscriminately taken, vile. కన్నకూళ్లు any food that one could get. కన్నమాటలు vile language. కన్నవాడు anybody, without selection. కన్నవారు strangers, anybody. కన్నచోట anywhere. In Paraj. v. 46. కన్నదిగతిగా in any way or direction, headlong. కాకి కన్నది తింటుంది the crow eats trash.

A sharpened bar of iron to bore a hole through a wall. కన్నపుముట్టు or కన్నకోల kannapu-muṭṭu. A crowbar used in digging such a hole; called in thieves' slang, a jemmy, betty, or a rook. కన్నముపెట్టు or కన్నమువేయు kannamu-peṭṭu. v. n. To commit burglary, to dig through a wall.

When parents fear an infant may die, they sometimes bore a crevice through the wall and put the babe through it: then they name their son కన్నయ్య 'him of the cleft' as received directly from the deity.
