(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 3) aṅkuṭamu ankuṭamu. [Skt.] n. The crooked iron-bar used to open the gate of a pagoda, కుంచెకోల.

(p. 4) aṅgaḍi angadi. [Drav.] (Gen. అంగటి Loc. అంగట, plu. అంగళ్లు) n. A shop. అంగడిపెట్టు to open a shop. అంగళ్లవాడ range of shops. అంగట పోకార్చి selling in the shop. అంగడివీధి a market place. ఆ సంగతిని అంగడిలో పెట్టినాడు he revealed or exposed the matter.

(p. 48) adhvānamu adhvānamu. [Skt.] n. Desolation, waste, ruin. పాడు. ఆ రూకలను అధ్వానములో వేసినాడు he wasted the money. అధ్వానముచేయు to ruin, lay waste. అధ్వానమగు to turn to nothing, to become waste. అధ్వానమైన చోటు a waste place. అధ్వానమైన పుస్తకము a bad book, a perplexing book. అరవము అధ్వారము Tamil is a perplexing language. అధ్వానపు అడవి a pathless forest. అధ్వానపుబయలు an open waste. అధ్వానపు జ్వరము a wasting fever. అధ్వానపువాన a troublesome shower; annoying rain.

(p. 65) appaḷiñcu appaḷinṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To tap, touch, slap, strike gently with the open hand. To embrace, To smear, apply. తట్టు, చరచు, అంటు, యెత్తు, అలింగనము చేసికోను, చరుము. (p. 67) abādhitamu a-bādhitamu. [Skt.] adj. Unobjectionable. నిరాక్షేపమైన. ఇది అబాధితముగానున్నది it is not open to objection.

(p. 79) araviri ara-viri. [Tel.] adj. Half blown, half opened, as a flower, &c. సగము వికసించిన, అరవిరికంట (BD i. 221.) with a half opened eye.

(p. 91) avakāśamu ava-kāṣamu. [Skt.] n. Leisure, opportunity opening, interval, space, intermission, rest. సమయము అంతరము, ఎడము, నిడుపు, తెరపి.

(p. 133) indriyamu indriyamu. [Skt.] n. An organ of sense. జ్ఞానేంద్రియములు organs of perception, కర్మేంద్రియములు organs of action, and అంతరింద్రియములు the internal organs, the first includes the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and skin; the second, the organ of speech, or larynx, hand, foot, and the organs of generation. The last are మనసు the mind or organ of thought; బుద్ధి the organ of apprehension, అహంకారము the organ of self-knowledge or consciousness, and చిత్తము the heart or organ of feeling. ఇంద్రియువృత్తి the natural propensities. పంచేంద్రియములు the five organs of sense. పంచేంద్రియబద్ధుడు the sensual man, one who is a slave to his lusts.

(p. 174) ūḍucu ūḍuṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To sweep. To slacken, loosen, divest, open, sever, separate. ఊడజేయు To wrest, take by force. To transplant. నారునాటు. To root out, to eradicate. ఉడుపు చేయించిన పొలము a field in which rice plants have been set (by transplanting.) తలలూడ్చె he smote off their heads. R. v. 275. ఊడుపు ūḍupu. n. Sweeping: ఊడ్చడము. transplanting. నారు నాటుట. ఊడుపుపొలము land in which shoots are transplanted.

(p. 185) eḍamu eḍamu. [Tel.] n. Place, spot, room. చోటు. An interval, occasion, opportunity, leisure, opening. అవకాశము. ఎడమిచ్చు to give an opportunity.

(p. 186) ettu ettu. [Tel.] v. a. To take up, raise, lift up పైకెత్తు. To take, to remove. తీసికొను. To assume or take on oneself, to obtain or acquire (a name.) వహించు, పొందు. మంచి పేరెత్తు to acquire reputation. To cite, quote, mention, adduce, introduce a subject ప్రస్తావించు. మాటయెత్తు. (p. 208) oḍipi oḍipi. [Tel.] n. A breach, opening, orifice గండి, బొంద. చెరువు ఒడిపికట్టించినందుకు ఈ చేనిని మడియిచ్చినాను we have granted this field on a favourable lease for repairing the breach in the tank.
