(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(All wild species of plants or animals are distinguished by prefixing అడవి to their names. e. g., అడవికంద, అడవికాకర, అడవికోడి, అడవిచెరుకు, అడవిపంది, అడవిమామిడి, అడవిమేక, &c.) అడవి అవిసె aḍavi-avise [Tel.] n. A tree, the Bauhinia parviflora. అడవి ఆముదపుచెట్టు aḍaviAmudapu-cheṭṭu. [Tel.] n. A shrub, the Jatropha curcas. కొండాముదపుచెట్టు. అడవి కుక్క aḍavi-kukka. [Tel.] n. The wild dog. అడవి కోడి aḍavi-kōḍi. (p. 37) aḍucu aḍuṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To close, to shut. మూసివేయు. అందులో నాలుగు వాకిళ్లు అడిచియున్నవి four of the gates are closed, ఆ గుడ్లను ఈ పెట్టెలో అడుచు (here అడుచు is for అణచు) cram the clothes into the box. Also, v. a. To beat, strike, thrash. To destroy కొట్టు, వళింపచేయు. 'ఎమ్ములిరియుగ శిలతో నడిచిన.' P. i. 729. అడుచుకొను aḍuṭsukonu. v. To contract, choke, be stopped. ఆ కాలవలో ఇసుక అడుచుకొన్నది the channel is choked with sand. వాని రొమ్మడుచుకొన్నది he has a contraction of the chest. గొంతు అడుచుకొన్నది, మాట్లాడకూడలేదు his throat is hoarse, he cannot speak.

(p. 102) asahāyata a-sahāyata. [Skt.] n. Loneliness, solitude, the life of a hermit. ఒంటి, అసహాయశూరుడు a-sahāyaṣūruḍu. n. He who fights single-handed. అసహాయుడు a-sahāyuḍu. n. He who is friendless, he who is single-handed. ఒంటిగాడు, రెండోమనిషి సహాయము లేనివాడు.

'కండ్ల కింపైతే కడుపుకింపు' that which pleases the eye pleases the appetite. ఇంపైన pleasing, comfortable. ఇంపితము impitamu. [ఇంపు+ఇతము] adj. Pleasant. ఇంపైన. ఇంపుగా or ఇంపెసలార Finely, sweetly, nobly. Suitably, pleasantly. ఇంపొలయు im-polayu. [ఇంపు+ఒలయు] v. n. To suit, to be pleasing.

(p. 155) uttānamu uttānamu. [Skt.] adj. Not deep. Turned on one's back. lying supinely, reclining. లోతులేని, వెలికిల తిరిగిన. ఉత్తానశయుడు n. One who lies on one's back.

(p. 158) uddi uddi. [Tel.] n. A match, an equal, a rival. Rivalry, equality. A bank or dam with a channel on it, into which water is pumped to be conveyed to higher lands. The name of a certain tree. Bignonia spathacea. Rox. iii. 103. జత, సమానము. ఉద్దిచూపు to rival. ఉద్దులు equals సమానులు. ఉద్దులుద్దులుగా పోరాడి fighting hand to hand. ఉద్ది uddi. adj. Paired, couple, side by side. ఉద్దించు uddinṭsu. v. a. To pair, match, couple. జతపరచు, పోలు, ఉద్దికాడు uddikāḍu. n. A match, an equal. A friend ౛తకాడు, చెలికాడు.
