(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 5) aṅgamu angamu. [Skt.] n. The body, a limb, member, part, division or branch. అంగవంచకము = ఉపాయము, సహాయము, దేశకాలవిభజనము, ఆపదకు ప్రతిక్రియ, కార్యసిద్ధి. అద్భుతాంగులు beings having wondrous forms. అష్టాంగములు = the eight forms or stages of meditation, i. e, యమము, నియమము, ప్రాణాయామము, ప్రత్యాహారము, ధ్యానము, ధారణ, మననము, సమాధి. చతురంగములు the four divisions of an army, i. e., రథములు, ఏనుగులు, గుర్రములు, బంటులు. పంచాంగము the Indian calendar giving particulars of each day, as తిథి, వారము, నక్షత్రము, యోగము, కరణము. రాజ్యాంగములు the various departments of Government. షడంగములు or వేదాంగములు the six sciences dependent on the Vedas. i. e., శిక్ష, కల్పము, వ్యాకరణము, నిరుక్తము, జ్యోతిషము, ఛందస్సు. సప్తాంగములు = the seven constituents of a Government. స్వామి, అమాత్యుడు, సుహృత్తు, కోశము, రాష్ట్రము, దుర్గము, బలము. సాష్టాంగ ప్రణామము prostrate homage, touching the ground with eight members of the body, i. e., eyes or chest and forehead, hands, knees and feet.

(p. 4) aṅgavradakṣiṇamu anga-pradakshiṇamu. [Skt.] n. Rolling the body like a log to the right for a distance or round a temple, as a religious vow or penance. ప్రార్థన చేసికొనువాడు గుడి మొదలగువాటికి ప్రదక్షిణముగా దొరలుట.

(p. 10) antaratāmara antara-tāmara. [Tel.] n. A water plant, without any root to the ground, swimming upon the surface of the lakes, &c. Pistia stratiotes. Menyanthes cristata (Roxb). ఆకాశతామర. అంతరతామర also means the itch. గజ్జి.

(p. 12) antarvāhini antarvāhini. [Skt.] n. a concealed river, which runs under ground. నది యిక్కడ అంతర్వాహిని అయినది here the river is lost in the earth.

(p. 12) antaśayya antasayya. [Skt.] n. The last bed or the bed of death; death; the burying or burning ground.

(p. 19) akāraṇamu a-kāraṇamu. [Skt.] adj. Groundless, causeless. నిర్హేతుకమైన. అకారణముగా without a reason. అకారణోత్పన్నము produced spontaneously. అకారత్ (H. incorrect form of అకారణముగా) without cause నిర్హేతుకముగా, ఊరక.

(p. 48) adhvaramu adhvaramu. [Skt.] A sacrifice. యజ్ఞము. 'అధ్వరవైకల్య మరయుచుంచు బ్రహ్మరాక్షసకోటి.' భాస్క: రామా: బాల: 99. అధ్వర్యుడు n. A Bramin versed in the Yajur Veda; యజుర్వేదవేత్త; the officiating priest at a sacrifice whose duty it is to measure the ground, build the altar, prepare the sacrificial vessels, fetch wood and water, light the fire, bring and immolate the animal. For a description of the sacrifice, vide భాస్కరామా. బాల 114. అధ్వర్యవేదము = యజుర్వేదము.

(p. 52) animittamu a-nimittamu. [Skt.] n. Having no adequate cause, groundless.

(p. 66) apradakṣiṇamu a-pradakshiṇamu. [Skt.] n. Walking round (a corpse. &c.) presenting the left hand towards it. ఎడమచెయితట్టుగా చుట్టును తిరగడము.

(p. 83) argaḷamu argaḷamu. [Skt.] n. A round wooden bar or bolt for a door. గడియమాను. (Metaphorically) an impediment, hindrance, restraint. విఘ్నము, అభ్యంతరము. అనర్గళముగా irresistibly. వాని అధికారము అవర్గళముగా జరుగుచున్నది his authority is unrestricted.

(p. 92) avaṭamu avaṭamu. [Skt.] n. A hole in the ground, a cavity, a pit, a well. గొయ్యి, బొక్క, నుయ్యి. అవటువు avaṭuvu. [Skt.] n. The back of the neck. పెడతల, అనగా, మెడ వెనుకటి భాగము, ముచ్చిలిగుంట. 'ఉన్నమి తావటు విలభిహారంబుల బేరెంబులవారెనో యనన్.' Vasu. iv. 39. 'అవటుకచంబువాని.' A. vi. 23. టీ పెడ తలను మాత్రమే వెంట్రుకలు గలవానిని.

(p. 95) avaluntanamu ava-luṇṭhanamu. [Skt.] n. Rolling on the ground. పొరలడము అవలుంఠితము adj. Rolled on the ground, పొరలిన, నేలమీద దొర్లిన.

(p. 98) avyāpakamu a-vyāpakamu. [Skt.] adj. (In Logic.) Not spreading over the whole, not covering the whole. అవ్యాపకత్వము n. Non-comprehensiveness or generalisation. అవ్యాప్తము that which is not pervaded with. అవ్యాప్తి inadequate extent (of a definition) అవ్యాప్యము not covering the whole ground, not extending over the whole matter. అవ్యాప్యవృత్తి a category of limited application, a partial inference.

(p. 108) ākramiñcu ā-kraminṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To appropriate wrongfully, to encroach on, usurp. ఆక్రమణము ā-kramaṇamu. [Skt.] n. Surrounding, occupying, usurpation, filling (as smoke.) అక్రాంతిము ā-krāntamu. adj. Appropriated, seized. ఆక్రమింపబడినది. రాజాక్రాంతము seized by the king. ఆక్రాంతి ā-krānti. n. Filling, pervading, spreading through. (T. iv. 159.) వ్యాపకము.
