(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 9) aṇḍamu anḍamu. [Skt.] n. An egg. A testicle. The world. The Universe.గుడ్డు, వృషణము, ప్రపంచము. అండాకర్షణము castration. అండాకారముగా having the shape of an egg, elliptical. అండాకృతి an ellipsis. అండవాయువు anḍa-vāyuvu. [Skt.] n. The disease orchitis (swelled testicle.) బుడ్డ అండవృద్ధి anḍa-vriddhi. [Skt.] n. The enlargement of the scrotum, hydrocele.

(p. 93) avatariñcu ava-tarinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To come down, to get down into. దిగు. To be born. పుట్టు. To appear, to put on a form, to become incarnate. అవతారమెత్తు. విష్ణువు మత్స్యముగా అవతరించెను Vishnu appeared as a fish. కృష్ణుడుగా అవతరించెను he was born as Krishna, or he appeared as Krishna or he put on the form of Krishna. అవతారము ava-tāramu. [Skt.] n. Incarnation, metamorphosis. The descent of a deity from heaven in a particular shape, the appearance of any deity upon earth, origin. దేవుడు రూపాంతరమును ఎత్తడము. విష్ణువు ఎత్తిన దశావతారములు the ten incarnations of Vishnu. రామావతారమెత్తినప్పుడు when he appeared on earth as Rama. వాడు గర్వావతారము he is pride incarnate, అది క్షామావతారము she is the genius of famine. (Shakesp. 2. Hen. IV. act. 3.) 'famine in the abstract, famine embodied, or personified.' అవతారపురుషుడు avatāra-purushuḍu. n. A god man, a divinē being in human form. మహాత్ముడు.

(p. 99) aśvatthamu aṣvatthamu. [Skt.] n. The holy fig tree (Ficus Religiosa.) పిప్పలము, రావిచెట్టు అశ్వత్థమునుంచి వెంపలి చెట్టుపర్యంతము from the cedar to the hyssop. అశ్వత్థ పత్రాకారమైన heart-shaped, shaped like a fig leaf. అశ్వత్థామ. a certain hero, the son of Drona.

(p. 108) ākṛti ākriti. [Skt.] n. Form, shape, figure, mien. ఆకారము.

(p. 112) āḍu āḍu. [Tel.] adj. Female. ఇవి ఆడుమాటలు these are a woman's words. ఆడుచందము āḍuṭsandamu. The female shape, feminine disguise. B. viii. 445. ఆడుమొర A woman's shriek. R. v. 207. ఆడుతోడు āḍu-tōḍu. [Tel.] A female companion. ఆడుది āḍudi. A woman. ఆడుబిడ్డ āḍu-biḍḍa. A little girl. The sister of a woman's husband. ఆడుముండ āḍu-muṇḍa. An abusive word for a woman: equivalent to slut, jade, wretch. ఆడువీడు woman's town, a place without brave men. See ఆడ adj.

(p. 122) ārukalu , ఆరుగలు, ఆరికెలు, ఆరిగలు or ఆళ్లు ārukalu. [Tel.] n. A sort of inferior grain. A species of grain, called paspalum frumentaceum. చోళ్లు is similar but oblong in shape.

(p. 139) iruva iruva. [Tel.] n. A sort of fish resembling a wedge in shape. Platycephalus. Rox. No. 46. 47.

(p. 143) īcu īṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To shrivel, wither, dry up. ఈచ īṭsa. adj. Lank, withered, misshapen. ఈచపడు or ఈచపోవు īṭsa-paḍu. To fall away, become lean. ఈచుక పోయిన lean, withered, flabby. శుష్కించిపోయిన.

(p. 147) u u. [Tel. In common writing the vowel ఉ is shaped like ర. Compare with this the Kanarese ఉ and the Skt. ఉ and Eng. U and W, all having the same origin.] The vowel U, as sounded in put, as in oo foot. Many Telugu words use A or U at pleasure: particularly in the second syllable, thus: వాలుగ or వాలగ, పరచు or పరుచు, కరగు or వరస or వరుస, అటక or అటుక, తరము or తరుము, పలకరించు or పలుకరించు. If one of these forms does not occur we must look for the word the other spelling.

(p. 167) ummetta or ఉమ్మెత ummetta. [Tel.] n. The thorn apple (Datura) a Indian night shade; దుత్తూరము. Ainslie. i. 442. తెల్ల ఉమ్మెత్త Datura meterl. నల్ల ఉమ్మెత్త Datura fastuosa. ఉమ్మెత్త పువ్వు గిన్నె a cup shaped like the flower of this plant. ఉమ్మెత్త పురుగు a clamorous cricket that lives on this plant.

(p. 169) uruvu or ఉర్వు uruvu. [Tel.] v. t. To get rid of. పరిహరించు. n. Form, shape. రూపము. ఉరువు adj. Great, big, large. గొప్ప. v. t. To flay. తోలు దోచుట. Also, same as ఉరుగొట్టు. టెంకాయ ఉరువుగా నుండే as large as a cocoanut. ఆ పని యింకా ఉరువు ఏర్పడ లేదు that work is as yet in embryo.

(p. 201) ērpaḍu ērpaḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To fix, settle, to assume a shape. To be settled or determined. To seem, appear, come to light, to look. To happen. To be declared, to be or become. To be selected, distinguished, separated, arranged, appointed. రూపగు, తేటపడు,బయలుపడు, నిర్ణయింపబడు. కర్తలై యేర్పడినారు they appeared as, or, turned out to be the heirs. ఏర్పరుచు or ఏర్పరించు ērparaṭsu. v. a. (casual of ఏర్పడు) To form, adjust. To choose, select. distinguish. To separate, divide, To set forth, define, declare. To arrange, to settle. ఏర్పడునట్లు చేయు. ఏర్పాటు ēr-pāṭu. n. An arrangement, settlement, rule. Fixing, disposal, decision, management. Selection, choice, agreement. నిర్ణయము, నియమము, వివరణము. ఏర్పాటుచేయు to select, arrange, to effect an arrangement. To project or scheme.

(p. 202) ai The vowel AI as the i in pride. The shape ఐ is used as an initial in the dictionary and in poetry, but elsewhere the Telugus use a secondary form అయి 'AYI' instead: The secondary form అయి ayi is used in poetry as a dissyllable, whenever the metre requires two short syllables for AI, which is one long. The Y in అయి is not pronounced. Thus అయిదు is not pronounced ayidu, but ai-du. In Telugu words there is this liberty of spelling; but the longer form ayi ought never to be used in words of Sanscrit origin.

(p. 212) oyyāramu or ఒయారము oyyāramu. [Tel.] n. Bloom, grace, shapeliness, the pride of beauty. సౌందర్యగర్వము. ఒయ్యారపు మాటలు pretty language, bragging. వయస్సు తప్పినా ఒయ్యారము తప్పదు old as he is he has still a sweet tooth in his head. ఒయ్యారకాడు oyyāra-kāḍu. n. A fop, a beau. ఒయ్యారి oyyāri. adj. Blooming, graceful, shapely, pretty. ఒయ్యారిపిక్కలు pretty legs. ఒయ్యారి or ఒయ్యారకత్తె oyyāri. n. A beauty, a graceful woman. A coquette.
