(p. 974) mānu mānu. [Tel.] v. a. and v. n. To forbear, refrain, abstain, or desist from, leave off, విడుచు. To heal, be healed or cured, కుదురు. To be laid aside or left off, to be got rid of. చెప్పకమానెను he stopped without saying it. అక్కడ ఉండకమానెరు they will not fail to be there. చేయకేలమానను how should he fail to do this? చేయక మానెను he desisted from doing so. This verb implies a general negative as రాకమానెను he did not come. చొరకమానెను he did not enter. కొట్టితే కరవకమానునా if you strike it, will it not bite you? చెప్పినాడో మానినాడో whether he spoke or not: lit whether he spoke or whether he forbore. అక్కడ అది లేకుంటే మానెను I don't care if it is not there. రాయివేతునా మానుదునా shall I throw the stone or no? ఉదహిరించినా మానినా whether they mentioned it or no. చింత మానుము abandon your grief. It is even applied impersonally to mean 'Never mind,' పరవాలేదు, as పట్టలుతడిసినా మానె it does not matter if the clothes got wet. ఇయ్యకపోతే మానె if you won't give it, never mind, no matter, it is of no consequence. మానిపించు or మాన్పించు māni-pinṭsu. v. a. To cause to stop; to prevent. To cause to heal. అతని ప్రయాణము మాన్పితిని I made him stop his journey. మానుకొను mānu-konu. v. a. To relinquish, forego, resign, lay aside, desist from, abstain from. పని మానుకొను to give up or resign an employment. మానుచు, మాన్చు, మానుపు or మాన్పు mānuṭsu. v. a. To stop, heal, cure. మానజేయు. మానిపోయిన పుండ్లను మళ్లీ రేపుట to stir up old sores, to revive old quarrels. మామా māmā. [Tel. short for మానుమామానుమా.] v. imp. Oh! please give up (anger, &c.)

(p. 1059) r ra. [Tel. short for రమ్ము.] In addressing intimate friends or very low class persons, this is used as a suffix; thus, ఏమిర, ఎందుకుర, ఏమిరా, ఎందుకురా. In ancient Telugu, when it was under influence of the Kanarese literature the letter ఱ was used, but it is now obsolete. It is called శకటరేఫము, అలఘురేఫము or బండి 'ర' while the ర is called మంచి 'ర' or లఘురేఫము. The ర is never used in Sanskrit words. It is said to have been pronounced hard, and to have had the force of two ర sounds; so that in ఱ్ఱ there are supposed to be four R sounds included, which is absurd on the face of it. According to the ancient spelling తరచు means to churn, తఱుచు thick. పెర is a bee hive, పెర other, strange.పెరుగు is curd, పెరుగు to curd, పెఱుగు to grow. వేరు means a root, వేఱు different. మరుగు means to hide, మఱుగు too boil. In modern Telugu the ఱ is unknown and thus both sets of words are splet alike. The ancient poets distinguished these sounds, never allowing ర to rhyme with ఱ. Modern Telugu poets such as the translator of the Bhagavata disregard this distinction. In recent years attempts have been made to revive the use of this obsolete letter, but without success.

(p. 1274) sañjīvi sanjīvi. [Skt.] n. That which gives or revives life, జీవమును కలుగజేయునది. A medicine which prolongs life. ఆయుస్సును వృద్ధిచేయుమందు. సంజీవకరణి sanjīva-karaṇi. n. A restorative, a cordial, a reviving medicine, a medicine tending to prolong life, or of sufficient efficacy to raise the dead. మళ్లీ బ్రతికించేమందు. 'ఘనతరసంజీవకరణి మోపగను వనితదిగ్గునలేచివచ్చినజూచి.' Sar. D. 675. 'స్థిరమైనయా యౌషధీశైల మెక్కి, కరమొప్పసంజీవకరణి విశల్య, కరణియు సంధానకరణి సౌవర్ణ, కరణినానాలు గౌషధములుగలువు.' DRY. 1504. సంజీవనము san-jīvanamu. adj. Animating, bringing to life. బ్రతికించే.
