(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 49) anapaceṭṭu anapa-cheṭṭu. [Tel.] A leguminous plant (Dolichos tetraspermus.) అనుముచెట్టు అనపకాయ A legume, a pod, a kind of pulse (phaseolus radiatus.)

(p. 57) anumu or అనవచెట్టు anumu. [Tel.] n. A leguminous plant, Dolichos catjang (the cultivated species.) అనపకాయ a legume. a pod, a sort of pulse (phaseolus radiatus.) అనుములు n. plu. The seeds of అనపచెట్టు.

(p. 86) alacanda alaṭsanda. [Tel.] n. A leguminous plant. Dolichos Catiang. అలచందలు n. The pulse got from this plant.

(p. 108) āku āku. [Tel.] n. A leaf of any sort. A petal. పత్రము, దళము. A betel, or palmyra leaf; also the leaf on which the Hindus eat their food. విస్తరాకు An ear-ring. చెవి కమ్మ. Young rice (paddy) not yet transplanted. Any herb: young sprouts of corn. A flake as ఆకు ఉప్పు a flake of salt. Any filament. The radius or spoke of a wheel. The shutter of a blind. ఆకులతలుపు a venetian door. Also, a chit, note or short letter. చీటి; a loan bond. ఇచ్చిపుచ్చుకోలు పత్రము. This word prefixed to others generally denotes green; as ఆకుతేలు a green scorpion, and ఆకుమిడత a green cricket. ఆడంగులకంటె మగవారు ఏడాకులు ఎక్కువ చదివినారు men have read seven pages further than women; that is, men are tenfold worse than women; or, are their masters in wickedness. నీ పేరు ఆకునపోకన అంటకుండా చెప్పుతాను. I shall mention (or use) your name with great caution. ఆకు అలము āku-alamu. n. Greens, herbs, vegetables. (The word అలము here has no definite sense.) ఆకుకూరలు or కూరాకులు āku-kūralu. n. Potherbs, garden stuff. ఆకు చాటున āku-ṭsāṭana. adj. In ambush, hidden, veiled, screened. ఆకుచిరుతపులి āku-chiruta-puli. n. A small species of leopard. ఆకుచిలక āku-chilaka. n. A butterfly, or a green parrot. ఆకుజెముడు āku-jemuḍu. n. The oleander-leaved spurge. Emphorbia Neriifolia. (See జెముడు.) ఆకుటిల్లు āku-ṭillu. n. A booth or hut of leaves, an arbor of leaves. ఆకుటింట in a booth. ఆకుతీగ the vine that produces the tamala (or betel) leaf. ఆకు తోట a betel garden: a garden in which plants are reared. ఆకుపచ్చ āku-paṭṭsa. n. The colour called sap green. ఆకుపత్రి చెట్టు āku-pattri-cheṭṭu. n. The clove tree. Cassia lignea. a certain game. (H. iii. 190). āka-rarugu. n. A green caterpillar. ఆకుపోత āku-pōta. n. Transplantation of a green crop. ఆకుపోయు āku-pōyu. v. a. To transplant corn. To set the sprouts. ఆకుమడి āku-maḍi. n. A field sown, but the sprouts of which are to be transplanted. (also, called నారుమడి.) ఆకుమడుపు āku-maḍupu. n. A roll of betel leaf. A mode of measurement. ఆకు మొలకాకు The self planting herb. ఆకురాయి āku-rāyi. n. A file (i.e., ఆకు a filament రాయు to rub off.) Also the name of a bird, the cuckoo (F.B.I.) బలుపాకురాయి or ముల్లాకురాయి (from ముల్లు a thorn) a rasp. కత్తి ఆకురాయి a sharp thin file for cutting combs. కమ్మి ఆకురాయి a very small file. వట్రనాకురాయి a three sided file.

(p. 112) āḍu āḍu. [Tel.] v. n. 1. To play, dance, work, act, do, move, ply. కాళ్లు ఆడకనిలిచె he stood stock-still, his feet did not stir. 2. To shake, totter, wag. 3. To beat, as the pulse. ధాతువు ఆడుచున్నది the pulse beats. 4. To speak, say. ఇట్లు కొందరు ఆడగా while some spoke thus. ఆడినది ఒకటి చేసినది ఒకటి he said one thing and did another. పోనాడు to cry Avaunt.! మున్నాడు to advance or come forward. ఆ పేరు నోట్లో ఆడుచున్నది I have the name at the tip of my tongue.

(p. 118) āmavaḍa āma-vaḍa. [Tel.] n. A cake made of pulse (termed phascolus radiatus) soaked in curds.

(p. 127) āvāhanamu āvāhanamu. [Skt.] n. Calling, attraction (as opposed to విసర్జము repulsion.) The invocation (of the deity or evil spirits by mystical words, the bringing down the spirit of a god into an image.)

(p. 134) iggu iggu. [Tel.] v. a. To pull, haul, drag, jerk, struggle. Subh. ii. 30. To incline to a side or backwards. ఒరుగు, వెనుకకు ఒరుగు. ఇగ్గులడు iggul-āḍu. v. To pull, to jerk, to struggle. ఇగ్గులాట iggu-l-āṭa. n. Struggling, jerking, pulling backwords. వెనుకకీడ్చుట.

(p. 143) īga īga. [Tel. Tam. ఈ] n. A fly. పోతుటీగ. (from పోతు male and ట inserted) a male fly. చ నృపాలకులు ... నిగ్రహమొప్పగ పోతుటీగయున్ బొలయగనియ్యరంతిపురి.' T. iv. 17. Princes would, if possible, keep out even male flies from their seraglio. ఈగపులి īga-puli. n. A spider: literally a fly-tiger.

(p. 144) īḍu īḍu. [Tel.] v. i. To stretch, to slip, to vanish, to disappear. సాగు, ౛ారు. v. t. To pull, to draw milk లాగు, పిదుకు. 'శ్రద్ధగలిగి లోక సంగ్రహసంగంబు నీడవిడిచియెవ్వ డీయుపాయ ములభజించువాడు మోక్షలక్ష్మీపతి యగునొకింత సందియంబు వలదు.' భార. అశ్వ. i. (p. 144) īḍcu or ఈడుచు īḍṭsu. [Tel. causative of ఈడు] v. a. To pull, haul, drag. కండ్లు లోపలికి యీడ్చుకొని పోయినవి his eyes are sunken.

(p. 151) ujāḍa uzāḍa. [H.] adj. Depopulated, waste, deserted. పాడైన, ఆ గ్రామము ఉజాడైనది the village was depopulated.

(p. 157) udaramu udaramu. [Skt.] n. The belly, the centre; లంబోదరుడు the corpulent being, a title of Gaṇēsa. ఉదరపోషకుడు a glutton, one who cares chiefly to fill his belly. ఉదరపోషణము udara-pōshaṇamu. n. Nourishing the belly, livelihood.
