(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 6) añca anṭsa. [Tel. & Kan.] Also అంచె. The post or mail for letters. అంచలంచలుగా పోయినారు they proceeded by relays. అంచలగుర్రాలమీద పోయిరా they rode post.

(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 28) accu aṭṭsu. n. A stamp, a form for printing or for any other impression, a type, a printing press. An axle-tree. A mould. The handle of a handmill, A weaver's reed or stay. An image, or picture. ప్రతి రూపమును కల్పించేటిది, ఇరుసుమాను, తిరగటి పిడి, బట్ట వేసేటందుకు సాధనమైనది, ప్రతిబింబము. పోత అచ్చు the mould wherein clay or metal is cast. ఇటికె అచ్చు the box or mould used in making bricks. అచ్చక్షరములు printed letters. అచ్చువేయు to print. ఇంకా అచ్చువేయని unprinted, unpublished.అచ్చువేసేవాడు a printer. అక్షరాల అచ్చులు types of letters. బెల్లపు అచ్చు a square mould into which boiled treacle is poured, and thus formed into cakes. అచ్చుబెల్లము a lump of jaggery, అచ్చొత్తు to seal, impress with a mark, to print అచ్చుకూటము (a Madras word,) A printing press office ముద్రాశాల. అచ్చుబల్ల the frame on which a weaver's reed is fixed. అచ్చువేసినయెద్దు a 'brahminy' bull that is marked or stamped and is allowed to wander at large, as consecrated to the deity. అచ్చుకట్టు or అచ్చుకట్టువేయు v. a. To prepare land for wet cultivation by throwing up banks to divide it into plots, partitions or beds. మళ్లుగా ఏర్పరచు అచ్చుకట్టించినమడి or అచ్చుకట్టు పొలము a field which is divided into beds for wet cultivation. అచ్చులపోయు to find yarn on the frame for weaving (Cuddapa.) అచ్చుగా aṭṭsu-gā. [Tel.] adv. Precisely, exactly, clearly, evidently. 'పిచ్చుకపై బ్రహ్మాస్తము నచ్చుగ దొడిగినవితాన.' T. iv. 22.

(p. 56) anuprāsamu anu-prāsamu. [Skt.] n. Alliteration, repetition of similar letters, syllables and words. తుల్యవర్ణ విన్యాసము, వర్ణసామ్యమను ప్రాసఇతి. వర్ణావృత్తిరను ప్రాసః పదేపాదేవిధీయతె.

(p. 63) apasavyamu apa-savyamu. [Skt.] adj. Contrary, opposite to, on the wrong side ప్రతికూలమైన, దక్షిణమైన, అనగా కుడిదైన, అపసవ్యలిపి letters written the wrong way as in a seal. అపసవ్యము n. Putting the braminical thread the wrong way: that is, on the right shoulder and letting it fall on the left side instead of lying on the left shoulder. జందెమును కుడిభుజము మీద నుంచి యెడమభుజమునకు కిందితట్టుగా వేసుకోవడము.

(p. 177) ūṣmamu ūshmamau. [Skt.] n. Heat; sunshine ఉమ్మ, వేసంగి. In Gram: the letters శ, ష, స and హ. ఊష్మాగమము the hot season. ఊష్మలము ūshmalamu. adj. Heat, hot.

(p. 457) j ja. [Tel.] n. The letter J; as in జింక, జెర్రి. In all Sanskrit words it is thus pronounced, as బీజము, జాలము In Telugu words it retains this sound when followed by I, E, or AI as జిలుగు. But with other vowels it is sounded as Z, or dz. Thus ౛ాబు స౛్జ. As initials, the letters చ, cha and జ, ja are often used at pleasure. The initial aspirates also are used without rule. In some Telugu words, జ, డ, ద are equivalent, thus: గోజు, గోడు and గోదు are the same.

(p. 588) dāpala or డాపల dāpala. [Tel.] n. The left side. ఎడమభాగము. దాపలి dāpali. adj. On the left side, left. In the inside, within, along with, in the possession of, near. నాదాపలిసొమ్ము the property in my hands. ఆమె నాదాపలునున్నది I have her by me. దాపలి వ్రాలు the letters which are inside, that is, which precede. the letter N which stands to the left of a consonant i.e., precedes it. దాపలికన్ను the small end of a drum, which is struck with the left hand. L. iv. 52. దాపలించు or దావలించు dāpa-linṭsu. v. n. To be near, to come near.

(p. 631) naḍucu or నడచు naḍuṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To walk, go, move, proceed. To happen, occur, pass, take place. To behave, conduct oneself, ప్రవర్తించు. To take effect, as an order. To live, continue, last. To descend, as an estate. To beat, as applied to the pulse. To act (as a father, servant, &c.) వారికిందనడిచేభూమి the field they hold or enjoy. నడిచేనెల the current month, వానికిని మాకును నడిచిన జాబులు the letters that passed between us. నడిచినజగడము the dispute that took place. శ్లోకము నడవవద్దా surely the verse ought to flow easily. ఆ ఉత్సవము నడుస్తున్నదా is the feast still kept up? నడుపు or నడపు naḍupu. v. a. To make one walk, make a thing proceed. To manage, conduct. To navigate, steer a vessel. To undertake or govern. వ్యాయము నడుపు to execute justice. n. Walk, pace, step, gait. Walking, గమనము. Conduct, ప్రవర్తనము. నడిపించు or నడపించు. naḍi-pinṭsu. v. a. To make one walk. పిల్లకాయను నడిపించినది she made the child walk. To conduct, carry on, push on. నడుపు. ఆ మాన్యము వానికి నడిపించితిని I let my field to him free. నడుచుకొను naḍuṭsu-konu. v. n. To behave.

(p. 644) nāmā nāmā. [H.] n. A deed, letters patent. కరారునామా an agreement. రాజినామా a deed of an amicable settlement. వకాలుతునామా a deed of attorney, a power of attorney given in writing.

(p. 658) nirōṣṭhamu nir-ōshṭamu. [Skt.] adj. Lit: Devoid of labials: a device in versification, wehrein the poet discards the letters ప, ఫ, బ, భ, మ.

(p. 722) parmānā parmānā. [H.] n. A firman, a royal mandate, a command, a warrant, letters patent, శాసనము. పర్మాయించు parmāyinṭsu. v. a. To direct or command, to order. పర్మాయిషి parmāyishi. n. An order to make an article.
