(p. 222) ?E0 The Sunna, anuswaram, or circle used for ణ, న, మ: as అండము aṇḍamu, an egg: సంతానము santānamu. Offspring: కంబు kambu, a shell. The half nasal 'ఁ' or semi circle is not used in modern Telugu, though some Pundits have made many efforts to introduce it.

(p. 222) ḥ The H, as in the words దుఃఖము duhkhamu, స్వతః swatak, or, swataha. It is denominated విసర్గ Visarga and pronounced Aha and is used only in Sanskrit words.

(p. 1) a a. 3. [Tel.] The termination of many pure Tel. words in the fem. and neut. genders, e. g., అమ్మ, అక్క, అత్త, అప్ప, అవ్వ, దండ, కర్ర, నేల, వల, ఓడ. But of a few maseulines only; e. g., తాత, మామ, అన్న, బావ, దొర.

(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 2) aṅkaṇamu ankanamu. [Tel. related to అంగ and అడుగు, the foot; borrowed by Skt. from Dravidian languages. Cf. Kittel and Gundert.] n. The act of branding or marking. Intercolumniation. Apartment. The space between any two beams, or pillars. రెండు దూలముల, లేక, స్తంభముల నడిమి ప్రదేశము. నలుచదరపుచోటు; తొట్టికట్టు. అంకణమునకు రూపాయి బాడిగ' the rent of each apartment is one rupee. మీదెన్ని అంకణముల యిల్లు how many apartments are there in your house? how big is it?

(p. 2) aṅkāriñcu ankārintsu. Hind. hankarna. v. i. To set sail. ఓడచాపలెత్తిపోవు.

(p. 3) aṅkālu , చిట్టి అంకాలు, అంకులు n. Name of a tree. నందివృక్షము, పాలచెట్టు Cedrela Tuna. or Mimusops Hexandra.

(p. 3) aṅkiṇīlu ankiṇīlu. [Tel.] n. Trappings, ornaments of a saddle. See పట్టాభిరామాయణము.

(p. 3) aṅkuramu ankuramu. [Skt.] n. A germ, a sprout, a bud. మొలక. నఖాంకురములు nail-marks, ప్రేమాంకురము the germ of love. నంశాంకురము నిలిచేలాగు దత్తుచేసికొనెను he adopted a son to preserve the stem of his family. ఆయనకు అంకురములేనందున as he left no heir.

(p. 3) aṅkuriñcu ankurinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To sprout, break forth, emanate, rise as a thought. పెదవిమీదలేనగవంకురింప with a smile on the lips.

(p. 3) aṅkuritamu ankuritamu. [Skt.] a. Sprouted, emanated, arisen. మొలిచిన, ఉద్భవించిన, అంకురితస్మితము. అముక్త. iv. 35.

(p. 3) aṅkuśamu ankuṣamu, [Skt.] n. An elephant goad, an elephant driver's hook. Also, a check, a bar, a poser, a ruling case or argument. అంకుశమున నిలిపినాడు he made them stop short. ఇది జ్వరాంకుశము this is a specific against fever, that which arrests the disease. కవిగజాంకుశము (title of a book) a code to guide the poets. అంకుశమునకురాని ungovernable, head-strong, untractable, indocile.

(p. 4) aṅke anke. [Tel.] n. A numerical figure అంకము. Opportunity, time. One pack, half a bullock load. A form of అణక. Bringing the yoke under the neck, as by a troublesome bullock. ఎద్దులు అంకె వేసికొన్నవి the bullocks turned restive, bringing the yoke under the neck. A command, authority, control, restraint, check. అంకెగొను v. i. To cover oneself with కప్పుకొను. అంకెచేయు v. i. To obstruct అడ్డగించు.అంకెకురాని,(భాస్క.2.) ungovernable. అంకెకురావు, అనగా అక్కరకురావు they will not be of any use. అంకెవేసికొను or అణకవేసికొను v. n. To be restive, as a bullock in the yoke. ఎద్దయకాడికెదురు తిరుగుట. నాడు తేపతేపకు అంకెవేసికొనును. he turns restive every now and then.

(p. 4) aṅgadēśamu angadēṣamu. [Skt.] n. An ancient name for the country near the junction of the river Sarayu with the Ganges.

(p. 4) aṅgana angana. [Skt. from అంగము] n. A woman. పుణ్యాంగన a noble dame.
