(p. 2) aṅkapoṅkamulu or అంకపొంకాలు anka-ponkamulu [Tel.] n. Fierceness, fury, violence. Enmity, opposition. విరోధము బిడ్డకు జ్వరము అంకపొంకములుగా వచ్చినది the child was attacked with a violent fever. [Other forms are అంకాపొంకములు and అంకాపొంకాలు.]

(p. 20) akkasu akkasu. [H.] n. Spite, malice, anger, opposition, కసి, చలము, ఆగ్రహము, కోపము. అక్కసుకాడు or అక్కసి an angry man.

(p. 27) acittu a-chittu. [Skt.] n. That which has no life or understanding. Matter, as opposed to mind చిదచిద్ జ్ఞానము knowledge of the distinction between matter and mind.

(p. 38) aḍḍamu aḍḍamu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, A screen. అభ్యంతరము, ఆటంకము, చటు. A pledge తాకట్టు నీ మాటకు అడ్డము లేదు no one will resist you. వాండ్లకు మాకు గోడ అడ్డముగా ఉండినది there was a wall between them and us. ఒక నగను అడ్డము పెట్టి యిరువైరూపాయలు తెచ్చినాడు he pawned a jewel and got twenty rupees. నా పనికి అడ్డము వచ్చినాడు he opposed my endeavours. మొగుణ్ని అడ్డముపెట్టుకొని తానే అన్ని పనులు చూచుకొనిపోయినది she used her husband as a screen and carried on the business. వాడు తండ్రికి అడ్డమాడుతాడు he opposes or contradicts his father. తిరుపతికి పోయేలోగా మూడేళ్లు అడ్డమువస్తవి there are three rivers to cross on the way to Tirupati. ఏదో ఒకటి వచ్చి అడ్డముపడినది something has got in the way. వానికి అడ్డము తగిలినారు they interrupted him. కొంతదూరము దోవనే పోయి అవతల అడ్డము తిరిగినాడు or అడ్డము తొక్కినాడు he went along some way and then cut across. 'కరాగ్రములు దృష్టులకడ్డమిడుచు.' BD. iv. 1532. అడ్డముగా aḍḍamu-gā. [Tel.] adv. Crosswise, across, transversely. చెట్టు కండ్లకు అడ్డముగానున్నది the tree intercepts the view, నేను అడ్డముగా నిలిస్తిని I stood in his way.

(p. 42) adanu adanu. [Tel.] n. An opportunity, season, critical point of time. సమయము. 'చెరుపనదను చూచి.' A. iv. 292.

(p. 45) advandvuḍu a-dvandvuḍu. [Skt.] n. A philosopher, i.e., he who despises the pairs of opposites, such as heat and cold, good and evil, pleasure and pain, &c. నిస్సంగుడు. 'అందుండున్ ద్వయసద్మ పద్మవదనుండద్వంద్వుడ శ్రాంతయోగాంధూబద్ధ మధుర్విషద్విరదుడ న్వర్థాభిధానుండు.' A. i. 77.

(p. 63) apasavyamu apa-savyamu. [Skt.] adj. Contrary, opposite to, on the wrong side ప్రతికూలమైన, దక్షిణమైన, అనగా కుడిదైన, అపసవ్యలిపి letters written the wrong way as in a seal. అపసవ్యము n. Putting the braminical thread the wrong way: that is, on the right shoulder and letting it fall on the left side instead of lying on the left shoulder. జందెమును కుడిభుజము మీద నుంచి యెడమభుజమునకు కిందితట్టుగా వేసుకోవడము.

(p. 80) arigonu ari-gonu. [Tel.] v. a. To check, stop, oppose. అడ్డముతగులు. 'ఆలకు బెబ్బులియరిగొన్నయట్లు.' Pal. 108.

(p. 91) avakāśamu ava-kāṣamu. [Skt.] n. Leisure, opportunity opening, interval, space, intermission, rest. సమయము అంతరము, ఎడము, నిడుపు, తెరపి.

(p. 96) avasaramu avasaramu. [Skt.] n. Occasion, opportunity, వేళ, సమయము, కార్యోచిత సమయము. ఇది మూడో అవసరము this is the third time. 'చేరవచ్చు నయ్యవసరంబున,' T. iii. 39. అవసరము also means food offered as a meal to a god, or a kind of mantram said on the occasion. శ్రీరంగములో అరువై అవసరములు అరగింపు చేయుదురు they make an offering of sixty meals. Also necessity, urgency, hurry, flurry. అగత్యము, ఆతురము. అవసరమైనప్పుడు నిన్ని పిలిపించుకొంటాను I will send for you when necessary. అవసరము చేస్తే పని వెడిపోవును if you hurry the business will be spoiled. అది నాకు అవసరము లేదు. I have no occasion for this. అవసరము adj. Necessary, urgent, hurried, hasty. అగత్యమైన, అతురమైన, అవసరమైన పని urgent business. అవసరపడు avasara-paḍu. v. n. To hurry, to haste. అవసరముగా adv. Urgently, in haste. అగత్యముగా, ఆతురముగా, అవసరించు ava-sarinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To hurry, make haste. త్వరచేయు.

(p. 101) asamu asamu. [Tadbhava form of Skt. యశము] n. Fame, reputation, renown, power, influence, authority, opportunity. కీర్తి, ఉద్రేకము, యశము, అధికారము, బలము, సందు, ఎడము. 'కులగిరిపైనుండి కుంభిని మీదికసమున నురుకు సింహంబుచందమున.' H. D. ii. 2069. తన పనివాండ్లకు అసము ఇచ్చియున్నాడు he has given all his authority to his servants, he has given up the reins to them. మొగుడు అసమిచ్చినందున అది యింత త్రుళ్లుచున్నది she is so conceited as her husband has given the management of things into her hands.

(p. 102) asalu asalu. [H.] adj. Original, principal, excellent, real, genuine, legitimate. మొదటిదైన, ముఖ్యమైన, స్వచ్ఛమైన, సంకరముకాని. అసలుదావా the original complaint. అసలు వాది the original complainant. అసలు బేరీజు the original rents or account. అసలు n. The principal, as opposed to the interest మూలధనము Plu. అసళ్లు originals. అసళ్లు ఉంచుకొని నకళ్లు ఇచ్చినాడు he retained the originals and gave the copies. Also, origin, stock in trade.

(p. 127) āvāhanamu āvāhanamu. [Skt.] n. Calling, attraction (as opposed to విసర్జము repulsion.) The invocation (of the deity or evil spirits by mystical words, the bringing down the spirit of a god into an image.)

(p. 127) āviḍa or ఆవిడె āviḍa. [Tel. ఆ+బిడ్డ] pron. She, that woman: as opposed ఈవిడ.

(p. 130) āstikuḍu āstikuḍu. [Skt. from ఆస్ to be] n. A believer in a god, one who acknowledges the existence of God, in opposition to నాస్తికుడు an atheist. ఆస్తిక్యము āstikyamu. n. Belief in the existence of God. Theism. ఈశ్వరుడు కలడనడము.
