(p. 66) appuḍu appuḍu. [Tel. from ఆ+పొద్దు] adv. Then, at that time (This is also used as a defective noun.) Dative అప్పటికి at that time, అప్పట్లో (locative) at that time. అప్పటినుంచి since that time. అట్లా చెప్పేటప్పటికి when he said so. మరియొకప్పుడు at another time. In compounds it means 'When', as వాడు వచ్చినప్పుడు when he came. ఒకప్పుడు వచ్చెను ఒకప్పుడు రాకపోయెను he sometimes came and sometimes stayed away. అప్పుడే (emphatic form) just then, already. అప్పుడే పుట్టిటనబిడ్డ a child just born. అప్పుడప్పుడు now and then. అప్పటిరాజులు the rulers of those days, the then princes.

(p. 126) āḷvāru āḷvāru. [Drav.] n. A Vaishnava name for a saint. The Alwars or saints were twelve in number and are considerd to have been incarnations of the attendants, arms, or insignia of Vishnu: each of them wrote a portion of the 'Dravida Prabandham,' or 'Tamil Veda' help in greater veneration that the original Sanskrit Veda, of which it is, in fact, an ancient Tamil translation (Ellis.) The పరమయోగివిలాసము is a history of these personages. A hawk is sometimes called గరుడాళ్వారు.

(p. 178) ṛ The vowel Ri or Ru like ri in trick or ru in fruit; sometimes wrongly written రు. The vowels ఋ and ఋ in Prosody rhyme to ఇ and ఈ, never to ఉ, ఊ and ఓ.

(p. 180) enta enta. [Tel. ఏ+అంత] adj. How much. ఇది యెంత పొడుగు how long is this? ఎంత అన్యాయము what injustice! ఈ బంగారమెంత ఉన్నది what is the price (or weight) of this gold? అది యెంత పని what great matter is that? ఎంతమాత్రము how much? ఎంతలో within what price? ఎంతమాత్రము కాదు by no means. అట్లు అనడానకు నేనెంతవాణ్ని who am I that I should say so? నీవెంత ఆయనయెంత? what comparison is there between you and him? నేనెంత చెప్పినా notwithstanding all I could say. ఎంత చెల్లించితే అంత మంచిది the more you pay the better అప్పుడు ఎంత రాత్రియైయుండెను what time of night was it then? ఎంత సేపటికి వచ్చినాడు how long after did he come? ఎంతకు అమ్మినాడు for how much did he sell it? ఎంతమాత్రము కూడనిపని a thing quite out of the question. నీవెంత నేనెంత అని పోట్లాడినారు they scorned or insulted one another. ఎంతటి వారు what sort of persons? ఎంతమంది how many (persons.) The conjunction యు is sometimes added as an intensive. ఎంతయు రయంబున with very great speed ఎంతేని entēni. adv. Ever so much, how much soever. ఎంతైనను. ఎంతైన. how vast, how great, ever so great. ఎంతో much. ఎంతో సంతోషముతో with great joy.

(p. 185) eḍu eḍu. [Tel.] An affix denoting quantity (like full in a cup-ful, a bagful) పరిమాణార్థకము. మూరెడు a cubit, as much as a cubit. బారెడు an ell-long. బుడ్డెడు a bottleful. To this word the affix ఏసి is sometimes added: గంపేడేసి by basketfuls, a basketful at a time. cఎడు or ఎడి an affix applied to participles, does not alter the sense, as పోవు or పోయెడు going.

(p. 193) ē ē. An affix denoting emphasis: thus, నేనే I myself. వాడే that very man. మేమే we ourselves. This is sometimes doubled. Thus అతడేనే he himself.

(p. 234) kaḍapaceṭṭu kaḍapa-cheṭṭu. [Tel.] n. Barringtonia acuṭangula, sometimes called the Indian Oak Tree (Watts.) కదంబము.

(p. 242) kannayya kannayya. [Tel.] n. A father by blood (as distinguished from an adopted father). Another meaning is in use. When parents fear an infant may die, they sometimes bore a crevice through the wall and put the babe through it: then they name their son కన్నయ్య 'him of the cleft' as received directly from the deity.

(p. 267) kāki kāki. [Tel. lit that which says kā, kā.] n. A crow. అడవికాకి the jungle crow or Corvus macrorhynchus. మంచి కాకి or ఊరకాకి the Indian house crow, corvus splendens. (F.B.I.) This word sometimes denotes depreciation as కాకి బంగారు false gold, tinsel. కాకిదొండపండు the wild cherry. దేశకాకి, or దేశమ్మకాకి a wandering wretch or vagrant. సముద్రపుకాకి an osprey. నీరుకాకి a cormorant. ఇనుపముక్కు కాకి the giant vulture or king of the vultures. మూలకాకి a raven. బొంతకాకి a raven. కాకిచంపు విత్తులు kāki-champu-vittulu. Same as కాకమారి (q. v.) కాకిచావు kāki-ṭsāsu. n Apoplexy, sudden death. కాకిచిప్ప kaki chippa. n. A bivalve shell. కాకిచెమ్మలు or కాకితీపు or కాకిసోమాల or కాకిసొమ్మ kāki-chemmalu. n. Fainting, epilepsy. కాకబాతు kāki-bātu. n. A brown species of wild duck. కాకిరెక్కలు kāki-rekkalu. n. The grain called millet. కాకివెదురు kāki-veduru. n. A reed.

(p. 315) konta konta. [Tel.] adj. Some, a little, to a certain extent. కొంతకాలమునకు for sometime, for a short time. కొంతమట్టుకు, a little, somewhat, to a certain extent.

(p. 338) kvacittu or క్వచిత్ kvachittu. [Skt.] adv. Here and there, occasionally, sometimes, a little, some. క్వచిక్కము adj. Trifling. Petty, slight. క్వాచిత్కముగా kvā-chitkamu-gā. adv. Rarely, occasionally.

(p. 433) cē chē [Tel. contracted from చేయి or చెయ్యి.] n. The hand. చెయ్యి. An elephant's trunk తొండము. చేసరచు to pat the hand. చేసంజ్ఞ a sign made with the hand. చేకానుక a present given in person. చేగలమెకము an elephant. చేగలవాడు a charitable person. చేతప్పు a slip of the pen. చేబదులు or చేతియప్పు a simple debt as distinguished from a bond debt. చే like 'hand,' when used adjectively sometimes means Small, as చేపెట్టె a hand box, చేకత్తి a small knife, చేబాడిదె a small adze. చే or చేత affix. By, through, with. తనచేనైనంతదూరి abusing them to the utmost in his power. చేకూలి chēkūli. n. Hire. చేకూలికాడు a hireling, a hired servant. B. D. v. 396.

(p. 487) ṭ ṭa. The name of a letter. In composition this is sometimes changed into డ thus చేటుపాటు chēṭu-pāṭu. becomes ఛేడ్పాటు chēḍ-pāṭu. Colloquially it changes into ష. Thus అటువంటి, అఘవంటి as, in English, intention is pronounced intenshun. This letter ట is sometimes inserted to prevent elision. ఉప్పు+ఏరు (uppu-ēru) becomes ఉప్పుటేరు (uppu-ṭē-ru.) a salt river. పెంకు+ఇల్లు, పెండుటిల్లు. This may happen even where the first word is Sanskrit, thus: మదపుటేనుగు.

(p. 491) ḍ ḍa. The letter D, sounded as a palatal. D sometimes changes into ణ Na, thus: అడగు, అణగు; పడతి, పణతి. In a few words the hard and soft D are used as pleasure: as దాగు or డాగు. Vide Appa C. bk. ii. rule 168. In the colloquial dialect ండ may become ంణ, thus: దండము and అడంగులు are written దంణము or దణ్నము and ఆణంగులు.
