(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 4) aṅgavradakṣiṇamu anga-pradakshiṇamu. [Skt.] n. Rolling the body like a log to the right for a distance or round a temple, as a religious vow or penance. ప్రార్థన చేసికొనువాడు గుడి మొదలగువాటికి ప్రదక్షిణముగా దొరలుట.

(p. 9) anta anta. [Tel.] n. Whole; adj. So much. adv. Then, afterwards. నీ వెంత అడిగితే అంత యిస్తాను I will give you as much as you ask. అంతకంటె then that. అంతకంత as much again. అంతకంతకు by degrees; more and more. అంతకుముందు before that. అంతమంది so many men. అంత. మందిలో among so many persons. అంతమట్టుకు so far, thus far. అంతమాత్రము only so much అంతసేపు so long. అంతలో in the mean time. మూడంతలు three times as much. అక్కడికి పోయినంతలో on his going there. వాడు తనంతనే వచ్చినాడు he came of his own accord. అంతవాడు లేడు. there never was such a man. రాజంతవాడవు thou art equal to the king. నాయంతవాడు my equal, one like me one as tall as I am. అంతే అవును. that probably is the case నిద్రలేచినంతలో when he rose from sleep, as soon as he awoke. నేను తెలిసికొన్నంత as much as I know అంతపని such an act.

(p. 10) antakuḍu antakuḍu. [Skt.] n. A name of Yama, the god of death. యముడు, మృత్యువు నరాంతకుడు a homicide. శ్లేష్మాంతకము a remedy against phlegm. In compounds like this అంతకము denotes 'anti,' as a remedy against.

(p. 17) ambāḷamu or అంబాళవృక్షము ambālamu. [Tel.] The hog-plum (Spondias mangifera). the fruit resembling the mango. నోరు అంబాళపుపండు చెయ్యి బలుసుముల్లు your mouth is like a sweet plum and your hand is like a thornbush. (Carr).

(p. 21) akṣigatuḍu akshi-gatuḍu. [Skt.] n. He who is hateful, hated, disliked. ద్వేషింపదగినవాడు.

(p. 25) aggalika aggalika. [Tel. from అగ్గలించు]. n. Greatness, power, prowess, pleasure. Wantonness, sportfulness, dalliance. 'మడమలందాటించిన ఘటోకంబు వెగ్గలంబున మ్రొగియునగ్గలిక చెడక.' Swa. iv. 161.

(p. 31) aṭu aṭu. [Tel.] adj. That. అటు తర్వాత after that. అటుపూర్వము Before that. అటుమొన్న the day before that preceding yesterday. ఏటికి అటుపక్క on the other side of the river. అటుపోక యెటు పోయెనో he did not go there, but is gone I know not whither. తురంగంబటునిటుబడి పారిపోయె the horse ran this way and that way and escaped. అటు atu. [Tel.] adv. So, thus, in that way or manner. అట్లు, ఆరీతిగా. అటువలెనే adv. In like manner. అదేరీతిగా. అటుగాన adv. Wherefore, therefore: so then if so.

(p. 32) aṭṭi aṭṭi. adj. pron. Such, like that అటువంటి Such a man అట్టివాడు అట్టిట్టు n. (lit. that way and this way.) Confusion. అయినమట్టుకు వాడు ఈ ఊరిని అట్టిట్టుచేసి వెళ్లినాడు he ruined this place. అట్టిట్టుగా adv. In a confused state. వానికి ఇప్పుడు అట్టిట్టుగానున్నది he is in a very critical state. అట్టిద it is such or is it such? అటువంటిదే.

(p. 33) aṭṭuka aṭṭuka [Tel.] n. A loft under the roof of a house, like a shelf. సామానులు ఉంచుటకై ఉండేటిది. 'పథికుండుండెడు నట్టు కపై.' S. iii. 179. A garret. Same as అటక.

(p. 33) aṭlu aṭlu. [Tel.] (adv.) So, as, according to. అట్ల aṭla. [Tel.] adv. Like, as. వాడు చెప్పినట్ల as he said. ఎప్పటియట్ల as usual. శత్రువులట్ల like enemies. తనయట్ల పంజ్తివారును people like himself. అట్లా aṭlā. [Tel.] adv. So, thus. అట్లా చెప్పినాడు he said so. అట్లా ఉన్నది it is so. అట్లా పో go there. ఇట్లా రా come here. ఇట్లాగంటి aṭlāgaṇti. [Tel.] adj. Such. అలాగంటి, అలాటి. అట్లాగా or అలాగా. Is it so? అట్లాగు aṭlāgu. [Tel. from అట్లు+లాగు.] adv. Thus, so. అట్లాగే just so, yes, very well, అలాగు. అట్లాటి aṭlāti. [Tel.] adj. Such, like this, like that అలాగంటి. అట్లేని if so.

(p. 35) aḍavi aḍavi. [Tel. from Skt. అటవి.] n. A forest, wilderness. కాననము. adj. Wild, of the forest, or desert. వవసంబంధమైన. (All wild species of plants or animals are distinguished by prefixing అడవి to their names. e. g., అడవికంద, అడవికాకర, అడవికోడి, అడవిచెరుకు, అడవిపంది, అడవిమామిడి, అడవిమేక, &c.) అడవి అవిసె aḍavi-avise [Tel.] n. A tree, the Bauhinia parviflora. అడవి ఆముదపుచెట్టు aḍaviAmudapu-cheṭṭu. [Tel.] n. A shrub, the Jatropha curcas. కొండాముదపుచెట్టు. అడవి కుక్క aḍavi-kukka. [Tel.] n. The wild dog. అడవి కోడి aḍavi-kōḍi. [Tel.] n. The jungle fowl. అడవిచిక్కుడు aḍavi-chikkuḍu. [Tel.] n. A kind of beans which grow wild. Dolichos tetraspermus. అడవినెల్లికూరచెట్టు aḍavi-nellikūra-cheṭṭu. [Tel.] n. A shrub, croton repandum. అడవిటిర aḍāvi-bīra. [Tel.] n. A plant, a sort of Ghosha with white flowers. అడవిమల్లె aḍavi-malle. [Tel.] n. Jasminum auguzti-folium. అడవిమునగ aḍavi-munaga. [Tel.] n. A plant, Hedysarum sennoides. అడవి మొల్ల aḍavi-molla. [Tel.] n. A sort of jasmine (Jasminum auriculatum.) Globe amaranth.

(p. 37) aḍusu aḍusu. [Tel.] n. Mire, mud, clay. బురద. ఆ వ్యవహారము అడుసులో నాటిన స్తంభమువలె నున్నది the matter is unsettled. (lit. like a post in a quagmire.)

(p. 39) aṇīyuḍu aṇīyuḍu. [Skt.] n. One who is very small like an atom. అతిసూక్ష్మమైన వాడు 'అణుసమూహములకును నణీయునిన్ను.' A. vi. 148.

(p. 42) atti atti. [Tel.] The glomerous fig tree, ficus glomerata or country figtree, ficus racemosa. మేడిచెట్టు. అత్తికాయ. its fruit. అత్తికల్లు the juice that flows from its root: This tree has no apparent blossoms; hence అత్తిమానుపూచినట్టు denotes 'about as likely as milk from a stone.'
