(p. 51) anādi an-ādi. [Skt.] adj. without beginning, eternal. అరంభములేని, నిత్యమైన. అనాదిబీడు immemorial waste, i.e., land that never has been brought under the plough. అనాదీయము [Skt.] adj. Immemorial, aboriginal, of unknown origin. పూర్వీకపు. అనాద్యము adj. Without origin, of unknown origin, everlasting. నిరంతరమైన, ఎన్నటికిని ఉండే. అనాద్యంతము without beginning and end.

(p. 102) asalu asalu. [H.] adj. Original, principal, excellent, real, genuine, legitimate. మొదటిదైన, ముఖ్యమైన, స్వచ్ఛమైన, సంకరముకాని. అసలుదావా the original complaint. అసలు వాది the original complainant. అసలు బేరీజు the original rents or account. అసలు n. (p. 114) ādimamu ādimamu. [Skt.] adj. First, original, primeval. ఆదిమ ఋణము a primary claim.

(p. 126) āḷvāru āḷvāru. [Drav.] n. A Vaishnava name for a saint. The Alwars or saints were twelve in number and are considerd to have been incarnations of the attendants, arms, or insignia of Vishnu: each of them wrote a portion of the 'Dravida Prabandham,' or 'Tamil Veda' help in greater veneration that the original Sanskrit Veda, of which it is, in fact, an ancient Tamil translation (Ellis.) The పరమయోగివిలాసము is a history of these personages. A hawk is sometimes called గరుడాళ్వారు.

(p. 147) uṅkuva unkuva. [Tel.] n. A pledge money given to the parents of a bride 'originally as a purchase price.' అల్లుడు కన్య కొరకై మామకిచ్చు ద్రవ్యము. శుల్కము.

Large, great, stout, big. ఒడ్డుగుండ్లు large balls, boulders, or, fragments of rocks hurled from a hill. ఒడ్డోలగము oḍḍ-ōlagamu. (ఒడ్డు+ఓలగము) n. A great assembly. ఒడ్డుమెరక high and low, ups and downs: unevenness.

(p. 253) karnāṭakamu or కర్ణాటము karṇāṭakamu. [Skt. from కరి+నాడు, the black soil or country.] n. The Karṇāṭaka or Kannada language. The Carnatic dance. A comedy: that division of acting which relates to love tales and emotions of amorous passion. కర్నాటకమేళము Native music, a Hindu band. కర్ణాటకరాజుల కథలు. Legendary tales, old wives' fables. కర్ణాటక ప్రభువులు the ancient kings or aboriginal princes.

(p. 352) gaḍiya gaḍiya. [Tel.] n. A bolt or bar. గడెమ్రాను. గడియజేయు to bolt or fasten a bolt. గడియకన్నము a hole bored by a thief, through which he puts his hand to draw back the bolt. గడియ or ఘడియ n. A Hindu hour which consists of twenty four English minutes, and thus forms the sixtieth part of a day. గడియకు ఒక మాట చెప్పెను he changed his opinion hourly. గడియ యేడైయుండగా each hour seemed a year. గడియారము gaḍiyā-ramu. n. A clock, originally a cup for measuring the hours by sinking in water. జేబుగడియారము a watch.

(p. 398) grāmamu grāmamu. [Skt.] n. A village. ఊరు. A scale in music. షడ్జాదిస్వరము. గ్రామత్రయము the three tones, treble, tenor and base. A crowd or multitude సమూహము. as గుణగ్రామము or శబ్దగ్రామము. గ్రామకార్యము grāma-kāryamu. n. Village affairs: worldly matters. గ్రామకంఠము grāma-kanṭhamu. n. The glebe, or pasture land appertaining to a village. గ్రామణి grāmaṇi. n. A chief: a head man. గ్రామాధిపతి. గ్రామణి adj. Chief, head, leading. ముఖ్యుడు నరగ్రామణి, the noblest of men. దుర్గ్రామణి a wicked ruler. గ్రామణ్యము grāmanyamu. n. The rule or headship of a town. Imperiousness, violence, outrage. గ్రామణ్యముగా scoffingly. గ్రామదేవత grāma-dēvata. n. A village god or goddess. These are the original Dravidian deities. Among them the male deities are chiefly these: పోతురాజు, కాట్రేడు, అంకాళు, గంగయ, చెన్నడు and మైలారు. The principal village goddesses are పెద్దమ్మ, కాట్రేణి, అంకాళమ్మ, ఎక్కళమ్మ, ఎల్లమ్మ, మల్లమ్మ, మామిళ్లమ్మ, మైసమ్మ or మైసూరమ్మ, (i. e. మహిషీ.) మారియమ్మ, మారెమ్మ (who probably is meant for 'Maria') యాగాతమ్మ (that is, Saint Agatha,) and సుంకలమ్మ or సుంకెళమ్మ, of whom one inflicts the cholera, another the small pox (see అమ్మవారు) another murrain, another blight. None have any beneficent powers, and they are worshipped to avert their displeasure. గ్రామసింహము grāma-simhamu. n. The lion of the village, i.e., a dog. గ్రామస్థుడు grāma-sthuḍu. n. A villager. స్వగ్రామస్థుడు a fellow citizen or neighbour. గ్రామాంతము grām-āntamu. n. The outlying portion of a village, i.e. the Panchama quarter. మాలపల్లె. గ్రామాదులు grām-ādulu. n. Villages. Lit. Villages, &c. గ్రామ్యము grāmyamu. adj. Village-born; produced in or relating to a village. Vulgar, rude, rustic. Common, colloquial, unclassical, inelegant: The opposite of శాస్త్రీయము. In Grammar the term is applied to conversational forms as వస్తాడు, తెస్తాడు, like they're, I'm, you're, he's, in English, which are supposed to be in admissible in literature, though they occur in all even the best poets. గ్రామ్యధర్మము grāmya-dharmamu. n. Sexual intercourse. సంభోగము. Lit. what is usual or the fashion, or way of the world.

(p. 420) cilaka or చిలుక chilaka. n. [Tel.] n. A parrot. ముద్దులచిలక my darling! my pet! చిలకపలుకులు Sweet accents. తెల్లచిలక a cockatoo. పంచరంగుచిలక the maccaw. మైనాచిలక the maina. పుట్టలచిలక or అడివిచిలక the Sirkeer Cuckoo. Jerdon. No. 230. రామచిలక. The Rose-ringed Paroquet, Palaeornis torquatus (so called because taught to reiterate the name of Rāma.) అకుచిలక the Western Blossom-headed Paroquet, Palacornis cyanōecphalus. The name is given to some insects, as a moth, thus, ఆకుచిలక, వడ్లచిలక a moth. గడ్డిచిలక, సీతాకోకచిలక a butterfly. A padlock. The bolt or hasp of a door, because these originally had parrot's heads on them. చిలుకల కొలికి a bright-eyed girl or woman. చక్కని స్త్రీ. చిలకకూర or చిలకతోటకూర chilaka-kūra. n. A kind of pot-herb, Amarantus fasciatus. (Watts.) చిలక, చిలకట or చిలుకడ chilaka. n. A saddle buckle: a ring at the end of the rope used as a girth of the bullock saddle through which the other end is passed to fasten the saddle. కొలికిముడి. చిలకడతాడు chilakada-tāḍu. n. A girth. ఎద్దుమీదికందళము, గంతబిగించేతాడు. చిలకకొయ్య or చిలుకకొయ్య chilaka-koyya. n. A wooden pin fixed in the wall, on which articles are suspended. చిలగడ chilagaḍa. (చిలుక+గడ.) n. The cord that fastens a dagger, to prevent its falling out of the sheath. చిలకతాళము chilaka-tāḷamu. n. A padlock. చిలకతాళి or చిలుకతాళి chilaka-tāḷi. n. A gold buckle in the form of a pair of parrots. చిలుకదుదుడి chilaka-duduḍi. n. The name of a certain tree. చిలకపచ్చ chilaka-paṭsṭsa. n. Bright green, parrot green. చిలకమొక్క or చిలకముక్కు chilaka-mokka. n. (lit. Parrot's bill.) A plant called crotolaria. శుకాననము, శుకనాస. Heyne, 130. The purple red and white scentless flower called Balsam. చిలకరౌతు chilaka-rautu. n. Lit: He whose steed is the parrot: an epithet of మన్మథ the god of love. చిలుక కోణము chiluka-kōṃamu. n.
