(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 69) abhinayiñcu abhi-nayinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To express emotions by looks, gestures, &c., as actresses do. కండ్లు వేళ్లు మొదలైన వాటిని తిప్పి మనోభావమును తెలియచేయు, అంగన్యాసాదులచే అర్థమును సూచించు. అభినయము abhi-nayamu. [Skt.] n. Action and posture expressive of sentiment, especially the gestures and movements of dramatic representation. వేళ్లు మొదలైన వాటిచేత మనం కార్యమును తెలియచేయడము.

(p. 81) arundhati arundhati. [Skt.] n. The wife of the sage Vasishtha, celebrated for her virtue వసిష్ఠుని భార్య. A star in the Pleiades. A marriage ceremonies అరుంధతి is invoked by the bridegroom as a pattern of conjugal excellence and the star in the Pleiades which represents the wife of Vasishtha is pointed out to the bridal pair.

(p. 281) kimpuruṣuḍu kim-purushuḍu. [Skt.] n. A 'sort of a man.' A kind of fairy, described as a eunuch, employed in the Hindu Olympus as a singer, and an attendant on the goddesses; or represented as a man with a bird's head: or as having a form uniting that of a man, a deer and a bird. నరమృగపక్షశరీరేలోకభేదే. మనుష్య ముఖమును, పక్షి శరీరమును గలవాడు. లేక, అశ్వముఖమును నరశరీరమును గలవాడు.

(p. 306) kṛtamu kṛitamu. [Skt.] n. An act, a thing done. చేయబడ్డది. దైవకృతము an act of God. కృతము or కృతయుగము kṛitamu. n. The golden age, the first of the four ages of the world. supposed to consist of 1,728,000 years. కృతము kṛitamu. adj., Done , made, accomplished. కృతకృత్యుడు he who has attained his desire. ఇష్టార్థసిద్ధి గలవాడు. కృతాంజలి he who assumes with folded hands a reverential posture before his superiors. అంజలిబంధముకలవాడు. కృతాకృత done and not done. కృతస్నానయై having bathed. కృతమతి a prepared mind or set heart. adv. [Used in Vizag. for ప్రకృతము.] At present, just now. కృతికము kṛitakamu. adj. Artificial, made. మనుష్యులచేత చేయబడినది. Unreal. కృతకాద్రి or కృతకశైలము an artificial hillock. కృతక కళేబరము a thing made to represent a corpse. కృతఘ్నము kṛitaghnamu. [from ఘ్న to kill, destroy.] adj. Ungrateful. కృతఘ్నత kṛita-ghnata. n. Ingratitude. కృతఘ్నుడు an ungrateful man చేసినమేలు మరచినవాడు. కృతజ్ఞుడు kṛitagnyuḍu [from జ్ఞ to know, to recognise.] n. A grateful person. చేసిన మేలు తలచువాడు. కృతజ్ఞత kṛitagnyata. n. Gratitude. కృతపడు kṛita-paḍu. n. To be done or made. గతించు. 'దేవావినుమువగ చినంగృత పడిన కార్యంబులు క్రమ్మరంబొడమునే, డెందంబుగుందు నింతియకాక.' M. VIII. i. 232. To be separated విడబడు. కృతహస్తుడు kṛita-hastuḍu n. An unerring marksman గురితప్పకవేయువాడు. A skilful man నేర్పరి. కృతాంతుడు kṛitāntuḍu. n. He who brings to an end. An epithet of Yama. కృతార్థత kṛitārthata. n. Success. కోరిక యీడేరడము. కృతార్థుడు kṛitārthuḍu. n. A gainer, one who is successful. కోరిక యీడేరినవాడు, ధన్యుడు.

(p. 404) cakramu chakramu. [Skt.] n. A wheel. A discuss or sharp-edged plate of steel, hurled at a foe like a quoit: the thunderbolt or weapon of Vishṇu. A realm, region. రాష్ట్రము. A figure, diagram or sign in astrology. The name of a coin. The bird called చక్రవాకము. A region or division of the body. చక్రధరుడు or చక్రపాణి Vishṇu. కటి or కటిచక్రము the loins, the region of the lions. అష్టకోణచక్రము an octagon. చక్రవర్తి chakra-varti.. n. An emperor or sovereign. రారాజు, సార్వభౌముడు. చక్రవర్తిని chakra-vartini. n. An empress. సార్వభౌమురాలు. చక్రవాకము chakra-vākamu. n. The Brahminy-duck or Ruddy Casarca rotila (F.B.I.) జక్కవపక్షి. The poetical swan, always described as being in pairs, to which poets liken fair breasts. చక్రవాళము chakravāḷamu. n. A range of mountains supposed to encircle the earth. చుట్టుకొండ. చక్రవృద్ధి chakra-vṛiddhi. n. Compound interest వడ్డికివడ్డి. చక్రాంకనము or చక్రాంకితములు or చక్రాంకములు chakrānkanamu. n. Marks branded on the front of the shoulders, representing the disc and shell of Vishṇu. (It is a rite similar to absolution.) చక్రాంగము chakrāngamu. n. A swan. హంస. చక్రాంగి a female swan. చక్రి chakri. n. The discus-wielder, i.e., Vishṇu. A snake, because rolled in a ring. A potter, because using a wheel.

(p. 422) cihnamu or చిహ్న chihnamu. [Skt.] n. A mark, spot or stain, a sign, attribute, quality, characteristic, feature, representation, symptom. గురుతు. వర్షచిహ్నాలు signs of approaching rain. A flag టెక్కము.

(p. 502) taccana taṭsṭsana. [Tel.] n. Sport, play, jesting, a joke; slander, lying, mis representation, coaxing, feigning. కపటము, పరిహాసము, చాతుర్యపుమాట, చేష్ట. ఇచ్చకము, తంత్రము. తచ్చసలాడు or తచ్చనచేయు to sport, jest, to quiz, laugh at పరిహసించు. తచ్చాడు taṭsṭsāḍu. v. n. To walk about. సంచరించు.

(p. 563) tō or తోడ tō. [Tel. from తోడు.] conj. With, together with, accompanied by, accompanying or following. కూడా, వెంబడి. వానిని కత్తితో పొడిచెను he stabbed him with a knife. నాతో చెప్పు tell me. జ్వరముతో నున్నాడు he is in a fever. ఉపవాసముతో నున్నారు they are fasting. సంకటముతో నుండే diseased, sick. నున్న దయతో చూడుము look on me with favour. చమురుగలుగుదివ్వె సరవితో మండును a lamp that has oil burns with clearness. Vēma. i. 43. అతనితో మనవిచేస్తిని I represented this to him. చీకటితో లేచి వెళ్లినారు they set out in the dark, i.e., before dawn.

(p. 570) tri tri. [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Three.'] pron. Three మూడు. త్రింశత్ or త్రింశత్తు trimṣat. n. Thirty. ద్వాత్రింశత్ Thirty two. త్రికము trikamu. n. The thigh bone, ముడ్డిపూస. [త్రి+దశ = three states or thrice ten (years)] n. One who enjoys the three stages of live, viz, infancy, youth and manhood, but no old age. A god: so named as being 'thirty years old:' this being considered the prime of a man: and the age at which immortals always continue. త్రిదశాలయము tri-daṣ-ālayamu. n. Lit: The abode of the immortals, i.e., Heaven, స్వర్గము. త్రిదివము tri-divamu. n. Heaven. త్రిదివుడు tri-divuḍu. n. A god. Padma. ix. 86. త్రిదివేశుడు a god; or, Indra, as lord of the gods. త్రిదోషము tri-dōshamu. n. Disorder of the three humours, viz., phlegm, bile, and strabilis. వాత పిత్త శ్లేష్మములు. త్రినేత్రుడు or త్రిలోచనుడు tri-nētruḍu. n. The three eyed god, that is, Siva. త్రివథగ tri-patha-ga. n. The stream which runs in 'three beds,' i.e., the Ganges, fabled to flow through heaven, earth and hades. త్రిపుమడ్రము tri-punḍramu. n. The triple mark worn across the forehead by Saivites. (ఊర్ధ్వపుండ్రము is the upright line worn by the Vaishnavites.) త్రిపుట tri-puṭa. n. The name of a certain musical metre. ఏడక్షరములకాలము. త్రిపురము tri-puramu. n. The name of a district of Bengal (now called Tipperah) called after its kind, Tripura, a giant who was vanquished by Siva: who, as 'slayer of Tripura' derives hence the name త్రిపురజిత్తు, త్రిపుసూదనుడు, త్రిపురాంతకుడు, త్రిపురారి, &c. త్రిపురదేవి or త్రిపురసుందరి the Bonạ Dea, Venus. త్రిఫలము tri-phalamu. n. The three species of myrobalan; the Phyllanthea emblica కరక, Terminalia chebula తాడి, and Terminalia speciosa ఉసిరిక.

(p. 625) dvajamu dhvajamu. [Skt.] n. A flag or banner. టెక్కెము. A flagstaff. టెక్కేపు కంబము. A mark, a sign or symbol. గురుతు. The male organ of generation. లింగము, మగగురి. బర్హధ్వజి she whose sign is the peacock, i.e., Pārvati. ధ్వజస్థంభము a pillar or mast erected before a temple, having a vertical wooden frame of bars at the top to represent a flag. ధ్వజారోహణము a certain rite at the commencement of a festival when the flag is hoisted. ధ్వజిని dhvajini. n. An army. సేన.

(p. 631) naḍumu naḍumu. [Tel.] n. The middle, the waist, or loins. కాను. The middle portion మధ్యబాగము. నడుముకట్టుకొను naḍumu-kaṭṭu-konu. v. n. To undertake, to make oneself ready. To gird up the loins, to be ready. సిద్ధపడు. To take a vow of chastity, నడుమంతరము or నడుమంత్రము naḍu-mantaramu. (నడుము+అంతరము.) adj. Extraordinary, unprecedented, unthought of, as a windfall. n. The waist, కొను. An interval, మధ్యకాలము. adj. Middling, neither here nor there. నడమంతరపేరు an alias. నడమంతరపు ఐశ్వర్యమునకును వరము మీది పుండునకును చురుకు అధికము those who have recently become rich and an ulcer on a nerve give great trouble. నడమంతరముగా nada-mantaramu-gā. adv. Unexpectedly. నడుచొచ్చు naḍu-ṭsoṭsṭsu. v. n. To come in the middle, to interpose, నడుమ ప్రవేశించు. నడుదింపు naḍu-dimpu. n. The flesh in the loins. మాంసవిశేషము. నడుములో చెక్కు to pocket, because they stick a handkerchief, &c., in at the girdle. నడుముపడిన gone in the loins, broken down, debilitated. నడుము వదిలినది there was an emission of semen. నడుమ or నడమ naḍuma. adj. Middle, centrical. నడుమును. adj. and postp. In the middle, meanwhile,. through, between. ఈ నడుమ presently: (also) lately. ఆ నడుమ meantime. నడమ వచ్చినారు they came between or interposed; they came as messengers or representatives. నడుమ వచ్చినవానికి ఇంత అధికారమా is an interloper to presume thus? నడుమ మాట్లాడు to interrupt one while speaking: or to intercede, to mediate. నడాన or నడుమను nadāna. adv. In the middle; midway.

(p. 642) nāṭu nāṭu. [Tel.] v. n. &a. To plant or fix. గుచ్చు. To impress, as with the nails. To prick or pierce, గుచ్చుకొను. To transfix. నైజగుణంబులు నాటంగచెప్పి they represented it most impressively. నా మాట నీ చెవికి నాటచెప్పెద my words shall pierce thine ears. నా మాటలు వానిచెవిలో ములుకులైనాటెను my words pierced his heart. n. Planting, నాటుట. A wound, (G. X. 152.) a dent: the first or preparatory step, as a chop before striking with the axe. The dent sometimes made on a coin in proving it, called also సూలాకి; hence the నాట్లవట్టము is the loss on shroffage. నాటువేసిన rooted. నాటుకొను nāṭu-konu. v. n. To be fixed in anything. నెలకొను. నాలుకొలుపు to cause to be fixed, నెలకొలుపు. నాటనము or నాట్నము nāṭanamu. n. Planting little sprouts or young plants, నారులోనగువానిని నాటుట. నాటించు nāṭinṭsu. v. a. To plant, fix firmly.

(p. 645) nāraduḍu nāra-duḍu. [Skt.] n. Nārada, the Mercury or Momus of the Hindu Olympus, represented as the inventor of the lute, and messenger and newsmonger of the gods. A roaming tell-tale, a makebate. నారదసంగీతము divine music. నారదత్వము nāradatvamu. n. A jeering makebate temper like that of Narada or Mercury. A. ii. 36.

(p. 665) nis nis. [Skt. a form of నిర్.] A negative prefix like un or in. నిస్త్రాణ nis-trāṇa. n. Weakness. నిస్పృహము nis-pṛihamu. adj. Hopeless. అశలేని. నిస్పృహత్వము nis-pṛihatvamu. n. The being without any wish or hope. Indifference, listlessness. Philosophy. నిస్పృహుడు nis-prihuḍu. n. A philosopher, a calm observer, a man of an equable mind unaffected by ordinary events. adj. Indifferent or listless. నిస్సంగుడు nis-sajuḍu. n. One who has quitted his family. A recluse, hermit. నిస్సంతు nis-santu. adj. Without children or offspring, without an heir. సంతానములేని. అతని వంశము నిస్సంతు అయిపోయినది his family is without a representative, is extinct. నిస్సందేహము or నిస్సంశయము nis-san-dēhamu. adj. Undoubted. n. The absence of doubt. నిస్సత్తువ nis-sattuva. n. Weakness, a want of nerve, debility. Poorness of soil. ఆశక్తి. బలహీనత. నిస్తంత్రము nis-tantramu. adj. Easy, deliberate. నిస్తండ్రము nis-tandramu. adj. Unwearied, in-defatigable. నిస్తరించు nis-tarinṭsu. v. a. To cross safely. చక్కగా దాటు. To succeed, get through, be delivered. కడతేరు. విస్తరణము or విస్తారము nis-taraṇamu. n. Crossing. దాటుట. నిస్తారకుడు nis-tāra-kuḍu. n. A deliverer, redeemer. కడతేర్చువాడు. నిస్సరణము nis-saraṇamu. n.
