(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 4) aṅgavradakṣiṇamu anga-pradakshiṇamu. [Skt.] n. Rolling the body like a log to the right for a distance or round a temple, as a religious vow or penance. ప్రార్థన చేసికొనువాడు గుడి మొదలగువాటికి ప్రదక్షిణముగా దొరలుట.

(p. 12) antaravatni antarvatni. [Skt.] n. A pregnant woman.

(p. 12) antasthalu antasthalu. [Skt.] n. A name given in grammar to the four consonants y,r,l,v,య, ర, ల, వ, which are considered by the Sanskrit Grammarians to be semi-vowels, and 'to be intermediate between vowels and consonants, or because they stand between the consonants and the sibilants in the alphabet.' Wms. అంతస్థమద్గరము in anat. the malleus of the ear.

(p. 27) acatanamu a-chētanamu. [Skt. lit. live-less]. adj. Devoid of life. Inanimate, insensible.

(p. 47) adhōmukhamu adhō-mukhamu. [Skt.] n. The face turned downwards: a downcast countenance. కిందికి వంచుకొని యుండే మొగము. అధోముఖముగా adv. With the face turned downwards, with a downcast countenance; headlong. తలవంచుకొని, తలక్రిందుగా. దివిటీని అధో ముఖముగా పట్టినాడు he held the torch with the flame downwards. అధోముఖుడు [Skt.] n. He who is downcast. ashamed or crest fallen. అతడు అధోముఖుడై ఉండెను he hung his head.

(p. 48) anaṇṭi ananṭi. [Tel. pl. అనంటులు] n. A plantain tree. అనటి or అరటిచెట్టు.

(p. 49) anantamu an-antamu: [Skt.] adj. Endless, eternal అంతములేని. అనంతము n. The sky. ఆకాశము. అనంతత endlessness; infinitude. అనంతరాశి ananta-rāṣi. [Skt.] An infinite quantity. అనంతవిజయము n. The name of the conch or shell of Dharmaraja. అనంతవ్రతము ananta-vratamu. [Skt.] A vow or festival observed in honor of Ananta. (Vishnu.) అనంతశక్తి anantaṣakti. [Skt.] n. Omnipotence, boundless strength or power. అనంతుడు an-antuḍu. [Skt.] n. The infinite being, an epithet of Vishnu. A name of the great dragon, the king of serpents విష్ణువు, ఆదిశేషుడు అనంతశయనుడు ananta-ṣayanuḍu. [Skt.] n. An epithet of Vishnu, (lit.) the god whose couch is the king of serpents. విష్ణువు. అనంత్యము an-antyamu. [Skt.] adv. Eternally for ever and ever.

(p. 49) anantaramu an-antaramu. [Skt. lit. without interval.] adj. Next, immediately following; in the next place. అవతలి, వ్యవధానములేని. అనంతరము adv. Afterwards, after. తరువాత.

(p. 49) anantarāyamu an-antarāyamu. [Skt.] adv. Without a break in the middle.

(p. 49) ananyamu an-anyamu. [Skt.] adj. One, sole, without any other, same, identical. ఏకమైన, అనితరమైన, అదే అనన్యవిషయము exclusively applicable. అనన్యగతికుడు n. He who has only one refuge or asylum. వేరేగతిలేనివాడు. అనన్యాదృశము n. adj. Not seen elsewhere. Unparalleled, prodigious, strange. అసమానమైన, వింతైన.

(p. 49) ananvayamu an-anvayamu. [Skt.] n. Inconsistency, unconnectedness, incongruity. ఇమడమి, అసాంగత్యము, పొసగమి, విరుద్ధము. adj. Unconnected, irrevelant. అసంబంధమైన, సంగతమైన, పొసగని, ఇమడని.

(p. 51) anāsa anāsa. [Tel.] n. Ananas sativa or the Pine Apple, Or, Bromelia saliva.

(p. 54) anukūlamu anu-kūlamu. [Skt.] adj. Favourable, friendly, assisting, salubrious. హీతమైన, సహాయమైన, ఆరోగ్యమైన, శ్రేయస్కరమైన. అనుకూలమైన గాలి a favourable wind. వాని శరీరమునకు అనుకూలమైన స్థలము the place which agrees with him. అనుకూలమైనమాట a friendly word. అనుకూలశత్రువు a friendly enemy అనుకూల కాలము a suitable time. అనుకూలము or అనుకూలత n. Favour, goodness, kindness, aid. సహాయము, మేలు, దయ. దయ ద్రవ్యానుకూలము means, resource. దైవానుకూలము వల్ల by the grace of God. అనుకూలించు, అనుకూలపడు or అనుకూలమగు anukūlinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To be of use ఒదవు. To have effect, to have a good result. సఫలమగు, ఒనగూడు. అనుకూలము కాలేదు it failed, it had not the desired effect. నాకు ఇంకా రూకలు అనుకూల పడలేదు I have not yet obtained the money ఈ పని నీకు అనుకూలమగును you will succeed in this business. అనుకూలము చేయు or అనుకూలవరచు anukūlamuchēyu. v. a. To shew favour, to bring a thing about, to countenance. సహాయము చేయు, నెరవేర్చు. కార్యమును అనుకూలము చేసికొన్నారు they brought it about, brought it to a conclusion. అనుకూలుడు anukūluḍu. n. A friend, ally, patron. హితుడు, సహాయుడు, ఉపకారి. వాడు నాకు అనుకూలుడు he is well disposed towards me.

(p. 55) anuttaramu an-uttaramu. [Skt.] adj. Not north. ఉత్తరదేశముకానిది. Unanswerable మారుమాటలేనిది.
