(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 2) aṅkaṇamu ankanamu. [Tel. related to అంగ and అడుగు, the foot; borrowed by Skt. from Dravidian languages. Cf. Kittel and Gundert.] n. The act of branding or marking. Intercolumniation. Apartment. The space between any two beams, or pillars. రెండు దూలముల, లేక, స్తంభముల నడిమి ప్రదేశము. నలుచదరపుచోటు; తొట్టికట్టు. అంకణమునకు రూపాయి బాడిగ' the rent of each apartment is one rupee. మీదెన్ని అంకణముల యిల్లు how many apartments are there in your house? how big is it?

(p. 9) aṇḍabāḷlavāḍu anḍa-bāḷḷa-vāḍu. [Tel.Nellore.] n. A sub-renter. లోపాయకారి, లోపాలివాడు.

(p. 18) akaṭavikaṭamu akaṭa-vikaṭamu. [Tel.] adj. Adverse, contrary, awkard, inverted, contrariwise. తారుమారైన, విరుద్ధమైన, ప్రతికూలమైన, అకటవికటమైన మాట an incoherent speech, a prevarication, అకటవికటపు మాటలాడుట to shuffle, prevaricate, అకటవికటమైన పని an awkward, confused or troublesome affair.

(p. 25) agulu agulu. [Tel.] Same as పగులు. 'గగనమగల' so that the sky rent, cf, fla shout that tore Hell's concave.' Milton. P. L. i. 541.

(p. 27) agrahāramu agra-hāramu. [Skt.] n. A street or village inhabited by brahmins. A village of which the old and hereditary cultivators are brahmins. A village granted to brahmins by government for charitable or religious purposes; either rent free, or at a favourable assessment. The conditions on which these villages are held are specified thus, సర్వాగ్రహారము a village free from all tax. శ్రోత్రియాగ్రహారము a village granted at a certain fixed assessment. జోడి అగ్రహారము, or బిల్మకా అగ్రగారము or, కట్టుబడి అగ్రహారము a village granted at a rent which fluctuates with the produce. అగ్రహారికుడు a brahmin belonging to such a village. అగ్రహారమనుభవించేవాడు he who enjoys a village free from tax.

(p. 29) accupaḍu aṭṭsu-paḍu. [Tel.] v. To be apparent, evident or plain, to be precise or exact. విశదమగు, స్పష్టమగు, సరిగా ఉండు. 'సొమ్మచ్చుపడంగజేయుటకు సైయలక్రాంచనగలంబు పేరికమ్మెచ్చిన నీడ్చు.' A. iv. 187.

(p. 29) acchamu achchamu. [Skt.] adj. Clear, transparent. అచ్చముగా adv. Purely, clearly, plainly. అచ్ఛాచ్ఛము achchā-chchamu. [Skt.] adj. Perfectly pure. అతినిర్మలమైన. A. vi. 140

(p. 40) atiriktamu ati-riktamu. [Skt.] adj. Super abounding, excessive. Other, different. అత్యంతమైన, సమధికమైన, హెచ్చు అయిన, ఇతరమైన, అతిరిక్తగృహము the other house.

(p. 41) atuku atuku. [Tel.] n. Junction, union patch. ౛తపరిచినది. అతుకులబ్రతుకు living in another man's house. అతుకు v. n. To join. To agree with, to be fit. అంటుకొను అతుకు లేక అతికించు, v. t. To solder, cement, join, unite to. అంటించు, చేర్చు, జరపరచు. అతుకుబడి fixing; posting; the engagement to cultivate taken from the ryot at the commencement of the Revenue year; leasing. అతుకుబడిచేయు to rent out. అతుకుబాటు giving or letting out on rent.

(p. 42) atti atti. [Tel.] The glomerous fig tree, ficus glomerata or country figtree, ficus racemosa. మేడిచెట్టు. అత్తికాయ. its fruit. అత్తికల్లు the juice that flows from its root: This tree has no apparent blossoms; hence అత్తిమానుపూచినట్టు denotes 'about as likely as milk from a stone.'

(p. 43) adava or అదువ adava. [Tel.] n. Rent. అద్దె. అదవ యిల్లు a house that is hired. వాడు అదవసేద్యము చేస్తున్నాడు he cultivates a rented field.

(p. 44) addike [Tel. from అద్దె rent.] Mortgage. తాకట్టు. అద్దికెభూమి mortgaged land. (Cuddapa.)

(p. 44) adde adde. [Tel.] n. Rent, hire.బాడుగ. అద్దెకు కాపురముండు to dwell in a house for rent. అద్దెకు తీసికొను to hire. అద్దెకు ఇచ్చు to let out. అద్దెచీటి a written agreement to pay rent, a rent bill. అద్దె యిల్లు a rented house.

(p. 48) adhyātmamu adhyātmamu. [Skt.] n. The soul; individuated spirit or that which belongs to, and presides over the body. The supreme spirit. జీవాత్మ, పరమాత్మ Also, Knowledge. జ్ఞానము. అధ్యాత్మ adj, Spiritual, belonging to spirit, inherent. ఆత్మసంబంధమైన. అధ్యాత్మజ్ఞానము knowledge of the Supreme spirit. అధ్యాత్మరామాయణము Ramayana explained as an allegory relating to the Supreme spirit. అధ్యాత్మికము or అధ్యాత్మికము adj. relating to the soul, spiritual.
