(p. 17) aṃśamu amṣamu. [Skt] n. A share, part, portion, a fraction; the denominator of one; a degree of latitude or longitude (Geog.); a subject భాగము, విషయము, దేవుని యంశమున పుట్టినవాడు he who is born from a portion of the deity, he who is of divine origin; అంశపురుషుడు a fortunate man, a man of talent or parts. వర్ణనాంశము a descriptive part or passage in a poem. ఈ అంశము నాకు తెలుసును I am acquainted with this subject. ఈ అంశములో in this respect. వాడు అన్ని అంశములు తెలిసినవాడు he knows every thing. అంశచక్రము a table consulted by astrologers in casting nativities, an astrological diagram for ascertaining the degree of the sun in any sign. దశాంసము the tenth part; అంశసవరణ = reduction of fractions; అంశనీయము or అంశ్యము = that which is divisible.

(p. 25) agauravamu a-gauravamu. [Skt.] n. Disregard, contempt. వారిని అగౌరవము చేసినాడు he did not show them respect.

(p. 40) atithi atithi. [Skt. a=not, and tiḍhi -- day; hence lit. one who comes unexpectedly;] n. A guest, a stranger. పరగృహగతుడు. అతిథిదర్మము title to hospitality. అతిథిపూజ or అతిథిసత్కారము welcoming a guest, showing respect to a guest by ministering to his wants. అతిథిసేవ attention paid to a guest, hospitality.

(p. 42) atyantamu aty-antamu. [Skt.] adj. Excesssive, very much. మిక్కిలి విశేషమైన. అత్యంత వినయపూర్వకముగా with profound respect. అత్యంతసుకుమారము very delicate. అత్యంతాభావము entire non-existence.

(p. 45) adḥkariñcu adhah-karinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To treat with disrespect. తక్కువపరుచు; క్రిందుపరుచు. అధఃకారము n. The act of looking down on one. హీనపరచడము. అధఃకారి adhakāri. [Skt.] n. He who defies or outrivals. తక్కువపరిచేవాడు.

(p. 44) addu addu. [Tel.] v. a. To press gently. To dip, to print with colours. ముంచు. 'ఇద్ధంబుగా పాలనద్దుము నీటనద్దుము మాకింకనన్యధా లేదు.' BD. v. 319 సిరా అద్దుము blot the ink. కండ్లను అద్దుకొనుము press it to the eyes as a mark of respect. అద్దుముద్దు n. Sport, play. బిడ్డ యొక్క చేష్టలు. ఆ బిడ్డ యొక్క అద్దు ముద్దు చూడక చచ్చినాడు he died without seeing the child play.

(p. 51) anādaramu or అనాదరణ an-ādaramu. [Skt.] n. Disrespect, disregard, contempt, తిరస్కారము, అలక్ష్యము. అనాదరణచేయు disregard, to look with indifference, to despise.

(p. 65) appa appa. [Tel. cognate with Heb. Abba, father.] n. Papa, a father, An elder sister. తండ్రి, అక్క (This word is frequently added to the proper names of men; as a term of common respect; thus రంగప్ప, రామప్ప.)

(p. 74) amaryāda a-maryāda. [Skt.] n. Incivility, disrespect; dishonour. అగౌరవము.

(p. 83) arghamu arghamu. [Skt.] n. Price. Adoration, worship, respect. మూల్యము, వెల, పూజ. అర్ఘబలాబలము the cheapness or dearness of commodities. అర్ఘ్యము arghyamu. n. A respectful oblation to gods or to venerable men, of rice, darbha-grass, flowers, &c., with water, or of water only. పూజార్థార్హజలాదికము. అర్ఘ్యపాత్ర a vessel for this. అర్ఘ్యపాద్యాదులు the same with the addition of water for the feet, &c అష్టార్ఘ్యములు the 8 kinds of offerings, viz., పెరుగు, తేనె, నెయ్యి, అక్షతలు, గరిక, నువ్వులు, దర్భ, పువ్వులు. అర్ఘ్యము adj. Venerable, deserving worship. పూజకు తగిన, యోగ్యమైన.

(p. 86) alaghu a-laghu. [Skt.] adj. Not light. Heavy, large, big. భారమైన. అలఘువు a-laghuvu. n. A long vowel; a sound equal to two mātras or simple sounds. గురువు, గుర్వక్షరము. అలఘుడు a-laghuḍu. n. A man of weight. A respectable man. దొడ్డవాడు, గొప్పవాడు.

(p. 94) avamāniñcu ava-māninṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To dishonour, to disgrace. అగౌరవము చేయు. అవమానము ava-mānamu. [Skt.] n. Disgrace, dishonour, disrespect. అమర్యాద. వానికి అవమానము అయినది or వాడు అవమానపడినాడు he was disgraced or treated with disrespect. అవమానితము adj. Despised, disrespected. పరిభూతమైన. అవమానితుడు ava-mānituḍu. [Skt.] n. He who is disgraced or treated with disrespect. పరిభూతుడు.

(p. 96) avahēḷanamu ava-hēḷanamu. [Skt.] n. Contempt, disrespect, disregard. తిరస్కారము, అవమానము.

(p. 98) avva avva. [Tel.] n. A grandmother, a mother: any old or respectable woman. జననీజనకులతల్లి, తల్లి, పూజ్యురాలు. అవ్వపండు avva-paṇḍu. n. A certain scarlet fruit called in Tamil చౌరిప్పమ్ శౌ?Eరిపండు శౌరిపండు. It is boiled in oil to anoint the head. అవ్వరో interj. O madam!

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.
