(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 58) anusariñcu anu-sarinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To follow, attend on hold to serve, court one's favour. అనువర్తించు. న్యాయమును అనుసరించక disregarding justice. అనుసరణము or అనుసారము anu-saraṇamu. [Skt.] n. Following, going after. Serving or attend ing on another. వెంబడించడము, అనువర్తించడము. అనుసారముగా adv. According to. ప్రకారముగా, అనుగుణ్యముగా. అనుసారణి anu-sāraṇi. [Skt.] n. Name of the second string of a lute. రెండోతంతి. అనుసారి n. A follower, a hanger on.

(p. 62) aparamu a-paramu. [Skt.] adj. Other, another, latter. అన్యము, ఉత్తరము. అపరక్రియలు n. Obsequies, funeral rites. దినవారాలు, కర్మాంతరము. అపరధాన్యములు or అపరాలు or అపరదినుసులు other kinds of grain, miscellaneous grains, all sorts of grain in pods, such as beans, &c. కాయధాన్యములు. One verse says. 'ఉత్తరే పూర్వసస్యాని అపరస్యానిరేవతౌ.' అపరనామము n. A second name. రెండో పేరు. అపర భాగము n. The hind part, వెనుకటి భాగము. అపరమంత్రములు n. Funeral prayers. అపరరాత్రి midnight, the latter half of the night. అపరలోకము another world. అపరవారధి the western ocean. వాడు పూర్వాపరములు చేయించగలడు he is qualified as priest to solemnize both the marriage and funeral rites. అపరాహ్నము or అపరాహ్ణము [Skt. అపర+అహ్నము.] n. The afternoon. రెండు ఝాములకు మీదికాలము.

(p. 66) apradhānamu a-pradhānamu. [Skt.] n. Unimportant, secondary. అప్రాధాన్యము a-prādhānyamu. [Skt.] n. Inferiority.

(p. 79) aravīsamu ara-vīsamu. [Tel.] n. The half of half an anna: the thirty-second part of unity. వీసములో సగము, ఒకటిలో ముప్పదిరెండో భాగము.

(p. 93) avadhariñcu ava-dharinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To favour with one's attention. To lend an ear, listen. To wear, put on. ఎచ్చరికపడు, విను, ఆలకించు, పెట్టుకొను. 'నవపింఛమయబూషలవధరించినటించు.' Swa. iii. 25. 'దుర్వసువంశం బునంబుట్టిననీ కిట్టిశో భనంబులే మద్భుతంబు లవధింవుము.' A pref. 21 అవధారు (the second person singular of the imperative of the verb. అవధరించు.) Oh Listen! O give ear! వినుము, ఆలకించుము, చిత్తగింపుము. 'కుబేర శంకరుల్ సరసనుగొల్వ మ్రొక్కులిడ స్వామిపరాక వధారుదేవ హెచ్చరిక యటంచుకంచుకులు.' N. i. 177.

(p. 118) āmrēḍiñcu āmrēḍinṭsu. [Skt.] v. t. To reiterate. Parij. v. 92. ఆమ్రేడితము āmrēḍitamu. adj. n. Reiterated; that which is repeated, that which is said twice. In gram. the second form of the repeated word. ద్విరుక్తము యొక్క పరరూపము.

(p. 133) indriyamu indriyamu. [Skt.] n. An organ of sense. జ్ఞానేంద్రియములు organs of perception, కర్మేంద్రియములు organs of action, and అంతరింద్రియములు the internal organs, the first includes the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and skin; the second, the organ of speech, or larynx, hand, foot, and the organs of generation. The last are మనసు the mind or organ of thought; బుద్ధి the organ of apprehension, అహంకారము the organ of self-knowledge or consciousness, and చిత్తము the heart or organ of feeling. ఇంద్రియువృత్తి the natural propensities. పంచేంద్రియములు the five organs of sense. పంచేంద్రియబద్ధుడు the sensual man, one who is a slave to his lusts.

(p. 138) iru iru. [Tel. cognate with రెండు.] adj. Two, both. ఇరుకెలకులు or ఇరుగడ both sides. ఇరుగోరు both shares, the whole, the gross crop. ఇరుచక్కి both sides. ఇరుచాళ్లదుక్కి a second ploughing. ఇరుతిగ or ఇత్తిగ six at dice: ఇరుతూము or ఇద్దుము two bushels. See తూము. ఇరుదెసల on both sides. ఇరునాలుగు twice four. ఇరువది or అరువై or అరవై twice ten. అరు on both sides, from side to side. ఇరువురు or ఇరుగురు both persons.

(p. 147) u u. [Tel. In common writing the vowel ఉ is shaped like ర. Compare with this the Kanarese ఉ and the Skt. ఉ and Eng. U and W, all having the same origin.] The vowel U, as sounded in put, as in oo foot. Many Telugu words use A or U at pleasure: particularly in the second syllable, thus: వాలుగ or వాలగ, పరచు or పరుచు, కరగు or వరస or వరుస, అటక or అటుక, తరము or తరుము, పలకరించు or పలుకరించు. If one of these forms does not occur we must look for the word the other spelling.

(p. 154) uttaramu uttaramu. [Skt.] adj. Secondary subsequent, following after. మీదిది. ఉత్తరభాగము the sequel or supplement. ఉత్తర రామాయణము the sequel to the Rāmāyaṇa. ఉత్తరసాధనము a further means. ఉత్తరసాక్షి a subscribing witness. సాక్షులగుటకు సాక్షి. ఉత్తర పక్షము the party who support the affirmative. Also, the affirmative proposition సిద్ధాంతము, the party in opposition being called ప్రతిపక్షము; the hypothesis or affirmative proposition, the second part or deduction from an argument. ఉత్తరార్థము the second half of an argument being the demonstration or exemplification of the పూర్వార్ధము or assertion first made. ఉత్తరోత్తర adv. Ever after, at any future time, hereafter, in course of time, gradually.

(p. 196) ēṭa ēṭa. [Tel.] adv. Annually, per annum (the abl. of ఏడు a year). రెండవయేట in the second year.

(p. 202) ai The vowel AI as the i in pride. The shape ఐ is used as an initial in the dictionary and in poetry, but elsewhere the Telugus use a secondary form అయి 'AYI' instead: The secondary form అయి ayi is used in poetry as a dissyllable, whenever the metre requires two short syllables for AI, which is one long. The Y in అయి is not pronounced. Thus అయిదు is not pronounced ayidu, but ai-du. In Telugu words there is this liberty of spelling; but the longer form ayi ought never to be used in words of Sanscrit origin.

(p. 212) orakaḍugu ora-kaḍugu. [Tel.] n. The water in which rice has been washed a second time.

(p. 260) kalpamu kalpamu. [Skt.] n. An age. A religious rule. A code or description of religious rites. A legend or pious tale. Thus; వరలక్ష్మీవ్రతకల్పము the legend or book regarding this observance బ్రహ్మకల్పము an age of Brahma equal to many millions of years. A series of publications as of a journal; as ప్రథమకల్పము first series, ద్వితీయకల్పము second series, &c. adj. That which equivalent to or that which is almost the same as. సమానమైనది. A word (like ish, in blackish, whitish) denoting similarity. ద్వీపకల్పము a peninsula. కరకల్పము like a hand. తటిత్కల్పమైన resembling lighting కల్పాంతము kalp-āntamu. n. The destruction of the world. The end of time. ప్రళయము. A Brahma's day. బ్రహ్మదినము. కల్పుడు kalpuṭn. One who is similar to, or equal to. విద్వత్కల్పుడు almost a scholar. అగ్నికల్పుడు he who is similar (in excellence) to the god of fire. M. XIII. ii. 332.
