(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 3) aṅkilipaḍu ankili-paḍu. v. i. To obstruct to come in the way. అడ్డుపడు. అంకిలిపెట్టు v. t. To prevent.

(p. 3) aṅkuriñcu ankurinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To sprout, break forth, emanate, rise as a thought. పెదవిమీదలేనగవంకురింప with a smile on the lips.

The disease orchitis (swelled testicle.) బుడ్డ అండవృద్ధి anḍa-vriddhi. [Skt.] n. The enlargement of the scrotum, hydrocele.

(p. 23) agavāḷlu agavāḷḷu. [Tel. అగ్గము+వారులు] n. Light shoes; slippers.

(p. 31) aṭṭa aṭṭa. [Tel.] n. The sole of a shoe or slipper; hide; leather. Card, pasteboard. A headless trunk. A part or division. చర్మము, మొండెము, భాగము. ఒంటట్ట చెప్పులు shoes with a single leather for a sole. చెమటట్ట a piece of leather put inside a shoe. అట్టపొట్టగా నుండేవాడు a stout pot-bellied man. అట్టలెత్తిన పాత్రమెట్టులు. (p. 45) adharamu adharamu. [Skt.] n. Lip. పెదవి. The underlip. క్రింది పెదవి. అధురమధువు the honey of the lip. అధరము adj. Low, inferior, vile. దిగుడైన, నీచమైన. Lower. 'ప్రతతోర్థ్వాధరభాగపీఠయుగళీ భాస్వత్త్సంభ సంస్థితి.' Amuk. i. 6.

(p. 108) ākottu ākottu. [Tel. ఆకు+ఒత్తు] n. Nippers or clippers to cut betel nut with. అడకొత్తు.

(p. 76) āyanamu ayanamu. [Skt.] n. Road, path. Half a year. Motion, course. మార్గము, అర్ధవత్సరము, సూర్యుని దక్షిణోత్తరగతి. ఉత్తరాయనము or ఉత్తరాయణము the sun's course for six months in the northern constellations of the zodiac. దక్షిణాయనము the sun's course for six months in the southern constellations of the zodiac. అయనకాలము the interval between the equinoxes. ఆయన భాగము the arc between the vernal equinoctial point and the beginning of the fixed zodiac or first point in Aries. ఆయన వలనము deviation of the ecliptic. అయనవృత్తము the ecliptic.

(p. 130) āhāramu āhāramu. [Skt.] n. Food, nourishment. ఆహారములు viands, foods. ఆహారి āhāri. The eater: one who feeds on. ఆహారించు āhārinṭsu. v. t. To eat, partake of food. ఆరగించు. ఆహార్యము āhāryamu. adj. That which is to be understood or supplied in an ellipsis. తెచ్చుకోదగినది.

(p. 133) ikka ikka. [Tel.] n. Place, home, dwelling. 'చక్కదనాలయిక్క' (T. iv. 85.) She was the very home of the graces. ఒక్క యిక్క in one direction. మోవిక్క the lip. అధరమండలము.
