(p. 13) antyamu antyamu. [Skt.] adj. Final, last, ultimate, concluding. కడపటి. అంత్యనియమము rhyme, the last syllables corresponding. అంత్యదశ the last con dition, i. e., death. అంత్యధనము the last member of an arithmetical series. అంత్యమూలము in arith: the last or greatest root in the square. అంత్యకాలము last time, the time of one's end. అంత్యకులుడు or అంత్యజుడు n. A pariah. మాలవాడు.

(p. 40) ati ati. [Skt. prefix.] Over, beyond, exceeding, very much; extreme, vast. అధికమైన. A rhyme says అతిదానాద్ధతఃకర్ణః , అతిలోభాత్సుయోధనః, అతికామాద్ధశగ్రీవః, అతి సర్వత్సవర్జయేత్. ఎందుకును అతి కారాదు excess is always hurtful.

(p. 178) ṛ The vowel Ri or Ru like ri in trick or ru in fruit; sometimes wrongly written రు. The vowels ఋ and ఋ in Prosody rhyme to ఇ and ఈ, never to ఉ, ఊ and ఓ.

(p. 821) pōlu pōlu. [Tel.] v. n. To be fit or agreeable. ఒప్పు, తగియుండు. To be proper, యుక్తమగు. To be possible, శక్యమగు. This word is added to infinitives. చేయబోలునె can it be done? The neg. is పోలదు; thus, అట్లా చేయపోలదు or తగదు it is not proper to do so. ఉండబోలును perhaps they are there, ఉన్నవేమో. 'తెగువయదేవేంద్రపదవియనదగు బుద్ధిజనింపబోలుతరుణీనీకున్.' H. i. 140. v. a. To resemble, to be like, సరిపోలు. n. Resemblance, similarity, సామ్యము. పోలుపొందులేకుండా మాట్లాడు or తలా తోకలేకుండా మాట్లాడు to talk without rhyme or reason. పోలె pōle. adv. Like. రామునిపోలె like Rama. పోలమి pōl-ami. n. Dissimilarity, unlikeness. పోలించు, పోలుచు or పోల్చు pōlinṭsu. v. a. To compare, or liken. పోలజేయు. పోలిక, పోలికి or పోల్కి pōlika. n. Resemblance, likeness.

(p. 848) prāsamu prāsamu. [Skt.] n. The second letter of each verse, the rhyming letter, పద్యపాదమున రెండవ అక్షరము. Alliteration, a rhyme. A barbed dart or lance, ఈటె.

(p. 1026) melayu or మెలియు melayu. [Tel.] v. n. To mix, be united. To be entangled or twisted, పెనగు. This verb is only used as a rhyme in the phrase కలసిమెలసి mixing and mingling. Also, same as మెలగు (q. v.) మెలి, మెలిక or మెలికె meli. n. A turn, a twist. పురి, పెన. మెలిగొను or మెలిపడు meli-gonu. v. n. To be twisted, to get twisted. పురియెక్కు. మెలపెట్టు or మెలివేయు meli-peṭṭu. v. a. To twist, పురిపెట్టు. మెలుచు meluṭsu. v. a. To twist, to cause to be twisted, మెలియజేయు, పెనచు. మెలుములు melumulu. [Tel.] n. Certain ropes used in a కపిల pump. తాళ్లు. మెలుసు melusu. n. A twist మెలిక.

(p. 1053) yati yati. [Skt.] n. A sage whose passions are completely under subjection; a hermit or religious mendicant. సన్యాసి, జితేంద్రియుడు. A syllable rhyming to the initial of a line of poetry. పద్యవిశ్రమస్థానము, తాళ ప్రాణము. See ప్రాసము.

(p. 1059) r ra. [Tel. short for రమ్ము.] In addressing intimate friends or very low class persons, this is used as a suffix; thus, ఏమిర, ఎందుకుర, ఏమిరా, ఎందుకురా. In ancient Telugu, when it was under influence of the Kanarese literature the letter ఱ was used, but it is now obsolete. It is called శకటరేఫము, అలఘురేఫము or బండి 'ర' while the ర is called మంచి 'ర' or లఘురేఫము. The ర is never used in Sanskrit words. It is said to have been pronounced hard, and to have had the force of two ర sounds; so that in ఱ్ఱ there are supposed to be four R sounds included, which is absurd on the face of it. According to the ancient spelling తరచు means to churn, తఱుచు thick. పెర is a bee hive, పెర other, strange.పెరుగు is curd, పెరుగు to curd, పెఱుగు to grow. వేరు means a root, వేఱు different. మరుగు means to hide, మఱుగు too boil. In modern Telugu the ఱ is unknown and thus both sets of words are splet alike. The ancient poets distinguished these sounds, never allowing ర to rhyme with ఱ. Modern Telugu poets such as the translator of the Bhagavata disregard this distinction. In recent years attempts have been made to revive the use of this obsolete letter, but without success.

(p. 1125) vaḍi vaḍi. [Tel.] n. Quickness, briskness, celerity, rapidity; sharpness, violence. శీఘ్రము. వేగము. Prowess, courage. శౌర్యము, క్షౌత్రము. Time, కాలము as in ఇంచుకనడి. కొంతవడి. పెద్దవడి. The twist of a cord. దారముపిరి. పురిబిగువు, పురిబిగువునపడుచిక్కు. (In prosody) rhyming syllables. కవిత్వమందయతి, పద్యయతి. plural వళ్లు. వడికాడు vaḍi-kāḍu.n. A quick or brave man. వేగముకలవాడు. శౌర్యవంతుడు. వడిగలతనము courage, bravery, వడిగలవానితనము, శౌర్యము. వడికొలుపు vaḍi-kolupu. v. a. To twist. మెలిపెట్టు, 'మొలకమీసలువడిగొల్పుమురువు నేర్చె.' T. ii. 73. To hasten, to cause to be quick. వేగముకలుగునట్లుచేయు. వడిగొను vaḍi-gonu. v. n. To become twisted, మెలిపడు. To be fast, వేగముకలుగు. వడిగల vaḍi-gala. adj. Quick, brisk, violent, clever, brave, వేగముగల, శూరత్వముగల. వాడు మంచివడి గలవాడు he is very quick or clever. adv. Quickly, freshly, త్వరగా, పురిగొని. 'పడుచులేచుచుడు గచువడిగొంచొదవెడుకినుకల గడుబెట్టిదముగ.' M. V. ii. 348. వడిపడు vaḍi-paḍu. v. n. To be troubled, afflicted, oppressed; to toil. వడివెట్టు or వడివేయు vaḍi-peṭṭu. v. a. To twist. మెలిపెట్టు, నులుము. 'తే గీ అలుకచేనుండబుగ్గలునులిచితిట్టి తొడలువడిపెట్టి కోదండమమరగట్టి రెట్టతెగగట్టి.' H. ii. 180. To trouble, annoy, persecute. బాధపెట్టు. వడిసుడి vaḍi-suḍi. n. A whirlpool. ఆవర్తము.

(p. 1142) vaḷi vāli. [Skt.] n. A fold of the skin or fat forming lines across the belly over the navel. కడుపుమీదిముడత, శరీరపుముడత. Any fold, ముడుత. A rhyming letter. యత్యక్షరము. 'వళితరంగములుపొక్కిలిసుళ్లు.' N. ii. 284. వళులు vaḷulu. n. plu. Folds, ముడుతలు. Goods, సరుకులు. 'మంచివళులకు వెలబొసగించువేళ.' S. iii. 46.

(p. 1192) viśramamu or విశ్రామము vi-ṣramamu. [Skt.] n. Rest, repose, cessation from fatigue or work. విశ్రాంతి, ఊరట. In Telugu verse, it denotes a certain kind of rhyme. ఛందస్సులోయతి, పద్యవిరామము. విశ్రమించు vi-ṣraminṭsu. v. n. To rest, repose, or refresh oneself. అలయికతీర్చుకొను, ఊరడిల్లు, విశ్రమింపజేయు vi-ṣramimpa-jēyu. v. a. To place, lay, పరుండబెట్టు. 'వికృత కృష్ణాజనముపయిన్ విశ్రమింపజేసి.' Jaimini. Bh. vi. 93. విశ్రాంతము vi-ṣrāntamu. adj. Rested, reposed, refreshed after fatigue, శ్రమవిరతము, అలయికతీర్చుకోబడిన, ఊరడిల్లిన, విశ్రాంతి vi-ṣrānti. n. Rest, repose, refreshment. ఊరట, అలయికతీర్చుకోనడము. Termination. విరామము, అవసానము. 'కల్పవిశ్రాంతి.' T. iv. 183.) the end of the world. 'తద్విలసన్నిర్ఘరవారి దీర్ఘికలలో విశ్రాంతిగావించి.' Vish. ii. 220.,

(p. 1307) sarasamu sa-rasamu. [Skt.] adj. Juicy, tasty. Sapid, soft. Good, virtuous. Charming, agreeable, pleasant, elegant, sweet. Jocose, funny, merry. Easy, cheap. రసయుక్తమైన, సుస్వాదువైన, అందమైన, మనోహరమైన, పరిహాసమైన, లలితమైన; చవుకైన. సరసోక్తి a jocose; amusing or agreeable expression. n. A joke, jest, fun, merriment, amusement, sweetness, pleasantry. Cheapness. పరిహాసము, ఉల్లాసము, వినోదము, సారస్యము; చవుక. సరసమాడు to make jokes, to jest. సరిసమాడవద్దు do not jest. సరసము విరసమవును a jest may turn to a strife. సరససల్లాపము jocose talk. ఇప్పుడు బంగారు సరసముగానున్నది now gold is cheap. చెయ్యి సరసము bear's play, a scuffle. 'సరసోరుకాండముల్ సౌకర్యమేపార.' Ila. i. 2. సరసత sa-rasasa. n. Delicacy, taste, sweetness, elegance, brilliancy of thought, beauty of composition. మాధుర్యము, సారస్యము, లాలిత్యము. ఆ సద్యముయొక్క సరసత the sweetness of the verse. 'మేఘరాజులు సరసతమీర దమ్ము సరళవిద్యుల్లతాదీర్ఘతరకటాక్ష.' R. vi. 9. సరసత, అనగా సజలత్వము, లాలిత్యము. సరసముగా sa-rasamu-gā. adv. Jocosely, in joke, humorously. Sweetly, merrily. Cheaply. పరిహాసముగా, సారస్యముగా, ఉల్లాసముగా, చవుకగా. వెల సరసముగానుండినందున as the price was low. సరసయతి sa-rasayati. n. A rhyme not quite precise, but elegant. A gentleman, a man of good taste, an amiable or well behaved man; one easy of access, రసికుడు. సరసురాలు sa-rasu-r-āalu. n. A lady, a woman of elegant manners. రసికురాలు.

(p. 1373) sva sva. [Skt.] adj. Own, self, individual. ఆత్మీయమైన. తన. స్వకాయకష్టము bodily labour, individual exertions, స్వకపోలకల్పితము lit. invented in one's own head; original, not borrowed, as an idea, apocryphal, as a story made out of one's own head, అబద్ధమైన, లేనిపోని, స్వకార్యము one's own affair, one's onw peculiar duty, తనపని, స్వకార్యధురంధరుడు a selfish man. one's own family, dependents, relations, people, friends. బంధువులు, పంజనము, స్వజనుడు a relation, a friend, బంధువు. జ్ఞాతి. సగోత్రుడు, స్నేహితుడు స్వజాతి one's own class or nation, one's own kind, తనకులము. స్వజాతివైరి an enemy of one's kind. 'స్వదేశస్థుడు a fellow countryman, a native, మనదేశపువాడు. స్వధర్మము one's own particular duty, a natural or peculiar characteristic, a peculiarity. తాను చేయవలసినకార్యము, స్వభావము. స్వధర్మత్యాగము apostacy, abandonment of caste or faith, జాతిభ్రంశము. స్వబుద్ధి one's own desire, wish, or will. స్వబుద్ధిగా or స్వబుద్ధిచేత voluntarily, of one's own accord. స్వవశీకృతము taken into his own hands. తన స్వాధీనము చేసుకోబడ్డ. స్వశక్తి one's own power. తన సామర్థ్యము, వానికి స్వశక్తిలేదు he has no power of his own, or in himself. స్వాధికారము one's own right or title, dominion, తన అధికారము, తన ప్రభుత్వము. స్వాధిక్యము self importance, pride, arrogance, తన గొప్పతనము, గర్వము, స్వాధిష్ఠానము the second of the six regions of the human body, the upper part of the abdomen. చక్రవిశేషము.
