(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 26) agramu agramu. [Skt.] n. End, point, tip, front, fore-part, top, peak, summit. adj. First, preliminary, chief, principal. అగ్రజ్యా (in astron.) the sine of the amplitude. అగ్రభాగము (astron.) degree of amplitude. అగ్రసారము a compendious method of counting immense numbers. అగ్రాంశువు the end of a ray of light, the focal point. జిహ్వాగ్రము the tip of the tongue. Similarly నాసికాగ్రము, నఖాగ్రము, &c. అగ్రగణ్యము adj. Estimable, conspicuous. శ్రేష్ఠమైన, అగ్రగణ్యుడు n. A chief, a leader. మొదట నెంచదగినవాడు అగ్రజంఘము the forepart of the thigh. అగ్రజన్ముడు n. A brahmin. Elder brother. అగ్రజుడు n. An elder brother. అన్న. అగ్రణి n. A leader.

(p. 27) agrimamu agrimamu. [Skt.] adj. Chief, principal, best, first. అగ్రిముడు n. A chief, a leader.

(p. 45) adharmamu a-dharmamu. [Skt.] n. Injustice, unrighteousness, every thing unscriptural or contrary to principles. అన్యాయము, అనాచారము. అధర్మపరులు wicked persons.

(p. 68) abliṅgamu ab-lingamu. [Skt. అప్ = water.] n. The watery principle Hydrogen.

(p. 102) asalu asalu. [H.] adj. Original, principal, excellent, real, genuine, legitimate. మొదటిదైన, ముఖ్యమైన, స్వచ్ఛమైన, సంకరముకాని. అసలుదావా the original complaint. అసలు వాది the original complainant. అసలు బేరీజు the original rents or account. అసలు n. The principal, as opposed to the interest మూలధనము Plu. అసళ్లు originals. అసళ్లు ఉంచుకొని నకళ్లు ఇచ్చినాడు he retained the originals and gave the copies. Also, origin, stock in trade.

Sipping water three times before religious ceremonies or meals, or after meals, or after relieving oneself, repeating at the same time the 24 principal names of Vishnu వార్చుట. ఆచమించు āchaminṭsu. v. a. To sip (water) వార్చు. ఆచాంతము āchāntamu. n. Tasted, sipped.

(p. 110) ācariñcu ācharinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To practise, to observe, to be used to, to do habitually. To put in practice (the precepts of religion), to perform (bathing, &c.) To celebrate (a religious festival.) ఆచరణము ācharaṇamu. n. Doing, performing. ఆచారము, నడత. ఆచారము ācharamu. n. Practice, custom. The grammatical name for the middle voice in కొను; as వ్రాసికొను. ఆత్మవంచన ātma-vanchana. n. Self delusion. ఆత్మస్తుతి ātma-stuti. n. Self applause. ఆత్మార్థము ātmārthamu. adv. (p. 203) aina aina. [Tel. for అయిన. relative p of అగు] p. p. 1. Being, existing. One who or which is or has become. యజమానుడైన రామయ్య Ramaya who was (his) master. Becoming, suitable, fit; అయిన గుణములు proper principles. అయిన దినము a fit day. అయిన వడ్డి the interest that accumulated. వాకయిన మనిషి my friend. As a conjunction it is thus used ఐన or అయినా or అయినను but though it were so, yet, వాడయినా వీడయినా be it that man or this, either one or the other. It is added to interrogatives as ఎక్కడ. &c., and it gives a strong emphasis as ఎక్కడనైనా wheresoever. ఎవ్వడయినా whosoever. ఎప్పుడయినా whenever. రెండుకోసులయినా at least two miles. ఎవ్వడైననేమి never mind who it was. It turns nouns into adjectives as సొగసైన pretty, having elegance. Else-where it is translated who is (and is added to adjective nouns, thus) కవి అయిన భీమన the poet Bhīmana. విద్వాంసుడైన కవి a poet who is a man of learning. Thus also in the plural ధనికులైన వర్తకులు merchants who are rich. ఐనను or ఐనప్పటికిన్ని although. but, అందుకు అయిన క్రమము the price of that. నాకైనను even to me మేనల్లుడైన అంతఃకరణవల్ల through the affection arising from his being a nephew. ఐనట్టయితే See ఐతే. మీది అయినట్టయితే should it be yours. ఐనప్పటికిన్ని conj. When it is so, even then, nevertheless, still, yet.

(p. 257) kalaśamu kalaṣamu. [Skt.] n. A vase, flagon, or water pot: కుండ. the gilt ornament on the pinnacle of a pagoda or tower. In palmistry, కలశరేఖలు certain lines in the palm of the hand. A. v. 31. కలశమునిలుపు or కలశముపెట్టు or కలశస్థాపనముచేయు the preliminary rite of solemnly placing a vase. కలశపూజ the adoration paid to that vessel, being the principal rite in all religious celebrations. కలశాబ్ధి kalaṣ-ābdhi n. The ocean of milk. కలశబ్ధిజ the goddess Lakshmi. కలశి kalaṣi. n. A pot. కుండ. కలశీసుతుడు or కలశీసంభవుడు The 'Vase-born' An epithet or Agastya, who was born, like Orion, in a pot. A. v. 107.
