(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 3) aṅkilipaḍu ankili-paḍu. v. i. To obstruct to come in the way. అడ్డుపడు. అంకిలిపెట్టు v. t. To prevent.

(p. 4) aṅgaḍi angadi. [Drav.] (Gen. అంగటి Loc. అంగట, plu. అంగళ్లు) n. A shop. అంగడిపెట్టు to open a shop. అంగళ్లవాడ range of shops. అంగట పోకార్చి selling in the shop. అంగడివీధి a market place. ఆ సంగతిని అంగడిలో పెట్టినాడు he revealed or exposed the matter.

(p. 6) añcitamu anchitamu. [Skt.] a. Worshipped, revered. అంచితముగా adv. Worshipfully, admirably.

(p. 106) aka āka. [Tel. from ఆగు to stop.] n. A check, an order, a command. Custody. అడ్డగింపు, ఆజ్ఞ, చెర. 'కికురించిరిచ్చిపుచ్చుకొను చోటులవారలాకకులోనుగాకప్పులీక.' Swa. iii. 163. ఆకట్టు (ఆక+కట్టు) ākaṭṭu. v. i. To prevent, hinder, check. నిరోధించు. ఆకపడు āka-paḍu. v. i. To intervene, to interpose. అడ్డిపడు, రామా: కిష్కిం: ఆకపెట్టు āka-peṭṭụ. v. t. To prevent.

(p. 18) akaṭavikaṭamu akaṭa-vikaṭamu. [Tel.] adj. Adverse, contrary, awkard, inverted, contrariwise. తారుమారైన, విరుద్ధమైన, ప్రతికూలమైన, అకటవికటమైన మాట an incoherent speech, a prevarication, అకటవికటపు మాటలాడుట to shuffle, prevaricate, అకటవికటమైన పని an awkward, confused or troublesome affair.

(p. 30) aṭa aṭa. [Tel.] adv. There. Then. Afterwards. అటకు పో go there. అటమున్ను previously, before that.

(p. 31) aṭakāyiñcu aṭakāyinṭsu. [H.] To prevent, stop, hinder, check. అటకావు [H.] Prevention, hindrance.

(p. 38) aḍḍamu or అడ్డమైన aḍḍamu. [Tel.] adj. Cross. నన్ను అడ్డమైన మాటలు ఆడినాడు he reviled me. అడ్డమైనకూళ్లు any food that comes to the hand. నాకు అడ్డమైనపని పెట్టుతున్నాడు he employs me in anything that comes to hand. వాడు అడ్డదోవలు తొక్కుచున్నాడు he goes the wrong way to work. అడ్డకట్ట aḍḍa-kaṭṭa. [Tel.] n. A dam or bank, an embankment. సేతువు, చేలకు నీళ్లు నిలిచేటందుకు కట్టిన గట్టు. అడ్డకత్తి aḍḍakatti. A broad sword. పట్టిసము. అడ్డకమ్మి aḍḍa-kammi. A cross piece, the cross selvage in cloth. అడ్డకర్ర aḍḍa-karra. A cross-piece of timber: an obstacle: a bar. విఘూతము. నా పనికి అడ్డకర్రలు వేయుచున్నాడు he throws difficulties in my way. See అడ్డము. అడ్డగోడ addagōḍa a cross-wall. అడ్డచాపు aḍḍa-tṣāpu. A cross beam. అడ్డవాసము. అడ్డతల aḍḍa-tala. A narrow projecting head: having a narrow fore head. నిడుపు తల. అడ్డదూలము aḍḍa-dūlamu. A cross beam. అడ్డదోవ aḍḍa-dōva. A crossway. అడ్డపలక aḍḍa-palaka. A cross plank. అడ్డపట్టె. aḍḍa-paṭṭe. A thick board drawn by two oxen used for smoothing a ploughed field after the grain is sown. మడిసమముచేసే మాను. అడ్డుపడు aḍḍa-paḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To interpose, to help; to obstruct, impede. విఘూతమగు, వారించు. నా పనికి అడ్డుపడ్డాడు he threw obstacles in my way. భార్యను కొట్టబోతే కొడుకు అడ్డుపడినాడు as he was going to strike his wife his son interposed. నేనడ్డపడకపోతే వాండ్లు వత్తురు had I not interposed they would have died. అడ్డపాటు aḍḍa-pāṭu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, obstruction. అడ్డి, విఘ్నము. అడ్డబాస aḍḍa-bāsa. n. A nose jewel. బులాకి. అడ్డబొట్టు aḍḍa-boṭṭu. A cross mark worn by the Hindus on their fore-head. అడ్డమాను aḍḍa-mānu. A cross bar. వాడు అడ్డవాట్లు వేస్తున్నాడు he throws impediments in the way.

(p. 44) adda adda. [from Skt. అర్థ] adj. Half. సగము. అద్దగోడ. a wall that serves as a screen. అర్థరూపాయి a half rupee. అద్దమణుగు a half maund. అద్దపావులా a two anna piece. అద్దమరేయి addama-rēyi. n. Midnight. అర్ధరాత్రము, నిశీధి 'అద్ద మరేయద్దాసరి.' A. vi. 10. In revenue phrase, అద్ద means an incomplete heap. Also, a stamp or seal. వట్టిముద్ర. అద్దలవాడు he who stamps or marks the salt heaps. A marker or stamper. Also, a salt manufacturer. ముద్ర మనిషి, ఉప్పు చేసేవాడు. అద్ద n. A dry measure, half of a 'sola.' A small heap of straw not yet thrashed. అర్థసోల, నూర్చకుండా వేసిన చిన్న కుప్ప.

(p. 49) ananvayamu an-anvayamu. [Skt.] n. Inconsistency, unconnectedness, incongruity. ఇమడమి, అసాంగత్యము, పొసగమి, విరుద్ధము. adj. Unconnected, irrevelant. అసంబంధమైన, సంగతమైన, పొసగని, ఇమడని.

(p. 67) abbu abbu. [Tel.] v. n. To come into one's enjoyment, possession, or reach; be obtained or gained. చిక్కు, దొరుకు, లభించు. ప్రాప్తించు. ఇది వీనికి అబ్బేసొమ్ము కాదు the luck is too good to last; that is, he is not worthy of such good fortune, and it will not stick by him. దీన్ని వానికి అబ్బనియ్యరు they will prevent his getting it.

(p. 68) abvābu abvābu. [H.] n. (Lit. Doors, chapters.) Miscellaneous revenue accounts. 'The usual heads in Revenue accounts are Mal and Abwab. The Mal or Regular revenue is collected on land and customs, including taxes on liquors, &c The Abwab, or Miscellaneous includes the difference of exchange (often considerable) between that of the market and the fixed rate at which the revenue of the district is paid, casual aid or support of the Government officers, fees to the shroff, and contributions to various feasts.'
